So after playing Hotline Miami, Geometry Wars and Halo: Spartan Assault (I'm that much of a Halofag, don't worry since I got it from the share threads), I realized that I have a soft spot for this genre. Any more games to recommend? I know Hatred exists but did they already add mod support?
Top-Down/ Twin-Stick shooter recommendations
Other urls found in this thread:
I'm gonna get shit on for this but Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime is ok for a quick runthrough with friend(s), but if you play singleplayer expect a world of pain later on when AI teammates shit the bed. You could just quit when that happens.
It's actually decently challenging aside from incompetent AI teammates adding artificial difficulty last boss is a joke tho.
Crimsonland/Neon Chrome
Alien Shooter
Assault Android Cactus
Smash TV
That's what I can think of at the moment.
Emulate the original Robotron 2084 arcade game, the great-grandaddy of all twin-stick shooters and still one of the best.
Ubermosh
I play it on my Vita everyday, the best 3 bucks I've ever spent (except for Risk of Rain)
Also the Sigma-Team games
I uploaded them long time ago on the first share threads, it should still be there. Give them a try, starting with Zombie Shooter
Muthafuckin Crimsonland, can't recommend it enough. I'd even go as far as to recommend buying it, devs deserve it imo. Both Steam and GOG versions are bundled with the original (which I think is better than the remake). If you want one on psp you can get a shallow rip off called Dracula - Undead Awakening.
Nuclear Throne is worth a pirate, even if some of the devs (or one dev, I don't know) is a massive cunt. Plays like a mix between Crimsonland and Binding of Isaac.
Can't recommend either Enter the Gungeon or Neurovoider. Neurovoider because it's not out yet and I haven't had a chance to play it, Enter the Gungeon because it's shit.
plus everything suggested by other anons.
I haven't really played some of these, so take it with a grain of salt:
Nation Red is supposed to be good, but I never liked it.
Shadowgrounds series always looked intriguing, but again, I haven't had the chance to play it.
Alien Swarm was fun while it lasted. I still can't believe I've accumulated over 12 hours of playtime, considering how short it is.
Helldivers is fun as fuck according to everyone.
Postal can be pretty fun, don't know how Redux compares to the original.
Crimsonland also comes bundled with a secret minigame based off 2048 or it came first, I'm not sure when Gembine was added.
it's fuckin intense
my best is 238
Or wait I think Threes was the original game? I don't know.
It's been a very long time since I played Shadowgrounds, but avoid Shadowgrounds: Survivor. It adds a story focus and you switch between three characters, which limits the weapons you can use to whatever character's story segment you're currently in. They are creatively named Marine, Napalm and Sniper.
Depends on what you look for
(can cause score autism, imo the best among the genre right now with Robotron)
(the original is basic but very intense, BLACK is way more intense, Vol 3 just throws you into an open field and gives you the middle finger)
(a C&Ded clone of geometry wars that was better than the original, also free)
**(It's really intense and really good, only thing I don't like is permanennt upgrade but that's just me)
For all your straight arcade needs.
For painting the town red (aka there's no story, scoring isn't really interesting and you pretty much just blow shit up)
(it's not that great but decent roguelite top down shooter are few)
(I know I'm stretching on that one but it has a lot of elements from top down shooters and you can play it like one)
For muh roguelite
(just pirate that one it's way too expensive for what it is, the BUILD engine shooter derived from it is actually better than the main game)
For slower story based stuff
For when you want a seizure
Now if you're up for some emulation you can look at (and definitely play at-least the first two)
Step up your game user
...
Nobody mentioned Binding of Isaac yet?
I think Leap of Fate is also a pretty good roguelite too.
...
underrated game
Binding of Isaac doesn't play like your average top down / Twin Stick shooter, it'd be more suitable to call it a rogue-like game.
I should know, I've probably clocked in over 300 hours into both versions.
Wait, is it out? This is the first time I've heard about the project and all I can find about it on google is forum postings and this interview: archive.is
Most of the stuff you guys recommend is good.
Now, this one, if anyone is curious
AVOID IT LIKE A PLAGUE
ITS PURE HERESY
I had never heard of it until now but it does look pretty good.
Vaguely reminds me of Vyruz, which is also a decent isometric shooter.
Q4 2016.
looks like it's not quite a twinstick shooter, since you're always moving in the direction you're aiming. He recommends you pick up all the money you find because saving costs ingame money. He also suggests you turn off the sounds and music because it has a very repetative soundtrack and a shitty announcer (at least in the rooskie version, eng version doesn't sound much better).
Yeah, I'd agree that Brigador looks like a cross between Vyruz and Future Cop.
Wait, my bad, this gameplay clearly shows there is strafing.
It is but it's a bit RNG because the skills you can get are randomized every time, for example a really good skin could go on for cheap or be at the start of the tree where you can get it early and just wreck shit(example: Vandalism) or be at the ass end of a tree that you rarely get cards for.
