Haven't seen this discussed on it's own thread so I thought I would start one..

I loved what 4 did to make characters *actually unique* on an aesthetic and practical level (by adding different defence, attack, health levels etc) which really set it apart from other fighting games IMO.

Soul calibur was already one of the only fighting games to allow custom characters (3) and to add this new dynamic in 4 felt bretty good..

4 was actually one of my favourite fighting games, and one of my favourite games anyway which I felt was pretty ironic because I probably only bought it for tits. :/

5 felt absolutely retarded but had nice character creation.. Sold it, no regrets. The game literally had nothing else going for it in my opinion.

I don't know, I've never played 5 and only put above 4 for shitposting purposes.
The important thing to take away from my post is that SC 1 is better than SC 2.

It's hard to go back to 4 after playing 5.

But if there's one thing 4 does better, it's that the custom character parts fit the characters much better. In 5 they float so far away from the body that you don't want to use them as they look like shit.

Oh, and the music. Some of the composer do alright, but whoever thought that having Inon Zur compose for a fighting game was a good idea deserves to be shot.

Why? I can see people liking II and III more because of content or in II case, the gameplay style that is really different than IV and V but IV doesn't have single player content and the gameplay is the worst of the series with the busted GI system, retarded Hilde and critical finishes. SCV fixed many problems having the best gameplay of the series since II (they're just too different to compare) and the best customization (HEX edit makes the things even better).


We can also discuss, the supposed leaked character designs for the new game
Sophitia might be back from the dead because she's Hoshino's waifu fucking up even more the story but Cassandra who was canonically just MIA nowhere to be found. Also, Hoshino is responsible for Lost Swords so I have no hope for the series even if the actually announce an actual game during gamescon.

Damn man, Only played 4, 5, 2 and 3, and I'm afraid to say that I haven't played the latter anywhere near long enough to give them all decent ranking from best to worst.

But what about the unique shit that 4 had? The tower, the less c-c-c-combo oriented gameplay *and* characters that felt like they had an actual individual persona in an RPG kinda way..

In all my hours of gameplay, critical finishes barely came up (if at all).

All SC V had when I last checked was a lame story mode with *HIDEOUS* writing, cringey voice acting, and arcade that was broken thanks to the Nightmare weapon style being the most OP rediculous ass faggot in the entire game (One handing a two handed sword being faster than two hands on a two handed sword?? Really??)..

So many things in that game I really could never forgive.

I'm a bit concerned in case the new game is a bit like that lost souls shit.. I never tried it, but I had assumed it was the worst of SC V so I never even touched it.. Guessing I didn't miss much

Compare that to an arcade mode with branching storyline with multiple endings, many different challenges and Chronicles of the Sword from III. Weapon Master mode from II also should not be compared at all with the later games. The tower from IV is just a grinding fest that doesn't even tell what you need to do before a few tries and the arcade mode doesn't explain half the shit that happens during like some NPCs appearing and disappearing.
I rather play Quick Battle from V which has an actual variation of CPU styles and AI mimicking online battles and the boss rush of Legendary Souls and unlock things by leveling up than that tower bullshit.

SCV was the first game that I saw with a good lobby system and a great netcode on top of that.

Nigga, did you even play the game? Nightmare is sort of good but has many unsafe moves that you can just 8-way run away and his sword is big so any short ranged character can beat him at close range.

Also Patroklos was a loveable cunt in the story mode wth his "justice to the malfested". If you think SCV had hideous writing, can you even explain SCIV story?

Aris knows what's up. If Namco wants SCVI to succeed and the franchise to be back in the limelight, what they need to do is make a SCII 2, go back to the roots. II was the high point for the series by a very wide margin.

I really hope they make SCVI after Tekken 7. 7 looks like it was really given a lot of time and love put into it instead of being a rushed cash grab like the previous titles after 4 and Tag1. I would love to see SCVI get the same treatment. Street Fighter V fucking up horribly was such a great thing for fighting games, I think this is the perfect time for 3D fighters to shine once again, with Tekken 7 leading the charge.

Well it was never the pinnacle of gaming it was just something I sunk a lot of hours into, always wanted to play the previous games but SC3 ran really slowly on my emulator (when I first got around to playing it) and 2 was cool but I didn't really get by on the lack of customisation and it was only the free version on PS market so I'm not sure if it had all the features of the actual game..

I suppose what I was really looking for was a fighting game with RPG elements, which is why 4 and the concept of 3 interested me so much.

