Aaaand to clarify: A broken hard drive is not valuable in the slightest, unless you have information on them which is potentially recoverable, with that information being either incriminating, or somehow valuable (family photos not backed up, only copy of your master's thesis due next week). How do I know this? I repair computers 40 hours a week. I do indeed have a stack of broken hard drives, but only only because (1) too lazy to cart to dumpster and (2) I occasionally disassemble one for the neodymium magnets. If someone stole them I'd laugh and be glad I had less to carry out. If someone wanted them for a science project I'd give them to that person. Nothing about them would ever cause me to try to get them back.

Seized smashed hdd's. Hahaha even if you burn or bend, crack or cut the platters there is no point, you must shred the platters with a drillbit and repeatedly drill dozens of holes in the platter or throw the disk in a shredder, if not; the data remains easily readable by forensic methods.

If they rewrote over the magnetic data, a process that takes up to 24-48-72 hours if not weeks depending on the size of disk and the amount of re-writes, then parts of the data might be lost. If she used DOD standards rewrote the disk 12 times with what Hillary did with Bleachbit, sporadic data might still be retrievable.

Have a rear earth magnet ready. Degauss the platters with the magnet to partially destroy and corrupt most magnetic data. Then drill into the platters repeatedly untill it's a cheese grate. Then submerge the open HDD with platters into a coca cola mixture and leave it there for 12 hours to corrode the platters. Then shred the HDD in a shredder for good measure.

No local police, data recovery service or "muh anonymous hacker" can recover even this simple method of overwriting, and it would take months on end of reconstruction for the government.

Again, if you simply cut the drives in half on a cheap harbor frieght chop saw, you've taken it completely out of the realm of anything but governments with a special magnetic-domain reading electron microscope, months of time, and the money to spend on thousands of man hours of time to recover, because data recovery services rely on machines you can mount the platters in. You can't mount a sawn-in-half platter and spin it up. "muh anonymous hackers" don't have anything but software, they rely on a functioning drive and software, and are essentially useless.

Addendum: If you don't believe me and just want extreme drive destruction beyond the realm of anyone ever to recover a single bit, then two carbon rods (you can get from lantern batteries) connected to an arc welder (harbor freight) can easily cut and melt that drive into a blob. Put the rods across some stacked fire bricks (lowes) and you have a smelting oven that will take the entire drive to a molten state. Ain't no ones or zeros coming out of a cup of molten metal.

4. Most people, especially pakis, think that smashing a HDD with a hammer will destroy it. In reality it's possible to laser scan the fragments of the broken platters to recover 95% of the information.

Hammers are shit, you can still stick the platter fragments in a STM/AFM and recover data which wasn't located explicitly on a cracked portion of the drive. You'd have bits missing all over but you could reconstruct well over 99% of the data (and get what looks like corrupt data every few hundred to thousand bytes.) For an investigation at this scale it's entirely reasonable to undergo the cost of scanning the fragments bit by bit.

Of course a shitskin can't contemplate the existence of technology that uses such magical things as "lasers".

FYI, just in case you gave this argument even a moment of consideration, any hard drive used to store federal records will have an asset ID or tag that is incredibly difficult to remove, if it's removable at all (engraved). There is a very specific procedure for destroying hard drives used to store such records and taking them out of a government facility to smash them at home is not part of that set of procedures. That whole scenario is illegal on several felonious levels.

The fact that the Marine claims to have recognized the drives as government property, along with the fact they were taken in as evidence instead of waved away as "an IT guy's junk hardware" is nearly definitive proof they were government property. Improper disposal of government property and records is a felony if not multiple felonies.

Then you can hard copy the data and convert it with recovery programs into OS-usable data (since highly fragmented data without registry info is probably not usable).
