Doom is the best game

The pinkie was actually a dinosaur, huh. A clever way of making sprites.

Doom 64 needed more love, nice to see it's getting some attention even if the source has it's controversies.
That said I'm liking what Mark is doing with BD64 compared to brutal doom. Enemy health and damage of weapons are tweaked only slightly. The gun's have much better visual and auditory feedback. No fatalities and the sprites are true to the game, and the lighting effects brighten things up without betraying the creepy feel of the game. Bringing in the missing enemies sans archviles (unfortunate because archviles are great when used well but it doesn't work quite as well with doom64's map structure). No reloading or headshots to be found either. Looks excellent, but I wonder if there's any doom64 texture replaces so I can play it on vanilla mapsets.

I acutally did like the 2016 Doom. The SP was pretty gud. Haven't touched the multiplayer, don't plan to.

The main problem I had was the upgrade system and how glory kills ruined the pacing of the health system. I don't want to stop every few seconds of gameplay and watch the same animation again and again. It even sorta ruins the regular health pickups since glory kills seem to be far easier.

Duke3d was better than any of Id's games.

I'm trying to run Doom4Doom in GZDoom and it doesn't work. I obviously have the .pk3, and I have the latest version of GZDoom, and I'm running it in Doom2, but I get this. So any idea what's going on and how I can fix if?

I've been meaning to upload these for a while and kept putting it off. Some years ago on the late, great Underground Gamer I downloaded bugfixed versions of the TNT and Plutonia WADs that were only ever included in the Depths of Doom Trilogy compilation, and apparently some early version of the id Anthology compilation (but not later versions). Here's a thread on doomworld discussing the changes:

Most notably the yellow key bug in TNT map31 is fixed, there's also some deathmatch starts added to a couple of Plutonia maps, and it seems there's also a fix for plutonia to prevent demo crashing. There may be other changes I'm unaware of.

The easiest way to tell which version of the WADs you have is to check the modified dates, the fixed versions were last modified in November 1996, unpatched versions probably will show last modified in June 96 (although for some reason I have an unfixed TNT wad that shows it was modified in January 97, weird).

I recently had my primary backup drive shit the bed and I feared these WADs might be lost, fortunately I was able to salvage my entire Doom folder, so I'm uploading these treasures to the vola now so hopefully they can be preserved against future calamity. For the hell of it I'm also including 2 other WADs, doom2expc and doom2tlm, the former is just a Doom2 WAD merged with the No Rest for the Living expansion, and it should all be uncensored without any of the edits/censorship from the BFG edition. doom2tlm is levels exclusive to Playstation Doom (or was it Final Doom, I forget) that you can load at your discretion.

I lied, both when I said I'd stop shitting up the thread and when I said doom2expc.wad is just doom2+NRFTL, obviously it also includes Master Levels. Duuhr.

I also have a wad for (G)ZDoom that is Master Levels merged with the ZDoom Master Levels Menu Interface mod (forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=20795), I merged the levels with the mod myself via the more time consuming invasive method that requires editing the MAPxx lump for each WAD one by one (but is more convenient as it requires no separate files in the ZDoom directory once done), I can upload it if anyone really wants it but honestly the doom2expc should have you covered for Master Levels.

So I was making a map (pic related) and wondering if I should restrict player jumping to stop them from grabbing and obvious secret. On the other hand, if they were to play it with any gameplay mod they would probably be pretty pissed.

I'm so happy it does, I can actually have a tangible demonstration of how doom 4 fucked up and how with simple balance tweaks it could have been much better. The people I talked to just don't understand why, but with this I can show them.

I think that was the issue with doom 4. They had a surface level idea of what Doom was about (sans it being a bit slower and a lack of monster hordes) but failed when it came to the intricacies that made the original work.

You can like whatever you want, I reccomend Project bruality if you like BD. It expands upon and improves it in some ways also it has a traditional mode which basically has the same guns from the original(only they've been somewat rebalanced to fit the mod and have different sounds, designs, and animations), no glory kills, but the same monster abilities and difficutly modes for brutal doom

I'd say take some time to study some other maps. Don't focus on making separate rooms connected with hallways, but rather cohesive interconnected areas. Think about how you want the map to flow and how the gameplay will play out. And test the hell out of it.

Yeah, should. I just always get caught in details before getting the overall layout figured out. Then I have these random setpieces that can look pretty cool but don't make much sense with gameplay.

I know it's good to mix the enemy types, but I haven't seen that much of proper analysis of what makes certain fights in Doom more fun than others.

