"Black Lives Matter Rally
On Sunday, August 20th, 2017, at 5:00 PM, we gather to honor those who have fallen as a result of racial discrimination, or have been oppressed at the hands of institutional racism. In addition to recognizing the lives of Christopher Clapp and James Means, who lost their lives to senseless acts of violence, Black Lives Matter: West Virginia also extends its deepest condolences to the family of Heather Heyer, who was standing up against racism and oppression.
On the heels of the tragic events that took place in Charlottesville, Virginia, where white supremacist and Neo-nazi groups openly expressed hate and violence, and when we have a President who not only refuses to forcefully condemn these racist acts of violence, but often encourages them it is imperative that we stand in solidarity with all people and uplift those whom have been socially excluded which includes people with limited mobility, individuals that have experienced disenfranchisement, low-income individuals, individuals experiencing homeless, people who belong to our LBGTQ community, people struggling with addiction, people who are or who have been incarcerated, indigenous communities, the working class, those who are not college educated, and religious groups that experience discrimination and persecution. We see you. We see all of you. Love and unity will prevail. #hatehasnohomehere
Event details:
When: Sunday, August 20th, 2017 at 5:00-7:30PM
Where: We will be gathering on the North Side steps of the WV Capitol Complex (NOT the river side). Due to other events taking place at the Capitol such as Mountain Stage and the interim legislative session, carpooling is highly recommended. Meters will be blocked off and bagged, however the parking garage will be open for public use.
Public safety and a commitment to the power of nonviolence is PARAMOUNT to this event. We have been working closely with the Charleston and Capitol Police Departments to ensure public safety. We expect there to be counter protestors around the Capitol and it is crucial that everyone who attends the rally DOES NOT ENGAGE with counter protestors in words or action on the way to the rally, at the rally, or after the rally.
To adhere to active nonviolence, the following behaviors are expected and requested of all attendees:
1. Participate in an authentic and peaceful way. In doing so, you contribute to the health and longevity of this community.
2. Exercise consideration and respect in your speech and actions.
3. Demeaning, discriminatory, or harassing behavior and speech will not be tolerated.
4. Alert community leaders if you notice a dangerous situation, someone in distress, or violations of this Code of Conduct, even if they seem inconsequential.
Weapons policy
The Capitol Complex prohibits all weapons, including open carry and concealed. Weapons include but are not limited to guns, explosives (including fireworks), and large knives such as those used for hunting or display, as well as any other item used for the purpose of causing injury or harm to others. Community members are further expected to comply with all state and local laws on this matter.
I would cut this part out, I think you get at all of this in prior bullet points.
The following behaviors are considered harassment and are unacceptable within our community:
1. Violence, threats of violence or combative language directed against another person.
2. Sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist or otherwise discriminatory jokes and language.
3. Posting or displaying sexually explicit or violent material.
4. Posting or threatening to post other people’s personally identifying information (“doxing”).
5. Personal insults, particularly those related to gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, or disability.
6. Inappropriate physical contact. You should have someone’s consent before touching them.
7. Unwelcome sexual attention. This includes, sexualized comments or jokes; inappropriate touching, groping, and unwelcomed sexual advances.
8. Deliberate intimidation, stalking or following (online or in person).
9. Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behavior.
10. Sustained disruption of community events, including talks and presentations"
