I went to AWA 2013, which was ZUN's first western con, and first visit to America, at that. Naturally, a huge amount of the Touhou fandom, or at least the segment of it that visits cons, showed up. Dealing with them was not a good experience. Prior to this, I had known a few people into Touhou, and they were all autistically "off" in some way, sometimes to an obnoxious extent, but none as bad as this.

These are some of the most infant-like, self-centered, socially volatile, and outright pretentious little fucks I have ever met in my life. These people are Brony caliber. The kind of people who actually take waifu shit really fucking seriously. The kind of people who dress up as their favorite 2hu not because they think it's funny to be a grown man cosplaying a little Japanese girl (it is, to an extent), but the kind who have that character as a headmate, or who actually think that they literally are that character, or think that it's the best way to express their sexuality. The kind of people who will start a yelling shitfit, in real life, for having a different opinion than you. Keep in mind that this sort of person was still in the minority, but it was not a small minority. 40% is still a minority. There were really cool people among them, that I wish I had gotten to speak to more. What they were doing there, I don't fucking know. Probably the same as me.

Naturally, this is the kind of person who has found their way into community "power." I shit you not, I sat through 30 minutes of the people on stage talking exclusively about themselves and how important they are to the community before my group realized that it wasn't going to change and walked the fuck out of there. Our bad for not doing it sooner. I still somehow get the impression that the people on that stage got more pussy than me that weekend, probably due to the odd prevalence of equally unkempt, pasty-ass tumblr-haired girls there, but I digress.

However, the prevalence of fetish porn relating to a series doesn't have much to do with how fucked the fandom itself is, but rather, how much it directly affects the fandom and/or coexists within the same places as its primary fandom, does. There was a time when it was not especially difficult to find hilarious Sonic porn by visiting relatively normal sites. 2hu is still an outlier in that regard, however, since the game itself is very niche.

But to get back on to the topic of Fandoms it is just inevitable that certain game genres and indeed certain games (series) will attract a certain type of people.
The assumption, however, that the more niche and less popular a game is means the less weirdos are going to be a part of that fandom is wrong.
Consider that you are super far less likely to see Chad McFratboy playing something like Dwarf Fortress.
So its more of a ratio thing than anything else.

Now, on the other side of that coin, with a popular game you're going to get more of those weirdos that are loud and expressive in their weirdo ways. But the ratios should still point towards more normal people than fetish-fueled crazy people. Of course, as the numbers are high then the amount of crazy weirdos expressing there fan-love is also going to be higher.

Now, there are other factors too. With Sonic most people who ever liked Sonic stopped playing the games a long long time ago. The hardcore fanbase that holds on are basically the clingy autists who just couldn't let it go. Being a long running series, it is going to have accumulated TONS of them over the years.

I would say a very good general case study of this is the My Little Pony fandom and the rise of "Bronys"
