One idea with art is to provide something that doesn't exist yet. Sometimes using a photograph to get the basic, most generic structures right is not just perfectly okay, but also very smart. From there you can actually focus on the stuff where you use your creativity to add value to the piece. This guy however isn't adding anything to the piece. He's basically just leeching off from others.

One is my roommate woke up and the other is that I haven't gotten any other requests other than that headcrab one. Believe me, I'd just end up tracing half the image if I actually tried to draw it. I'm not exactly an "artist" by any stretch of the imagination.

another thing is to not be afraid to move to advance subjects to your level. You don't have to focus on just mastering lines, try out other things like anatomy etc. and use what you've learned.

That's not essentially evidence of tracing. It's just evidence that they work shamelessly from references. You can tell by their technique that it's not just pure tracing and the person actually has talent as an illustrator, its just the subject matter is very dull and uninspired being that it's a replica. After sticks come simple shapes(making them thicker), once you get the hang of that, you start practicing proper anatomy and other details.

I would advice you to practice anatomy a bit more in depth, since a lot of volumes are quite off. From there you can try with more interesting poses, to make the whole piece less boring to look at. Excuse the messy sketch.

That one looks interesting enough. You can push the pose a bit more depending on what you're going for, from shyness to suspense takes some "empathy" with the character and playing with the camera/view and/or the lighting. Another thing that can improve your art is using more contrast in your shadows, they look a bit muddy for me; also, the sleeve in her right hand looks flat.

I've also started painting recently, but only as an excuse to practice gore.

Stormniggers like to think there's some kind of institutionalized agenda of driving "good" artists out, but really it's just the sense of reality that understands how artists with a capital A have to provide society a product that differentiates them from the superior mechanical solutions of capturing real life. If he wanted to capture life more literally, he should've become a photographer. He was okay at drawing, just not very interesting as a traditional artist.
