That's just how video games are
It's just that it's been around for a while there's so many dumb old conventions and missing quality of life improvements. I know how to mod it but it's just so much effort for little gain yknow?
What exactly do you feel is missing, wrong, or needs to be modded in?
Unless it's an issue on my end, the server is fucked.
Everybody go home.
Show me your toon if you think you're so much better then.

It's not a bad little composition, if you just…

THE DEADEST
I want to give this game a try, last time I played I killed the hell boss, I think it was called the wall of flesh, that was years ago though. I want to give it another try.
since when are there storms like this?
They don't start happening until hardmode.
killed moonman on expert a few days ago, what do i do now?
ive beaten hardmode. since when are there storms?
those are for the new update you nigger, they arent in the game yet
I can see some repeated textures while they're stationary. Still a great effect.
why is moon man a nigger
coz they wuz aliens an shiiiieet
The more they keep adding enhancements like this, the more I feel like this game could benefit from mods.
I also don't understand how the engine is supposedly "at it's limit". As an /agdg/ myself I don't see why you couldn't add separate dimensions (e.g. planet core, sea, space) and shit. All you need is a way to move the character from a map to another without stopping gameplay. Furthermore space doesn't even have to be a "map", just like starbound it could only be your space ship floating about, with maybe mobs flying outside.
And I mean, even if your ship was built from blocks, in order to move the ship between locations all you need to do is copypaste a chunk from the map (the ship blocks) to a different map. There's so much you could do that I don't see any reason why you wouldn't "be able to".
Well, it could be an excuse for
"Codebase has started to become convoluted and with our experience from it, we think we'd like to start from scratch and improve the graphics"
Is anyone there?
When they say it's at it's limits what they mean is that Terraria has reached the point that if they wanted to add any NEW BIG element they would have to go in and seriously refactor and rewrite the code. Terraria was never envisioned to be as big and complex as it is now and so Red probably didn't didn't leave proper hooks to expand it significantly. So it's probably more of a diminishing returns thing rather than a hard limit. Although there ARE some hard limits. Apparently 4 colors of wires is all the engine can manage, at least with how they are currently implemented. Also world size is pretty constrained to the current Large size. Pushing it larger can actually cause the world to fail to generate and have issues with saving it if it does generate.
Not sure how the code looks, been years since I checked, and red wires were still new back then.
Anyways, given my experience with XNA, they probably store it as a byte or an enum type. 8 flags would correspond to on/off states and placement values for up to 4 colors. It's pretty compact in that way.
What I really want to see is like, more "survival" things. Like when I tried to mod it, I let you grind rocks to get salt, gather jungle water to dry for sulfur, and burning wood for charcoal so you could make black powder. This would then be craftable into bullets, bombs, and grenades.
Play it guise, it's fun.
Refactoring happens all the time, and they've probably had to do a ton of that over the years. Unless the entire thing is a horribly hardcoded mess (which might be the case considering Terraria's humble beginnings), I don't see why it would be difficult to add for example multiple dimensions, it's almost literally just an in-game map switch.
You'd have to disconnect the world from the game loop and turn it into a module that can be switched with another. Admittedly I've never made anything as big as Terraria, but from my perception terraria isn't necessarily "big", it just has a lot of content. And by content I mean items and blocks and mobs that spawn in the world and can be crafted and whatever, the most complicated thing appears to be the world generation and that's totally separate from the gameplay. You could modularize and streamline features one by one, it's not like they've stopped working on Terraria anyway.
There's always the chance that Red simply does not want Terraria to expand in a big way because he wants to keep that for Otherworld or Terraria 2. Honestly that's what I'd do too, because Terraria is kinda bloated and overextended, it would be difficult to add meaningful space content because of how extreme your equipment are by the time you reach moonman.
Terraria is really not made with that kinda thing in mind I think. Most of terraria content is in the exploration and combat, so I feel you'd have to do a terrafirmacraft-tier total overhaul of everything to make "survival" work.
