The chief problem is letting helicopter mommies come to the meetings and camping trips because they can't help themselves and want to shelter their little boys by bringing air mattresses and what not. We need to make it hardcore again. Too many people get the impression that its just a gathering of autists who sing shitty campfire songs and make pine cone bird feeders all day. I personally think a huge unnoticed problem is the fact that to achieve the very first rank at the age of like 12, you have to memorize all these oaths and laws and what not. Though it may be good in the end, a kid going to a meeting after spending 8 hours at school does not want to go and have to do the same exact thing. I literally saw this alone drive 3 or 4 of my friends away from it in the very beginning. Start them off with something a bit more exciting. I was lucky in that I had a small troop with a survivalist-type scoutmaster for a little while. We used to make deerskin drums, play manhunt in the middle of the night in huge state parks where our own leaders would dress up in ghillie suits and hunt us down, play padless tackle football with bigger city troops, and shot shotguns and rifles. One of my leaders, a former marine, let me shoot his K98. There are a lot of good people involved, and there are a lot of assholes including old fogeys who care more about your lapels being straight at an inspection than actually teaching you anything. One first good move could be to honestly get fucking rid of the stupid handkerchiefs around the neck. They make the whole damn uniform look childish as hell.

The handkerchief is useful for lots of things. Be prepared with a huge bandage , or a splint , or tear it into strips for long bandages , use it as a bandana when the dust gets thick. There are hundreds of uses for a good handkerchief around the neck. The scout uniform is built on military tradition.

I knew someone was going to answer with that. I completely understand the practical uses of it. I just think it looks too goofy is all. We need to decrease the goofiness aspect of it. I love the hats. Those should be required for all leaders, at least SPL and ASPL. Give kids the feeling of looking different from everyone else because of the authority they yield. In my troop the higher of a scout leader you were, the more your babysitting duties increased. Nobody wants to do that on top of all the other things teenagers are doing now. The handkerchief could also be placed into a sort of kit that every scout is required to bring to all excursions and what not. Or maybe it could be folded up and tucked into a front pocket like with some tuxedos. That looks more badass.

Also, forbid any scout from playing Magic the Gathering at any camping event. Can't tell you how much that annoyed me and my friends who always wanted to do shit outside, you know, like you're supposed to do on a camping trip? Idk if any other scouts have similar memories of fat nerdy lardasses playing that shit allllll fucking day in a cabin while it was beautiful outside. We always wanted to form a football team or manhunt team and challenge other troops, but we could only get like 5 or so kids because everyone else was doing that all day. Infuriating. Very much so. In my State all of the boy scout troops were based out of and funded by churches and the make up & morals of the troop were depended on the church.
Mormons were the most right wing & Catholics were the least. The Methodists (My troop) were pretty far right and traditional because of all the Anabaptists (Amish with cars) that joined us.

I dropped out at Life because every fucking Eagle Project I fucking offered up was denied and they came back twice with suggestions to go help niggers.

Also dropped out at Life Scout (15) but that was because our Scout Master had to move to Wisconsin and the next guy was parent of one of the new kids only interested in doing stuff for them.
He quit later and our troop got dissolved and absorbed into some other one. Wish I would have stayed or Transferred.

I cannot wait to have children. This is a white pill. This gives me hope. Even when we become a minority, our spirit might rise again, and then we can create anew.
