Probably not anymore. My dad was pretty tech savvy back when I was a kid and stressed the importance of not giving out personal information. Even general websites would make note about just using a handle or username, and that what they did require wouldn't be shared beyond what you cleared it to. Now there's been a striking difference where so many sites want so much information about you just to use them, and it wouldn't shock me if a lot of younger people have never experienced otherwise.

I'm guessing here, but if you post a character that an avatarfag uses, you're less likely to be affected because a mod is likely to check post history while issuing a ban. Your post history will show up as a ton of unrelated posts/images with one uncropped character image while the avatarfag will have nothing but.
