YouTube loses money because they have to pay insane bandwidth bills. This is distributed, so the people running it don't have to pay the bills, everyone using it does. It's a bit like how BitTorrent doesn't have to pay for all the bandwidth for everyone to torrent everything. Now compare that to something like openload.co that has to host files on servers and send them directly to people on their dime.

Think of it like this. YouTube has their own computers connected to a network that stores and serves all videos hosted there. You watch a video on YouTube, YouTube looks for the file on their server and then sends it to you. They have to pay for storage, bandwidth, and the computers to send you the files to watch.

Distributed means the files are spread out among computers all over that aren't related to the people who run it. If I had DTube on my computer, and I posted a Moonman video, it would first be served from my computer via my bandwidth until it propagated and spread through the network of other users, so they could get my video from other users. I would also be giving other people's videos up from my connection, instead of Google's servers.

Now, if someone wants to delete a video, in YouTube, they go to YouTube and delete it from YouTube's servers. To remove from DTube, they'd have to go after every user who had a copy of that file and stop them from sharing it.

Ok so I found some information about what is going on behind the scenes and what the limitations are. Videos uploaded to dtube are being distributed via an existing IPFS node called "IPFS Store" which is a service that lets people store and share files through it in exchange for Bitcoin. This eliminates the need for dtube users to worry about configuring their own IPFS nodes or seeding their own files.

Because IPFS Store is a paid service, this means that a portion of the Cryptocurrency profits (dtube users are paid in "steem" which had a brief run last year as having the third largest market cap for Cryptocurrency) goes to paying IPFS Store for their service. They say 25% of it goes to them but they give an example that makes me think their math went way off somewhere.

However, it seems that uploaders only earn rewards for the first 7 days after upload, and that after about 57 months the uploader will either need to pay for further hosting or seed the video themselves.
