I love shmups but i absolutely dispise most danmakus.

U.N Squadron (Arcade version), Pop'n Twinbee, Gradius III

Caladrius

1cc-ompleting Gradius 1 (arcade emulation)

Sorry about the fucked up formatting, posting from my phone .

Grats, my nigga. Gonna move onto II next or something else?

Who hype for Special Demonstrations #10?

Maybe i'll try doing it on Gradius Collection, but i wanna try my luck with R-Type first.

all hail our lord and savior xoxak

Will he ever make a new shmup PRO REVIEW, or is he too busy hiking the alps nowadays?

What do people use to play? O used to just use a Xbox 360 controller, but playing with an arcade stick these days, with sanwa parts. Feels really good

Trying the OG Raiden on MAME. Wish it was a little faster, but it's still nice.

Is a fightstick all that much better? I've just been using a controller driver that lets me reduce the deadzones so it's a little more accurate.

You should give Carrier Air Wing a shot. It's a successor to that game.

embed related: track of the OST

...

...

Not calling them 'Shoot Them Downs'

It feels really fun

As someone who doesnt know jackshit about shmups, where should I start? Something that will ease me in preferibly. I own the following consoles so anything on them would be great
And a modded Wii as well so

Also does PS2 since its BC

Fugg thats why you dont post from phones

Einhander, Gradius Gaiden, R-Type Delta, Harmful Park, Zanac X, Night Raid

I don't think this got any shmups.

Radiant Silvergun, Soukyugurentai, Thunder Force V, Cotton 2

Giga Wing 2, Chaos Field, pretty much all Naomi ports are worth playing.

Anyone have any tips to get good at games like Raiden or Cho Ren Sha?

Cho Ren Sha you can grab all 3 powerup by slipping in the middle of them and you can get the second boss to kill itself with a bit of luck.

Learn where the snipe spots are and use vulcan to shotgun bosses.

Who made the best shmups and why was it Cave?

I don't know what you mean by snipe spots.
Is vulcan the spread gun?

Vulcan's the blue one

Sniper tanks. They are just weak, run of the mill tank enemies, but they are positioned so well that they fucking kill the shit out of you before you ever knew they were there. Toaplan took that concept and turned it into an art form, their shmups were a huge influence on Raiden.

I like the "in-between" style games. Ones that aren't quite classic but not quite bullet hell, like Batsugun and Battle Garegga.

Cave is garbage compared to Psikyo.

Raiden 1 was particularly bad about this, especially with the way the screen sway works. By Raiden IV it was a lot better.

Crimzon Clover's another good example

What is the difference between classic shmup and bullet hell. I hear them used interchangeably

Did that artist do porn VNs? and what shmup game is that from?

Shitters 1945 is garbage and you should feel bad

Bullet hell or danmaku (bullet curtain) is when a majority of the screen is taken up by bullets. Danmaku is usually more slowly paced and has much smaller hitboxes so you can weave between the larger bullets. Left is shmup, right is danmaku

how come?
I've been trying to get good at that game and can only get to the 3rd stage without loosing all my lives.

Yeah, Jun Tsukasa's a hentai artist. Sengoku Blade.

It's decent, their best games imo are Dragon Blaze and Gunbird 2.

Which Steam Heart's do I play for penal pleasure?

PC-98, of course.

Has anyone here tried Caladrius Blaze?

Raiden 4 time.

Anyone played Raiden V for the Xbone?
Because the OST kicks ASS.

PC port when? :^)

Why are shmup devs so obssesed with XBOX? The 360 also had a LOT of exclusive shmups.

Any tips for Darius CS? Best plane to use?

are there any ps4 games that i should check out?

I enjoy it. If someone has to change the name to shitters, or cuck or fag then that's probably the extent of the argument.

MOSS is just retarded. All the other shmup devs have jumped ship to PC.

Hardly. Most have jumped ship to Steam, not PC. Please get it right.

