The Denisovan or Denisova hominin ( /dᵻˈniːsəvə/ dɛ-NEE-sə-və) is what was once thought to be an extinct species or subspecies of human in the genus Homo. Pending its status as either species or subspecies it currently carries the temporary names Homo sp. Altai, or Homo sapiens ssp. Denisova. In March 2010, scientists announced the discovery of a finger bone fragment of a juvenile female who lived about 41,000 years ago, found in the remote Denisova Cave in the Altai Mountains in Siberia, a cave that has also been inhabited by Neanderthals and modern humans.
In a ground breaking study by Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology announced Aug 10th 2017. DNA researcher Svante Pääbo tested more than 70 North Korean specimens, preliminary DNA sequencing from individuals in North Korean have shown an admixture ranging from 12% to 41% Denisovan DNA in samples tested from individuals from Ryanggang Province along North Korea's border with China. Many questions have arisen based on this study. Will the United States continue to persecute an ancient species of Homo sapiens long thought extinct? The Neurophysiology department at the University of Lund has speculated that these rare Homo sapiens may actually think and act differently due to genetics and their long isolation from modern Homo sapiens.