I actually liked the tower for that, it felt cool trying to figure out what the messages meant and even If I cbf with it i'd just look it up online.

Okay you got me there, it was pretty cut and dry, everyone going for one of the two swords yadayada.. For the most part, better than SC5 though because at least it never made me physically recoil or turn every muscle in my face to an active cringe every other cutscene.

The story was not what stood out for me in 4 though in anycase, just used it to level up the weapon styles.

Well I suppose I meant siegfried weapon style was broken(severely nerfed).. In comparison to the previous games *WHICH I CHECKED* and a few standard moves are actually a lot slower in 5, and slower than nightmare's weapon style.

I'd be battling him straight for half an hour at a time yea I know I sucked at 5 as well and he'd just be rekking me because I was so used to the movesets in 4 and they'd just made everything c-c-c-c-combo bullshit.

I'm not saying SCIV is the worst thing ever. It's just there are better games in the series that does what it tried to do.
If you like so much RPG elements in a fighting game, you'll love Chronicles of the Sword from III(you should be aware of the memory wipe bug) or Weapon Master from II. For single player, III is by far the best one. I wish bamco ported the Arcade Edition balances and fixes on the console port as an HDrelease like II had. "Soul Calibur III: AE HD" or something like that with online features.
For gameplay, the classic gameplay was nailed with Soul Calibur II and the modern more action oriented was better on SCV.
CAS you have SCIII with tons of movesets to choose and V has tons of customizations and with HEX edit you can even do crazy things like having a secret transformation for your character and have parts in places that shouldn't be there.
Even guest character V handled better than IV (II had Link for the gamecube for version godammit so it's moot point) as Ezio meshed better with the cast and was better balanced than the broken starkiller, Vader and Yoda who couldn't even be grabbed.

As for your Siegfried complain. He's far from being at Tira level but he's not good like Mitsurugi and Viola. He's shit at close range but his zoning is great. Has insane grab range and stances for different purposes. But he's a more defensive character and needs meter for damage.

By the way the story of SCIV is that suddenly a huge tower appeared with Algol, the first man who used Soul Edge without going insane and the creator of Soul Calibur, wanting to rule the world or something like that. I think Mitsurugi busted his ass into sword limbo. Also Tira made Sophitia protect Soul Edge telling that if Soul Edge was destroyed, Pyrrha, who was a malfested, would die.

I mean, Siegfried is a more defensive character with tools for zoning and a better grab range while Nightmare you can go nuts since his damage and speed are so high but a wrong move and you're fucked. Both are pretty bad at close range.

I've been playing SCIV again, and it's really annoying how in the character creation your character is blasted with light, which obscures the colors. Seems to happen no matter which stage you use as a background.

Also the endings all taking place atop the tower is pretty boring.

Soul caliber 3 introduced customization, Soul caliber 4 increased what you can do with it, and 5 made it godlike.

As for the gameplay, it evolved over the games, and shit got added, shit got quicker, it's generally a really good series.

If you've played the first one, the general idea is the same. Instead of combos, the idea is all about punishing instead of combos, which in later games allowed for some serious back and forth intense combat between players.

I have fond memories of soul caliber 4, where one of my best matches had both me and my (online) opponent in pure zen mode, where we were trading blows lightning quick, blocking and returning, over and over until one of us fell.

Shit gets even better as it goes on. Soul Caliber 5 has a gimped story mode, though. Everything else in 5 is damned good, however.

I haven't seen any Ivy cosplayers that I think do her justice, including these, but there's a model named Marie-Claude Bourbonnais that I think could pull it off very well.

Still betting Solaire is going to be the next guest character.

Reading that thread archive though makes me wish for Guts to be a guest character for SC, hes just begging for it

You can emulate the gamecube version of II on Dolphin. Like I said, III is the best for single player content and II and V are the best for gameplay with V having the best customization system.

Needless complexity is something that has contributed to the death of all the at least casually popular fighting game series.

The exact same thing applies to Soul Calibur, Dead or Alive and even shitty Tekken. Tekken is a cancer and its own worst enemy. The movement mechanics are the antithesis of fun. There is almost no limit to how much you exploit it except the limit of your inputs so people practice it as much as possible to walk around those who can't do it as fast. Which makes it feel rather strange that the movement inputs are the most effective element in contrast to hitconfirming long combo execution shit. But back to where we were at;

SC, DOA and Tekken all lengthened the number of inputs to combos and decreased the amount of damage they do. It means more practice required and more to memories for new players, it means more ways for older players to dominate newer players with a higher damage output even while they already have more experience and it means more waiting for your opponent to end their turn before you can fight back.

