Why can't we have nice things?

When will developers stop desperately trying to push their games under a M for Mature rating – or worse, T for Teen – just so it'll sell better, censoring themselves in the process?

When will consumers start actually paying attention to ratings and stop buying M+ rated games for their kids thinking it's fine?

When will people in general realize that the medium of video games can be as legitimate a medium as film and that an adult only (see: R Rated) product doesn't have to be porn or a gorefest?

When will self-censorship in general stop being a thing among AT LEAST indie developers and self-published developers?

It is pretty shit that developers aren't ballsy enough to sell Ao rated games. Hell, the whole argument that retailers don't want to shelve Ao games doesn't even apply to smaller/indie devs who get sales primarily online.

Your retarded formatting aside, the whole thing with AO is the same as R in movies - it's a risk. And current manager mentality is "no risks whatsoever".
Hence why everything is M/T or PG-13 even though it really should be AO and R so creators can go all the way.

- when they start hating turning a profit

- never or if pushed there by laws

- when it becomes subsidised so it doesn`t have to catter to a market

- when they start hating turning a profit

the fuck is wrong with full space between lines

One, it looks like you're from reddit.
Two, excessive whitespace looks pretty fucking bad in and of itself and is only generally acceptable between two completely separate paragraphs.

Does Steam ban R rated shit? Physical stores will obviously never carry it but online sales are your best bet and, like it or not, Steam is the only way to really make big money. You can otherwise sell the game from your own site easily.

Three, it upsets mobile users. Which is really a good reason to do it.

Retailers are more than happy to sell R/M rated shit. It's when the product is rated AO or X that retailers get pissy. Unless it was taken off, Steam does allow Hatred to be sold, but I don't know about games rated AO due to sexual content.

Steam carries stuff like Hatred, Carmageddon and Postal without any problem. I

As this user says violence isn't a problem generally but sexual content is. Don't some VNs have to be censored to get on Steam?
Additionally I thought R was the same as AO but then I'm not from the USA.

Pornography is a whole different beast due to the way it's regulated aka it fucking isn't so they just don't allow selling it in shops

Are lewd VNs pornography though? They're closer to Erotica which is a different beast altogether (legally speaking anyway). I can see what you mean though: if I were Valve I wouldn't touch things without clear rules on sale, doubly so with the number of underage kids on Steam buying shit with wallet money.

L.A. Noire, come to think of it, had unclothed dead (often mutilated) bodies and was only an 18. It had its flaws but I give it some credit for not holding back on that.

AO is much more than just a risk, you basically can't sell your game on a console if it has an AO rating.

Greenlit ToS:
Before you post your game to Steam Greenlight, you must agree to the following:You have a functioning build of the core mechanics in your game that can be demonstrated in a video You own the rights to sell the game you are posting, or you have specific authorization to represent the developer You agree to the terms and conditions of the Steam Subscriber AgreementAdditionally, you agree not post any item to Greenlight that contains the following: Someone else’s game, unless you have specific authorization to do so __'''Porn, inappropriate or offensive content, warez or leaked content'''__Cheating, hacking, game exploits Threats of violence or harassment, even as a joke Games using copyright material such as assets or intellectual property without permission from the owner Soliciting, begging, auctioning, selling, advertising, referrals racism, discrimination

The porn part is interesting since there are a few VNs that actually bypass it. "rooftop spirits" or something was a recently released VN with no censoring whatsoever.
Perhaps as long as Porn isn't the main focus of the game, it's allowed there?

The "inapropriate or offensive content" however… This is double silly since it's both one of those situations where "if you have to ask…" but also just who exactly is getting offended here?
It's entertainment and it can be quarantined to it's own corner so regular users don't see it. Age checks are a thing, even online, and as long as they aren't advertized in the front page, everyone that will ever actually look at those games is looking for something similar, therefore the only people being offended would be the retards actually looking to be offended.

