I have the money and I really want one, but everyone is telling me they get boring after a few hours.

Console me by posting other $800 vidya-related items I could get instead.

You could give me that money instead.

1600 pop tarts.

Buy a DK2, I picked one up for £250. Try some stuff like

Elite: Dangerous. Dirt Rally, Project Cars.

See if you could possibly justify the full priced units. There's not a gigantic difference between the dk2 and cv1 tbh.

And also OP. I wouldn't waste my money on the newest sets, wait a few more years and see where it goes

144hz monitor

why

This thing.
21,500 dollarindos for a glorified chair.

vr porn says buy it

A better setup. Why not look for some quality displays?

I'd not buy anything VR yet, even with porn. I'd wait until there's better tech like OSVR.

Where does the keyboard and mouse go?

Because the room-scale tracking, extremely accurate controllers, and the support via steam.

I thought the rift was becoming closed with exclusives and whatnot.
Without the controllers you also miss out on a bunch of the games coming out.

I already have 3 144hz monitors

If you had a setup like that why the fuck would you play The Division on it

OP said he has money to waste. Why not waste it on a thing he can masturbate to?
that said, I really don't know the status of vr porn

...

People who spend that much money on hardware tend to be gigantic normalfags.
Anybody with a setup like that has absolutely shit taste.

None of those reasons have anything to do with actually using it in any way.

Also
Depends on the game and only up to like 2mx2m. There's a reason why you can't move in VR games.
You mean extremely clunky and shitty controllers right?

I'm assuming that it's not used here, but please don't use the picture for reference. That was from some Ubisoft shilling from Unbox Therapy.

You sound like you're not exactly tight on money. You might as well get it, it's a completely new experience either way.

For most people it's not worth it's price because they'd be trading a lot of other shit for it.

It can't be a good setup if you can't reach the keyboard and mouse at all times.

Well, here's how I base a lot of my entertainment related purchases:
The average movie ticket price is around 8 bucks.
The average movie lasts 2 hours.
So entertainment is 4 bucks/hour.
Divide whatever you're buying by 4.
So, 800/4 = 200.
So, if the headset can't give me around 200 hours of entertainment, it isn't a worthwhile purchase.

Have you considered a Novint Controller?

user, i just want to tell you - go with cheapest shit you can afford except cardboards. Because they aren't that different from one another and if they will make you have motion sickness because you casual faggot, then all of them will do that. And if they get boring, all of them will get boring.

Do not buy the most expensive shit. And if you'll really get bored, then at least you payed the cheapest price for it.

Remember that those things aren't for "having fun", but to have long term immersion into game world of first person vidya. Just to be sure, find your favorite first person game, that you would like to sit down and play with VR device, and see if that particular game has a device support you need or third party patches. Don't buy it if you want to just "try it out" on some theme park bullshit they ship with them.

wtf is wrong with you

Yeah, I do the same thing, except my limit is $2 an hour because I'm a frugal fuck. Still worth it for a surprising amount of indie vidya out there though.

Get an xbox one and a ps4 then spend time with friends and family in a proper setting. They miss you.

If i were you, i would take a good racing wheel complete with pedals(along with friction), shifter and stand and start having fun with it. If they ever manage to ultimate the development of vr headsets, take one of them to play racing games for max realism. That's the only good use of the virtual reality

...

Because most VR games aren't built around it, either because they want more sales from being on the oculus, or because they're idiots that think disorienting teleportation is a great and immersive way to move around a physical space

OP, if you just want to burn 800 better get a OSVR HDK2 for 400 and some nice HOTAS system or a racing wheel. Not because the HDK2 is cheaper but because it's better, full RGB displays instead of the pentile shit in the Vive. Well, unless you're into roomscale wagglan, though even that should become possible with the better and cheaper option sooner or later. Lay the saved 400 aside for that if you really must have the wagglan, don't let yourself get jewed out of your money for overpriced low quality shit even if you don't need to be super frugal.

No its because you start feeling pukey when it happens and teleporting is the only way to circumvent it you retard.

Is this really what we want?
Shit strapped to our faces?
God damn it when we people learn that more and more graphics means more development time has to be spent on just displaying the game than making something amazing.

