Why aren't you learning Nipponese user? Don't you want to play all those Nipponese only games that will never come out in English? Don't you want to play games without waiting months or years for a version that is censored, has new bugs, unreadable accents, removed the ability to play as a girl, only has a partial English dub, adds memes, replaces the dialog with nonsense like ellipsis or wagging tails, and cut features because the "localization" company couldn't be assed to do their job and translate them?
If you wanna get some practice, try reading/translating doujins. They're generally about the same topic and half the words are sex grunts. So it's a nice entry into reading other shit.
Also it's fun.

The side-effect is your vocab starts to include words like 子宮 and 掻き回す.

Manga in general. A lot of it tends to be fairly easy to read.
Also, download KanjiTomo and thank me later, homo.

Even better.

Anyone have a recommendation for an Anki deck for some advanced vocabulary?
I make my own vocabulary deck, but I like having a pre-made deck in addition to it so that even when I'm too lazy to add new cards I can hopefully still learn something each day. Just finished the deck I'd been doing though.
Plus for includes Japanese definitions & example sentence.

Are there any other places where you can get manga besides the reading list?
Also, do you guys have any recommendations?
Gabriel Jenkins
Everyone suggests Yotsuba&! if you're starting out. Azumanga Daiou is pretty good, too. But it doesn't use furigana.
I really liked Shirokuma Cafe, myself. The Japanese is quite simple and Shirokuma likes to do "puns" which are fun little vocab trips.
Jeremiah Clark
I got it from a bundle and tried it like a year ago. It doesn't seem bad, but I'd rather learn while playing a real game instead of a walking simulator.

If you're using Windows, installing the Japanese language via control panel automatically gives you the windows IME.
Download Google IME, then press Alt + ~ to switch between English and Japanese typing modes.

I stopped actively learning after learning all the kana, and since then I've just been passively absorbing shit by being a weeb. I know a few kanji and a decent-ish amount of vocab but I have no idea how to string sentences together because I know almost nothing about grammar.
I wish I wasn't such a lazy cunt since I'm currently a NEET and don't really have anything better to do, but I can't bother studying. Is there something similar to namasensei's lessons, where it's actually presented as lessons and not just big infodumps? Maybe if I make a schedule I can keep to it but I need that info to be doled out in lessons in order to do that.
Brandon Bennett
learning a language takes a long time. I don't have the motivation. I am a lazy fuck. Japanese is said to be especially tedious to learn as far as languages are concerned. I'll never leave my basement, so there's no way I'll ever go to Japan. Anime isn't real. There are dozens of excuses why. That's why.
Elijah Baker

Try Imabi or Tae Kim to get the gist of the grammar and just read and listen to a lot Japanese books and audio to absorb new grammar concepts and vocabulary. There should be a link for the readings in the OP.
Personally I don't use Anki, Genki, Heisig, or whatever. Just a grammar reference and TONS of reading and listening materials. Grammar is easy, but it's probably because I already know Korean.

I used my English characters and played just fine. I went to character edit for the Nipponese names for fun, but you keep the English names otherwise.

Ah, I have a bit of a question about Anki. I use the android version so I'm not sure whether this applies to the PC program. I have a deck for RTK and each day 20 new cards would be added, that was the default and it's a fine pace for me so I left it there. In the past couple days it has not added any new cards automatically, the cards have all been reviews. I have to manually add the 20 if I want to review the next 20 kanji. Is this just how Anki works? Should I stick to what it wants me to review without manually adding any, or should I just add a new 20 every day?
Matthew Allen
That's good to know.
Nolan Ramirez
That's not how it should work. Maybe your reviews are limited so it's not adding any new cards past that? Your review limit should be something high like 9999 so that it doesn't limit your reviews per day.
Andrew Smith
Thank you, I've changed that option

Where the did "you can't learn Japanese" girl even originate from?
I didn't realise the July JLPT results were available online already.
I passed! Only N5 but it's one step forward. I did pretty shit though 81/180. Vocab A Grammar B Reading B
I'm lucky the percentage required to pass is so low for N5. My best excuse is I've only been learning since December and half arsed most of it until a month before the exam, and on top of that did 0 listening practice.
Must work harder.
At least I know I can do it now; time to get my brain back on the grindstone. Recommend me some celebration music; I couldn't have done it without you guys (or at least without the guide in the OP).
Angel Young
Where'd you do the test, user? I've got a drill book for N5/N4 that I haven't touched because I haven't done half the N4 grammar.
Sebastian Kelly
Edinburgh. I was pretty worried going in because it was my first time, but it was very well organised.