It's fucking stupid. Also DOA5 looks like ass compared to DOA2-4. Since Itagaki left that piece of shit company have just been recycling on all the work he put in. They can't even do lobby functions in their ports, sweet Jesus.

Namco don't want to compete SC against their precious Tekken. Tekken has more brand power even when it's completely against what would be best for consumers in the long run.

Tekken will sell for technical graphical prowess a little once again but the sales are going to decline. There is next to no interest in it. Nobody actually gives a fuck, let the reality sink in.

There are various factors, again, for the decline of 3D fighters, including stream-friendliness and a shift in buying of wider non-specialised audience, but the companies aren't helping themselves at all.

All 3D fighters online are dead outside of Tekken which is half dead as there are lots of normalfags who only play Tekken. You will find matches, especially through lobbies, but in the grand scheme of video games and even comparing as part of a niche genre, it's dead.

SC2 is IMO the best 3D fighting game ever made. It emulates like a dream on Dolphin and it's only like 1.2 GB, definitely give it a shot.

Street Fighter 5 is shit, tons people are looking for a game to fill the void it left, this is the best chance 3D fighters have to make a massive comeback. I have a really good feeling that once Tekken 7 hits consoles and PC it's going to be fucking huge and SCVI will follow. I'm hoping they make it more like SC2 than the recent titles. On release, Soul Calibur V was by far the cleanest playing and best balanced game of the series. Well, unless you count 2 without glitches. I felt it was worth the tradeoff of the missing single-player content if the fixed multiplayer made 3D fighters really viable again.
Then the team started making pants-on-head retarded balancing decisions and I bailed. Before anyone accuses me of being salty, they didn't even nerf any of my preferred characters much at all, they just made it clear they were listening to the opinions of casuals at large. Leixia was already much more reasonably balanced than Xiangua ever was, for example, but they nerfed her anyway because retards can't handle quick/weak characters. Or Viola's B+K BE that got bumped from 10 damage (plus setup potential) straight to 50.

On the other hand I missed Taki, my main from 2, Natsu was no replacement, and honestly I kind of loved the over the top sexualization of 4. I guess I'm a shitlord.

I know this is not a DOA thread but you must be dellusional to think DOA4 is better than 5. Finally back to the arcades, extended support from the devs, new different and popular characters, competitive system with tourney support and other things.
What is the hold mechanic? You even has characters with focus in holds like Marie Rose and others that aren't ninjas not focused on combos.

In SCV, combos varies depending on the character. You have bullshit Viola like addressed and you have others more simple like Astaroth and Pyrrha Omega.

SCIIIAE hack (it is an arcade-only game) removes Ivy and has many bugs resulting in a crash. It's also really hard to find (don't know if I still have it). I have SCIII on my PS2 so I don't know about emulating. But it looks fine in the video here.

What glitches are you talking about? Stuff like 2G and sideguarding actually added to the depth of the game and made characters that weren't the greatest way more viable.

Guts is a pretty perfect fit for SC. Nightmares moveset would go naturally with him.

While I find near to impossible to have Nightmare without his moveset, It would nice to see a new villain without losing Nightmare style with Guts.

I am getting conflicting messages from the way she dresses and that. That is a perfectly valid motivation, but sex appeal doesn't really make sense when a large portion of her enemies are women. Her outfit also kept getting smaller as she aged.

Well, technically, she didn't actually age, but you're right that the outfits have been getting smaller. I thought her SC2 outfit was perfect, and they kind of started getting ridiculous after that.

Not really, they toned down a lot of the designs in SCV. Not just "sex appeal" but Siegfried doesn't have that crystal armor, Nightmare with a black hole between his floating torso and his legs, rock golem Astaroth, busy looking pirate Cervantes and so on.
On the other hand, Algol is almost naked in V.


Cervantes wasn't a great father. Maybe she thinks acting like a slut will keep men from getting near her in the 17th century for some reason.

My favorite Ivy costume will forever be the unlockable red suit from 2.
I was disappointed at the removal of unlockable costumes later on, especially since the customization system they replaced it with was a bitch to get a good-looking outfit for anyone other than an oc donut steel.