Well it certainly wasn't that developer which stagnated the entire genre for a decade with their samey bullet hells and fucking awful scoring systems.

Level up.

Thanks for keeping it real

Psikyo is probably my second favorite shmup developer. Dragon Blaze is amazing and Gunbird 1 and 2 are really good too. I just really, really love Progear, though.

...

I'm sorry, but don't you mean STDs (Shoot Them Downs)?

Why has nobody mentioned The Shooting Game Weekly channel on youtube. It covers thousands of shmups in detail and has a couple video tips on how to get better at shooting

Too much CAVE dicksucking, tbh famalam

Didn't they cover Time Crisis as well?

They don't make episodes very often anymore. Aquas got swept up in the memerunning craze.

dat FTL tho

HNNNNNNNNNNNNGH

Can't wait for more DRM-crippled cancer. Fuck those sellouts.

To be honest, Degica has already contacted GoG to sell their SHMUPs there, but GoG refuses to do so because apparently they're too obscure.
Apparently GoG is stealth updating their games to include a .dll which sends back unencrypted data from your PC (such as your IP address) to GoG servers, so you're gonna get spied on regardless of what you choose.

Once again Degica apologist: GOG does not have a monopoly on DRM-free. If they wanted to do DRM-free they could have and still can remove the cancer over Steam or any other store.

And everytime we've had this discussion before jewbundle was dismissed because "reasons" then we find out that there isn't a third DRM-free platform that's serious right now.

Steam wins again, baybee.

Anti-DRM autists can get fucked.

I'm trying to beat Crimzon Clover on Unlimited. It's tough. Really tough. I've been at it for over a year, playing on and off.

Is Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu really coming to Steam? Together with ALL the arrange modes, including the Ketsui one? I really liked what Virt did with the soundtrack to that mode. The music in Daifukkatsu Black Label was really nice, too. I hope this will be my chance to get all that music from the game in high quality.

Daifukkatsu is slated for release around next month. It includes all the DLC for free, including Ketsuipachi and Black Label. Whether the soundtrack is a separate buy, I do not know. Virt's rendition of Interception is one of my favourites, and I can't wait to hear it in-game.

I won't pretend that Steam doesn't share some responsibility for providing their cancer to publishers, but the fact remains that Degica shares responsibility for choosing to use Steam DRM in the first place. You can absolutely release DRM-free over Steam. You can do it on other stores as well. Playism is a great place for PC shmup releases and they do DRM-free too, I just got Mecha Ritz Steel Rondo over it a week ago. Trying to shift all the blame on GOG as if they're the pope of DRM-free makes you sound like a shill.

Novice when it comes to this genre. I have Daruisburst on the Vita, and I was looking into the Thunder Force series on the Genesis. Is there anything else I should check out? I'm open to most anything emulatable pre-PS1(although I can play a little bit of PS1 games).

What are you interested in exactly? More horizontals? The SNES has some good introductory games as well, such as R-Type III and Phalanx. Gradius III is all right but has an assload of slowdown.

Just one or two other games. Kind of open to anything but bullet hells. Vertical or horizontal is fine. I have the Gradius Collection stowed away on PSP, and I'm willing to look into other games.

Can't go wrong with IREM over MAME.

True but with the number of games with an available DRM-free version that still have DRM on steam I'm inclined to believe it's either something that's not simple to do or that valve incentivize using their default system over what you want in some way (kinda like you can get a free dev kit for PS4 if you release exclusively for PS4).
Fuck I totally forgot about them, forget I said anything then they're maybe not the greatest (fuck the customer service) but they don't pull the same shit as GOG and actually care about niche games.
Well they're not the pope but they're the biggest DRM-free platform so it makes sense to see them as important in that regard

Oh and might be of interest to people in the thread that Mednafen Saturn apparently runs every exclusive shmups on the system.

Noted. I'll check them out. Thanks!