I remember seeing headlines of "First Adult VN on Steam" a while back so I imagine you can have AO games on Steam, you'd just have a hard time getting them on there.

There's profit to be made selling A rated games.

Fug, formatting doesn't work inside Code tags…

Kindred Spirits on the Roof
Although, it's strictly yuri so that might explain things… Valve doesn't like dicks, fancy that!

Soon.

I wish Ao games could be sold on console. Because then devs could just make Ao games and then the localization faggots will have no excuse for censoring other than "Yeah I'm a fucking prude"

Blame retailers and platform holders. The AO rating exists, and the ESRB is willing to use it. It shouldn't be a black mark–it should be just another rating label. But big retailers generally won't stock AO games, and console manufacturers won't allow AO games on their platforms.

When stores and digital distribution platforms start selling AO games (never). Steam has Hatred, but that's about it.

Kindred Spirits isn't porn. It has a few extremely tame sex scenes that don't show anything beyond tits, and they make up less than 5% of the VN.

In the US, an "R" rated movie is like an "M" rated game–it's recommended that you be 17 or older in order to buy it. Though, due to free speech laws, it's not illegal for kids to buy it. Shops just enforce the rating to avoid controversies.

The X rating doesn't exist anymore, it was replaced by NC-17.

Old men in suits believe that majority of gamers are kids who get the money for games from parents and they're right so AO equals no sales to them.

LOL

When American stores openly sell M rated games.

ew

American stores do openly sell games, you fucking retard. They don't sell AO games.

I mean they openly sell M-rated games.

Does Steam do porn?

Let's face it if you can't sell your game through Steam you lose 90℅ of your potential sales.

They do, dummy.

That's what I said.

Didn't check ID sorry, though you were the other guy

never, because the industry is owned by jews.
call me a stormfag all you want, you can't deny shit like EA and zenimax aren't the cancer killing gaming both directly by absorbing promising studios then exploiting them to death and indirectly by hiring SJWs to manage their community sites while funding organizations that further their liberal agenda.
and that doesn't even mention DLC and the jewry it's history contains.

not the first time either, their usual reaction of "more will do better" is what led to the gaming crash during the 80s when the market was flooded with sub-par garbage until it liquefied.

My bad.

With PEGI you can sell 18 rated, GTA is PEGI18 for example. Who cares? If it's legal and makes money you do it. Common sense.

Violence gives you an M rating but sex scenes is "Adult only".

I don't get the definition of "M" anyway, it's the same as "adult" to any sane person.

But you'll always have moralfags.

Yeah, I agree that PEGI is a more sensible rating system.

Only up to a point. You can have tits in an M game, but that's about it. Far Cry 3 showed nipples, for example.

Teen and Mature ratings are actually starting to flip flop, with T games featuring boobs and guts, and M games being censored for triggering content.
Personally I preferred the era of MS-DOS games where you had to play through a game to see if it was okay for kids.

what the fuck is this thread

Because money.

Take a look at movies like 300 or Deadpool. The executives wanted them to be PG so the whole family could enjoy them (i.e.: more cash flowing if your mom and granny can watch them too). Their success without sacrifying the mature content has perplexed them and now they are slowly daring to do more risky stuff (I believe they say some profanity in Suicide Squad).

Now, a teen might easily have the cash to buy a AAA movie ticket, but it's not that easy to them to have the cash for buying a AAA videogame. And many parents won't gladly buy them an AO game to their teeens.
So….

So basically it's the equivalent of an 18 in the UK?

Steam doesn't allow Ao games either, so i don't get your point.

Or, at least, not Ao rated porn games. Shit like Hatred is perfectly acceptable.

I guess I should have checked before I so it, no wonder it was so god awful.

I wouldn't know.

Supposely indie devs sell from their site.
Although, I have no idea how this works, if there's an automated process with Paypall or whatever.

Because you don't deserve nice things, you're here.

nice self-loathing cuck logic. when do we prep our bulls?
