PRE-CHRISTIAN TRIBALS OF NORTHERN EUROPE WERE NOT FEMINISTS!
THEY WERE SLIGHTLY LESS RESTRICTIVE THAN THEIR GRECO-ROMAN COUNTERPARTS, BUT STILL HIGHLY PATRIARCHAL
1. Early Germanic people recognized 3 ways of contracting marriages: by capture (Raubehe), by purchase of the female (Kaufehe), and by mutual consent (Friedelehe)…….. the most encouraged of which was Kaufehe
2. Marriage involved passing the power over a woman (mundium) from her father to her husband and the bride's ties with her family of origin were often severed completely.
3. A wife could return to her parents if she was treated cruelly. Cruel treatment included "excessive or unjust beatings" and excluded beatings for correction.
4. Alemannic, Bavarian, Visigoth, Ripuarian, Thuringian, Saxon and Frankish laws among others all prohibited women from inheriting property except in the unlikely event of having no male relatives
5. Only adulterous women were punished. They could even be put to death for it.
6. Tacitus said that while women's opinions are respected, the final decision rests with the men of the tribe. Thus women are subordinated.
7. Tacitus mentions that if a fight were to occur between tribes, the winning tribesmen would make the losing tribe's women their captives.
8. Tacitus mentions that the tribe to the north of the Germans, the Sitones, "resemble [the Suevi Scandinavians] in all respects but one - woman is the ruling sex.". This again shows that the majority were patriarchal.
9. An old Danish proverb goes "Govern a horse with a bit, and a shrew with a stick" though this may have originated later.
10. In the Grettis saga Grettir rapes a woman for just mocking his manhood ((something which women do all the time today))
11. Odin raped Rindr to give birth to Vali
12. King Vladimir the Great raped Rogneda in the presence of her parents and forced her to marry him.
13. In the Siegfried Saga, Brunhilde burned herself to death in Siegfried's funeral pyre, a custom which was prevalent in India till the 19th century.
14. Aristotle mentioned that just like other people, the Celts preferred boys over girls.
15. Greek historian Diodorus Siculus writes that the Celts hardly ever spoke to their women, promoted brotherhood among their men and used women as fuckslaves (Book V)
16. Pre-Christian Lithuanian folk dress is preserved to this day and it includes a headcovering for women
17. There is also some evidence of pre-Christan headcovering in Nordic tribes as well.
18. Wife selling was also part of their lives.