Sounds like a TSS to me. The only difference is that shots can be arced with momentum and that instead of a giant room for level it's broken into smaller randomized rooms. Hell there's even a mode where you play it entirely in a room against hordes of enemies
and it's not a roguelike or a roguelite goddamn
I'll call it a metroidvania if I want to, there isn't a better term that I know of that would describe a difficult to learn and even more difficult to master top down shooter with items and permadeath.
DTLAEMDTMTDSWIAP doesn't exactly roll off your tongue.
Probably just my shareware era nostalgia but the game really isn't as bad as it looks and sounds but it has the defaults of that era (namely lacking gameplay variety, kinda low production value in some area, and very punishing difficulty unless you stick to easy/normal)
Yeah the announcer (well technically the person you're playing as) is really not that great except with french voices.
geometry wars 3
Bombshell?
It's mediocre and it falls in this trap of having "witty" one liners that keep repeating themselves over and over again.
Get over that fucking car already
Does Ring Runner :flight of the sages and Grimbal count as twin stick shooters? also Pineapple Smash Crew
I don't know about Grimbal but Ring Runner isn't a twin stick shooter because you still need to rotate the ship to fire in a direction.
Even though ring runner is a 10/10 GOTYAY and you are my nigger for having played it
Dead Nation is pretty fun. I think it's crossbuy on PS4/3/Vita as well.
So you have no idea what genres are, then?
Well what would you call it then?
A twinstick shooter?
Yes? Did you even read
NO
Yes.
It's not.
Shoot yourself.
I dunno man, in my book twinstick shooters have to fast paced and frantic, BoI is very slow and methodical (at least the first 50 hours are).
Now what's wrong with paying for a product you liked by devs whom you don't have a reason to hate?
GTA 2 is the spiritual predecessor to Hotline Miami.
I don't know what is likeable in this and why would you pay for that. It's almost as bad as FE:F.
Renegade
Fucking
Ops
level-ups are enabled by default now
never said crimsonland was shovelware
Like I've already said, it comes with the classic version as well and good luck finding the original alone
To elaborate; top down shooter where you drive around in cars and wreck shit. Apparently the devs for Just Cause II did a top down view for the game at one point, decided it was awesome and they weren't going to keep it for JC2.
So they made this instead. Runs on the same engine as Just Cause II so it's pretty enough, and you drive cars around and blow the shit out of everything. Gloriously cheesy and over the top. I loved playing this game, and they even released a bit of dlc with another mission. Sadly, nothing else since. I still live in hope of a Renegade Ops II.
PC version even gives you Gordan Freeman as a playable character.
It was also part of the SEGA giveaway event, so you may have it in your library and not know it.
Alright, but there are still new flaws introduced with nothing to make up for them.
Steam comments say that they've butchered a classic too a bit.
Don't know if the CD still works or if I still have it even. I remember there was a version of Crimsonland in share thread's MEGA archive, but I don't know which.
Wait, you haven't played it? Try it out, it's worse than the original, sure, I've admitted that from the start, but it's still a fun game.
Tell me, if I were in the mood to play crimsonland, why would I play new over the old one?
Smash TV and Total Carnage
No reason.
Just said that devs deserve the money for a good game and the only way I know you can buy the original is if you buy the remake.
If you want some survival up in your top-down/twin-stick shooter, I recommend Teleglitch and Noct.
Soldiers of Fortune should be included in that as well. If we're going to add those two, may as well complete the trifecta.
Just downloaded it. Seems ok but disappointing it not a real twin stick shooter. You can map the right analogue in MAME (and buttons) to aim your fire. Oh but you did remind me of two really great top down shooters (that are also not twin stick) that needs to be on this list made by the same guys who made Metal Slug.
this thread seems ripe for some rec chart oc
I can't into graphs and drawing software in general. The only graph I've ever made was the double Weird Old Games graph.
God I hate playing Shiitake.
It's pretty much old crimsonland with a few changes and 3D instead of 2D, I don't really know what's not to like about it.
Meh it's okay for the usual story based ones
Took me a couple hundred hours to get really good with her, the two main tricks are knowing how much damage enemies take and knowing that switching weapons is about 27% faster than firing the railgun again (0.733sec vs 1 sec)
After that it's a matter of knowing the levels (spawn areas and composition) and being able to keep your rhythm throughout it.
Forgot the embed
What are your thoughts on Dead Ops Arcade from Black Ops 1? I have a copy of it lying somewhere in my room. Is it worth revisiting Black Ops 1 just to play it because I ignored it when I played Black Ops before.
not if my memory serves me correctly
>unlock drossel starch
>best girl bot all around
I'm buying it.
This is how you make video games.
Fallout Brotherhood of Steel.
Honestly one of my all time favorite games.
:^)
How do you get that, is that a controller only thing?
Oh wait nevermind I'm being retarded, it's a demo thing.
What boggles my mind is that back in the day everyone shat on BOS, but praised Dark Alliance games like second coming of Diablo 2.
While it was the same as BOS but with DND skin instead of Fallout skin.
Pretty fun games yeah.
I just hope the full game doesn't force you to redo those levels. I will if it does
God tier taste. Cactus best murderbotfu.
This game is getting better and better.
What was the one top down shooter where you played as mages and whatnot?
Leap of Fate?