GZDoom Builder can make vanilla-compatible maps just fine. DEU still exists on the idgames archive if you really want to use it.

Do you huge guts have opinions on Doom Roguelike? I've gotten somewhat far (somewhere in Phobos) but the game simply doesn't give you any health. Or if it does, monsters pick the medpacks up and use them.

There's also some technical issues. While I like the sounds, they don't really work for rapid fire weapons.
A small detail, but something that got on my nerve almost instantly.

You can add other textures as a resource in GZDoom Builder. Unsure as to whether GZDB compiles them into your WAD when you save it, I've only ever used the vanilla textures.

I played 2 days ago and got to Deimos. Once. After about 6 tries. I play on HMP. It's pretty fun, but I feel that you can't really skip on the bonus levels if you want to stay competitive which kind of defeats the point of them being optional. I'm becoming quite good though, I can do Hell's Arena every time which means an early rocket launcher. I need to figure out how to beat the shamblers in the Armory though. Those fucks are tough and regenerate.

I finished Doom and Doom II awhile back. I'm wanting to try out Heretic now. I really liked what chocolate doom had to offer with a vanilla experience. Its there something similar to chocolate doom for Heretic or a list of settings I should be using for ZDoom?

As much as how polarizing Brutal Doom is here (Project Brutality and Johnny Doom are superior to Brutal Doom, though), SgtMarkIV's other works are at least intriguing. Unless they are taken from other mods, which is probably the case. All I know is that his attempts to remake Knee Deep in the Dead seems like it is taking pages from Knee Deep in ZDoom while experimenting with new lighting techniques.

think he's of the mind that mod community work is collaborative, answers in the comments of that video his mod can be used in another guy's project. some people are anal about sharing their mod work.

The Brutal Doom hate comes down to three things. Vanillafags who hate the idea of a mod replacing Vanilla due to popularity. SJWs who hate SgtMarkIV (and a number of them use the first and second reasons to hate BD as cover.) Lastly faggots crying about petty shit supposedly not being credited when actually its just rival jealousy at play.

It took him years to bother with actually crediting people. When BD first started he claimed he did everything himself and took all credit, despite the fact that he only did about 20% of the work. You can go download early versions of BD and you will find no credits other than SgtMark.

Some thing somebody made and posted on the halfchan /vr/ doom thread. It replaces the starting pistols with some dual-wielded ones and also replaces the super shotgun later on. The pistols can be upgraded with green skulls that drop from monsters. When you have at least fifty of them, you press the 'use inventory' key and then primary fire, secondary fire, or reload to get an upgrade.

You need a really recent devbuild to run it though.

Does Hexen improve eventually? Not touched it before but so far its a complete bore. When I read it had hub levels I thought it sounded like a nice change from the usual formula with Doom and Heretic. Instead the second level is an ugly hall of portals, I'm still stuck with just the mace and combat consists of holding down the attack button while circle strafing in larger areas or slowly backing up in corridors, the latter scenario is omnipresent in the crappy micro-levels the portals lead to. To make matters worse even the Ettins take 5 hits to kill.

it definitely has more of an RPG grind thing going on in the early game, try playing mage for a more traditional shootan experience.

otherwise yeah, it takes a fair bit of time for the game to give up the cool toys and it will be a slog until then.

The stupid puzzles and backtracking never stop. You will eventually get new weapons that are pretty fun to use, but you'll pay for every minute of fun with several minutes of flipping a switch and then running around the parts of the level you've already seen, trying to figure out which door that switch opened.

How do I know how much green skulls I have? how do I use inventory? I'm only running on GZDoom.

The actual hud is one size above the default view size. Use minus and plus keys to fiddle around the view size. To use upgrades, press the enter key or whatever the use item key is while holding the pistols. You need at least 50 green skulls for an upgrade.

Making Doom4 more interesting has some real potential. Probably some degenerate stuff in it but a good engine… that isn't on offer free as it should be. Money fucking money. Traitors.


Movement wasn't great in Doom 3 and aiming had stutter. Too much work for people to make things.

A open engine should have auto texturing options for scanned or created objects. Use a disgusting camera.phone to create 3D objects. User selects their weight & material. Texture applied from photos. Including bump/tesselation and specular.

Otherwise lighting and a detail/material texture until a texture is added later. Arrange areas so progression is difficult in all directions but one that should be fairly obvious. Rest can be used when low on ammo or health to avoid death. Or when not confident of jumps. Maybe pursued, but knowing with long warning.when enemies approach so comfortable exploration until then. Enemies added to chew up ammo hoarde so main progress is easy. No saving/loading, resuming from same position, so fire and forget continue on.

