Quick rundown on the origins of that S:

Here's the thing: NOBODY knows where the S originated from. Everyone who uses it learned it off of someone else, and logic dictates that surely there must have been a source sometime, somewhere in the world, except that no one has ever come forward for it. The logo just popped up sporadically on an international scale so you wouldn't even be able to trace it back to a specific region. It's just something people started doing simultaneously whilst being thousands of miles estranged from each other.

A lot of people seem to think it came from the Stussy clothing company, but if you ring them up they'll tell you they never used it as their logo, with an image search digging up either the graffiti-looking logo with the full word, or the two S's intertwined within a circle. If people here genuinely believe that it was Stussy's logo and can recall it from memory, then I guess it's more fucking with the timeline on the same level as when they removed the cornucopia from the Fruit of the Loom logo, and the mystery shall forever remain in a Schrodinger state.

Another load of people recall using it in a Scholastic book from the 1970s for basic drawing skills and/or brain-teasers, however, no-one has managed to dig up a copy with the relevant glyph inside. Furthermore, something as widespread as this wouldn't have appeared in just one book; you'd have seen it in several additions hence at the very least.

Superman's logo is entirely different, and I guess the confusion stemmed from when people started calling it a "Super S".

Some believe it does have a gang-related origin, with many thinking it to be derived from the Mexican Sureno gang sign, but once again that S is entirely different, looking more like an Initial/Dropped-cap S.

The strongest theory I've heard is that it's based on Suzuki's logo, as they have used it since their inception in 1958, right around the time when the oldest users of the S started reporting seeing it. Still though, it's not quite the same shape and I don't think the brand itself started to get a major foothold in the West until the 1980s.

I'm thinking it may have been part of one of, if not the very earliest psy-ops to instill a specific thought within as widespread a group as possible, giving it a memetic status as soon as possible and having it maintain that status indefinitely by deliberately mistifying its origins, thus making it impossible for it to ever be dated or fresh, lying perfectly in the middle and free to be used at any time by anyone who so chooses to introduce yet another instance of the S into the world. It was the proof you could unite everyone under one idea, and the foundations for a one/new world order. If this is the case, then it would be the ultimate 'fuck you' to appropriate this S for ourselves and assign it a home, knowing we'll have won when it shows up on the (((ADL's))) schizophrenia-fueled collection of 'hate symbols'.