Read the entirety of Tae Kim or a good substantial amount of Imabi. This will take about 2 weeks to a month depending how much hours you put in per day.
Start reading simple Japanese works, Yotsubato! is a good start because it provides pictures for context, everyday vocabulary and simple grammatical structures. Listen to easy Japanese audio. Japanese Podcast 101 has some good stuff but can get boring. Elementary-level audiobooks with transcripts is also excellent. Keep doing these with progressively more difficult materials. Continue studying Tae Kim or Imabi if you have trouble with new grammatical concepts.
Anki is mindnumbingly boring and mostly pointless for language learning since at the end, it takes up your valuable reading time and would eventually end up killing your motivation, your most important asset.
Kayden Carter
I think I'm giving up Holla Forums.
I initially wanted to work and live in Japan, but I did some research and I guess I wouldn't survive their working conditions plus a few other things that bothered me about Japan.
Oh well, there goes all my motivation to keep learning Japanese.
I mean I still like Japan and would love to play Japanese games or read manga, but learning Japanese is soo time consuming.
I stopped playing video games, watching anime, going to the gym and drinking alcohol, just to get more time for learning and still barely made progress.
I was learning for 6 months and can't read shit, I think I need a break at least but I'm afraid I'll forget everything.
Brandon Perry
Depends what job you're doing I guess? I'm pulling a normal 40 hours more or less.
Learning a language is a fuckhuge process user, it's not something you're magically going to pull off in a year or two. The trick is to make it stay engaging and interesting. Throw yourself at one or two games or animu now, and then every few months go back to one of them and see how you slowly progress at understanding. The other, don't go back until a few years later. With the first, you'll see slow incremental progress, and with the second you'll realize just how huge a jump you've made as a whole.
Christopher Rodriguez
What's the best way of translating kanji you don't know from a video game?
I wanna try Recettear but I'm scared.
Liam Wilson
jisho.org/ has a function where you put in the radicals and it gives you a range of selections, which you can narrow down by picking more radicals.
It's not fast, but it gets you where you need to go.

Sorry to be a bother, but the mega link to よつば needs an encryption key, have I missed that or should I just find it somewhere else?
Coming on suggestion from the MH thread: Any anons who know moonrunes willing to weigh in on my feeble MHX dlc localization effort? I've "translated" the main data for all of the main high rank, but I'm unsure of what to do for at least a third of them.
The only difficult part is the quest names, the rest is straightforward. In-sheet commenting should be "on" for the public link. Any suggestions or improvements are appreciated.
As I said in the MonHun thread, I'll post for it community after the project is finished.
Austin Peterson
So how long did it take you fags to be able to read without having to refer to a translator every other word? If this shit takes more than three months, I'm not going to bother. I ship for basic training in three months. Maybe sooner. I expect it to take a few months but want to know if other Anons have had faster results.
Alexander Clark
Depends on the text.
Learn anyways. If you know even the most basic your chances of getting posted in Nippon and not a combat zone increase a lot.
Anthony Taylor
Don't bother learning Japanese in this case. If you only think about the destination rather than the journey, you won't last 3 months, let alone 2 weeks.
Elijah Carter
Other way around, the let alone would be the longer period of time
Dylan Nelson
It's just a cute kid's anime with a little kissing.

About how much kanji would I need to know to be somewhat comfortable reading things in general? Like how much shit would I actually understand after 2k and 6k?
Nathaniel Phillips
You can learn all the kanji and not learn a single word.
2k and 6k are vocab decks, the vast majority of Japanese words are compounds of kanji and hiragana.
You could learn 6k words and not understand a single sentence. Words without structure have no meaning, you need to learn grammar.
You can't half ass Japanese and expect to learn anything, the Roman alphabet is not a language, nor is a list of words using it. The guide in the OP has all the information you need if you decide learning Japanese is worth your time.
John Parker
I read the doc but I had trouble understanding that. So it's kanji and hiragana that makes up words, not just the kanji by themselves. Does that mean the little Chinese I know won't be that useful?
Luke Hall
What about it don't you understand?
Probably not; in Chinese each character is a word and as for as I'm aware usually has only one reading. Japanese just borrowed the characters to write their own words with, occasionally the words they're used in are related to the Chinese meaning but they'll also be used wherever they sound right for the word or whenever the drunk monks who invented the retarded Japanese writing system found it most convenient. Japanese Kanji also have multiple readings; for example the character 言 can be read as ゲン, ゴン, い(う) or こと depending on the word it's used in.
Wyatt Lopez
...
Luke Cruz
Are there girls kissing girls?
Wyatt Morales
Many single kanji can by themselves be used a word, but not all of them.
For example 水 alone forms a word, 捧 does not and is only used in conjunction with hiragana (捧げる), other kanji (捧呈), and/or both (捧げ物) to form words. 水 too can be combined with other things to form separate words.
I think the primary benefit benefit gained by knowing Chinese would be being able to recognize and distinguish between kanji you're already familiar with & in addition a lot of them share similar meaning between the two languages.
I don't really know anything about Chinese, but the grammar is probably a fair bit closer to Japanese than English is as well, so I imagine you'd have less to wrap your head around as far as that goes too. I don't know how far knowing a little will get you though.
