We've had this discussion on MH being on handhelds a million times.
Aside from the original PS2 games, this is how the developers designed MH to be like (i can't stress this enough, this is the main audience and how they actually intend this series to be played):
-You're the average japanese man.
-You get on a train every day and play via wi fi with other people on the train.
-You go to work or school and during breaks you play with other people there.
-In your free time you go to your local hunting groups either with your friends, or in specialized meeting places where people play MH together.
This is the INTENDED MH experience envisioned by the team, for the japanese.
This is why it took so much time to get multiplayer integrated via the hardware itself and before that you had to perform weird ritualistic blood sex acts on adhoc Party to get shit going, because they didn't need that shit.
The main reason why they've started pushing for online isn't westerners, but the simple fact that even in japan handhelds are getting replaced by smartphones, so it's not as common to find someone with a proper handheld anywhere you go in japan as it used to be (it's still way more common than in the west, just not -as- common).
Do i love playing MH on a home console with a proper controller?
Yes, MH3U was great on WiiU, even if it was a shit port, actually holding a goddamn controller and looking at a big screen made all the difference.
Do i think they're gonna put any effort whatsoever in the next home console iteration?
No.
Even if the NX is a home/portable system in one, i have absolutely zero doubts they'll fuck it up somehow and it'll only function propely while in portable mode or something (or maybe there will be a sequel to the 3DS specialized in portable only and that will be the actual good version and the only one they'll put any effort in).
Because simply put, they don't give a shit about the needs of westerners.
The MH team cares about the japanese market and their needs first, and then westerners are at the third, fourth place at best in their list of priorities, from design, to support.
It's just how it is.
And after all you can't even blame them, because MH sure as fuck didn't get big because of westerners back in the day, and especially in the PS2 era it wasn't westerners that launched this series towards the popularity that it enjoys today.
And additionally, it's biggest popularity boost in the west was with Tri, absolutely shitting up the community into a bunch of retarded shit flinging apes at the time, we almost risked becoming the Souls community 2.0.
It should really come as no surprise that they want to keep the online communities separated with japs playing among themselves.
In many ways the western MH community is seen as a smelly cash cow to be handled with gloves and a stick.
