I'm not a physicist but I like to keep up with scientific progress. Doesn't it seem that in the last century, practical progress has been made, but we have hit a peculiarly hard limit on our knowledge? The idea that space itself is a malleable substance is, I believe, a direct corollary to the social marxist idea that there is no objective and firm reality and that everything can be bent and moulded into something else.

You are essentially right, but you are wrong in trying to find a physical connection between consciousness and its effects on the physical. Consciousness is metaphysical and manifests through complex systems (most notably the brain, but any level complexity allows for a level of expression of all-pervading consciousness).
There will never be found a physical connection between consciousness and its effects (no quantum tunneling, entanglement nor any kind of force or radiation) because the connection between the intent of consciousness and its "magical" effects on reality always happen on the metaphysical (holographic perhaps) level. Actually I am impartial to the earth being a sphere or flat. I just absolutely hate it when shills suggest that the earth being flat is supported by the Bible. If I had to prove the earth is moving I would start with saying the earth changes positions based off the season or part of the day we are in. When it is dark in north america it is bright in china for example. I would also point out that the sun is always in the same position in the sky as it rises and sets. Therefore either it is always moving around the earth in the same way or the earth is always moving around it the same way. But to supplement that the moon is not always in the same position in the sky. So it would make much more sense for the earth to move around the sun in some fashion.

The problem is in our current assumption of reality. We see the material reality which is described by natural sciences as some kind of entity that actually exists, whereas things that can't be falsified aren't subject to science. The reason of course is to get reproducible results, otherwise the entire concept of science would be pointless. However the logic conclusions of this axiom result in the aforementioned dilemma of uniting consciousness/qualia with science. Not only is there absolutely no scientific evidence for consciousness/qualia, it shouldn't even exist as there is no possible way how neural signal processing based on biochemical reactions results in these phenomena. Yet everyone of us experiences it every moment in his life, resulting in a behemoth of a paradox.

The problem is - as I said - our assumption of a material world outside our consciousness. There is no proof such a world exists. For our entire lives we are bound to access the world indirectly through our senses, incapable of ever knowing whether this is actually reality or just a computer simulation (solipsism). Any claims about what's outside of our consciousness are not falsifiable. Assuming a material reality that actually exists outside our mind is as founded as assuming unicorns on mars or that there more than 2 genders.

Hence the problem of approaching consciousness/qualia is that science is assumed to describe a system outside of our consciousness, but due to solipsism and our inescapable subjectivity the existence of this system is not falsifiable. That isn't really a big problem - until you try to apply this system to qualia. There is a fundamental logic flaw in the idea of using an infalsiable system designed explicitly outside of our subjective consciousness in an attempt to describe the very phenomenon it isn't part.

This is why I find the Von Neumann-DeWigner interpretation so interesting. Understand the quantum wave function and how any additional physical process can be integrated by adding the appropriate set of hilbert rooms is crucial to understanding why the only place for the "collapse of the wavefunction" is consciousness.