Quake II would be better. Software mode only. Already great everything. Suppose better lackluster efforts aka parody don't touch it.

How do I into level design

By playing video games with good level design I would guess

Study Brutalist architecture, ancient structures (not pyramids, more like fortresses or castles) and a bit of Chinese and Japanese architecture as well for getting a general idea on the basic design and abstract flow of Doom. Play wads like Scythe to learn how2item placement and Requiem/HR for how2monster placement.

Actually finish your damn maps or at least publish them somewhere to get feedback, this is the most important thing.

If you have a modern videocard that supports OGL 3.0 and beyond, go with GZDoom. Otherwise ZDoom is just fine for most, if not all mods out there.

What are the differences between Brutal Doom, Project Brutality and Johnny Doom?

Project Brutality balances out the weapons, monsters, and mechanics in Brutal Doom while adding in even more weapons, monsters, and mechanics.

Johnny Doom takes Brutal Doom and makes the gameplay feel more arcade-y.

Get as butthurt as you like, but the doom threads on halfchan /vr/ are better than the doom threads here on a regular basis. Considerably less shitposting, and people are always posting maps or mods they're making. The last few threads there were full of posts of people messing around with the RetroShader, which gives GZDoom some OG Doom flair while keeping features like dynlights.

The levels are linear corridoring, but to an average casual who isn't testing what they can do, the environment seems like a real one you could find.

I mean if you test things in a game like Tomb Raider (reboot), you can see how broken many of the "Rush" sequences are, but it seems real enough if you don't think about it.

I have never really played DOOM before until today (at least not for more than 5 minutes)

I've completed the game vanilla and had some fun but really didn't like the lack of feedback on weapons or verticality. I tried some mods like Demonsteele and enjoyed them a bit more but the one I liked most was Brutal Doom. From what I understand, BD is shit so what should I play instead if the main thing I'm looking for is weapon feedback?

Also I liked Quake 1 a bit more but there doesn't seem to be nearly as many big overhaul mods to it.

If you like BD, continue playing BD. Don't let an imageboard decide your own opinion. If you want to play something that's more "approved" try Project Brutality. People dislike BD because its poor balance makes the game much easier if you know what you're doing, and it's largely style over substance. It doesn't help the the author is an egotistical jerk that gets cries when Id "steals" his mod concept, yet was perfectly fine using resources from other modders without crediting them.

Led's Generic Doom Mod is probably the best for adding tons of feedback without dramatically changing the weapon sandbox or making things too overpowered. And make sure you play stuff like Plutonia too, that iwad kicks ass.

Combined Arms also has bretty good weapon feedback.

Give complex doom a go, without any of the addons (Plain vanilla complex doom, a single .pk3 not the convoluted shit people usually play). At least one person will call me a faggot, but I really like what daedalus did.

99% of mods are for (G)ZDoom or Skulltag, and there's like one guy who makes mods for 3DGE. Doomsday has no real modding scene to speak of, just basic stuff like UI enhancements that are hosted on the port's official homepage.

Can someone explain how to work this vulkan thing? I'm running an AMD card but when I swap the setting over to it my FPS takes a shit dive into crap town. I thought this was supposed to increase my FPS, not ruin it.

ZDoom & co. don't support AMD cards very well. They blame their drivers, but I think it's just laziness + ineptitude.

When the vast majority of projects out there complain about the exact same thing I'd tend to say it's true.

If they can make Alien Isolation run maxed at 60 fps on my comp, but a single dynamic light causes Doom to dip below 20 I'd say there's something quite wrong with GZD.

Honestly, I would have preferred it if it was centuries after Doom64, where the demons, unable to actually kill Doomguy, only managed to seal him up. Then some scientists manage to dig him up and wonder why the fuck some guy in ancient human military tech was sealed off in hell. Then Doomguy wakes up, gets pissed that they've unleashed hell again despite what happened last time the UAC was tampering with that shit, then goes on a murder spree to clean up the demons and permanently seal off hell once and for all.

I get that's kinda what they were going for in the new one, but they pussied out or something and just made doomguy some ancient special warrior guy with a special suit.

One of my personal favorites, Chex Quest: The Lost Quest uses Chex1 as an iwad (?!) and hacks in the extra enemies (?!?!?!?!), which makes it difficult to use other mods with.

That is literally the plot of Doom 4 except it's after Doom 4. I don't know how you got something else. They sealed Doomguy up after he killed the Icon of Sin because they couldn't handle him. He's then dug up by the UAC centuries later, you're well into the future at this point.