That is kind of the point of dwarf-fortress. Everyone talks about how awesome DF is, but nobody got the point.

This, I'm surprised nobody seems to know about the OSVR.

Prove it

You have no idea how game development works, do you?

In any system where the world is moving around you and you don't feel motion, or you feel motion but don't see things moving around you, you get motion sickness. Like reading a book in a car.
Although certain people can withstand it longer and other cannot.

Find anyone who streams VR and a game where you move in it. People here seems to not hate Broteam so I found one of his VODs. Otherwise you can look it up online on articles and shit.

twitch.tv/broteam/v/82542386
Just watch the last minute or so to find out why he stopped streaming.

This whole "I need to fucking vomit because my character moved in the game" has been all over the internet and the fact that you try to pretend that you don't believe in it is absurd.

It's super annoying to set up. And each company does their own file format. Some do 360, others 180, and some more do 3D (without the ability to turn and look around). One has made a proprietary format and player.

Whirligig is the free vr viewer (not just for porn). I hate it, as it is not user friendly at all.

But for all my complaining…
VR PORN IS GREAT! HOT DAMN, I HAVEN'T CUM THAT HARD IN YEARS!

It's not. Golem might look like it'll be a turd but their solution to motion sickness might very well be working: Control movement by leaning. Lean forward to move forward, lean backward to move backward, lean to the sides to strafe. Basically, replace the analog stick controlling movement with your upper body. This way the change in optical flow is initiated by a body movement that naturally has this expected effect, eliminating motion sickness from that source. What remains is the problem of low framerates and turning. Digital turning in discrete steps has proven effective, low framerates remain but are a solvable problem.
So, no, teleporting faggotry isn't the only solution, just the one most fitting for the roomscale wagglan gimmick.

OP, if you want a taste of VR without spending much, get one of those "cardboard" headsets, most of them go for less than $20.

If you really want one, then wait until the tech has improved immensely to allow true haptic feedback and until an actual game is released that makes great use of the tech without feeling gimmicky.

Which is never, cause devs nowadays care more money than fun.

*care more about

I already have one.

But with room scale, you're moving both in and out of the game, 1:1

That's not room scale movement
That's sitting still in a chair and having the in-game character move

Yes that's exactly what I said retard. What you think I meant "moving in a 2m by 2m space makes you puke"? Are you retarded? And how the fuck are you going to make a game that takes place in a 2m by 2m space at most anyway?

...

plz don't do it user

-vr owner

First, that's only the minimum play area
Second, very easily
Has vidya really fallen so far that you faggots can't even remember games that aren't open world action-adventures?

First learn what context is.

Actually you can have room scale or just standing/sitting with the vive if you don't have any room.
Also the room-scale system doesn't make you puke because you're actually moving around with the game.

I was responding to this guy, not you, cf4bb2

It does if the framerate drops.

Well that's not a problem of the intended vr system, it's a hardware problem.
That's like saying "you shouldn't buy icecream because what if it melts?"

It's not a HW problem, it's a SW problem. You can do sufficient res and framerate on a toaster. You can also produce a stuttering mess on an absurdly expensive shiny new beast of a machine.

Okay, I admit that I was wrong there. But any vr system in general will make you puke if the framerate drops, not just the room-scale vr. But software isn't as much as a problem, because we're talking about how it's intended to work, not if it screws up.

Spending money on video games is stupid. You should invest it instead.

That parallel universe you're inhabiting must be pretty nice. Let me tell you a little about how it works in the universe the rest of us are inhabiting:
SW screws up
ALL
THE
FUCKING
TIME.
Even on fixed platforms where optimization is at least feasibly possible. Even when the job is done by real professional programmers knowing their shit. And you tell me it's not a problem on an open platform with literally billions of possible configurations running SW made by indy devs that went indy because they couldn't get a job in the proper industry?
I'm not one of the VR naysayers, but… nigga please. Roomscale isn't the magic bullet.

Wait until the inevitable crash of vr instead, where you could probably pick these things up for dirt cheap as people liquidate this garbage.
