I think I've got it. I had to download something to get the game working in 1920x1080 so that may have been it. I'll check in a bit and see for sure. I also agree on the sound front, though I've never given it much thought, but now that I think about it some of the more immersive games I've played did have great sound, tracks, and sound effects.

I was actually surprised how creepy the zombies were in Thief, and I suppose you could chalk that one up to sound as well.

I'd say what gets me is how much games have left out. Like, you'd think they would have kept some foundational things that made the old games great but then you go back and play some of the old stuff and you begin to realize that new games are hardly even games any more. It's like they try to emulate the feeling of playing a game rather than being a game, and this goes beyond the "cinematic experience" games.

Granted digital versions of games are much more profitable but if you want to mass-produce AAA games console gamers are easier to sell to or more willing to be fucked over, take your pick.

On the other hand long tail sales are much more likely and profitable on PC. Steam sales, digital distribution (it costs nothing to 'stock' games digitally compared to the large cost of a physical store) and again the more picky consumers are the major factors.

In the long term you'll make equal amounts of profit, quite often more, from PC sales but purely in terms of launch week console sales are generally more numerous and more profitable.

Also I remember getting a PC and then never touching my PS1 with all the cool games on it, because PC had better games. Donated my console and whole 300-something-titles collection to some kid. Never bought a console since.

It's much too expensive for an average slav to own a console with retail-bought games. PC games are usually cheaper (and relatively easy to pirate if not cheap), and are thus more attractive. Finally, the slavs have a huge hard-on for modding, many important mods for large games came out from post-soviet countries.

Yeah I've done that already. The thing is that it seems to happen with no rhyme or reason. Happened in the main menu the first time I launched, started a New Game, wasn't happening. Launched again and it didn't happen in the menu, but did in-game. Backed out to main menu, got back in, worked just fine. Everything was fine all throughout the first mission and then it started again in the train station.

It's a tick-tock rhythm of retardation. Amusingly, this effect is flickering, so I also got a couple of shots of the game looking normal while spamming F12.
