The server has 3x skillgain, so you can get most things to a pretty decent level with a couple hours of focused work. Depending on where you go too, if you join a village you're likely able to get some pretty good quality tools off someone else who has high skills which will make things even easier.

Also what said, half the fun in wurm is working your way up from being a peasant to someone who can actually do things.

From now on, any reference to "Wish" will be the stat gain. only one stat may be maxed out, but if you complete another task you may trade your skill or stat for another one and have the maxed one reset to 20.

Oh they're connected, that's a big bay. You could follow the shoreline and get there but it'd take some more hours. If you ask in GL chat for your kingdom for a village invite you'll get one free teleport you can use to go to that village too.

I'd still like to keep playing wurm. I haven't played much the past couple days because I played a lot for a week straight and kinda burned out a little bit but I still plan on coming back within a few days if its still around.

I personally wouldn't mind a reset if it comes to it as long as you can transfer character stats over again so we don't have to re-grind skills. Also wouldn't mind setting it to PvP as I had a lot of fun in my old WO days doing some raiding/group battles. Also it gives some sense of urgency and goal beyond "grind autist levels so you can go smack animals in the forest"

With the total disarray of "what's going on?" going on and this - i'm fairly certain to go back to WRC - even if it is a dead town.

When there are no normans to pick on, bully or generally shit on - it just loses point in playing.

HOW TO MAKE WURM NOT SHIT:
1) The map needs to be smaller. 8096x8096 is too large for a band of 10something autists; the only 8k by 8k map in real wurm is Xanadu, which has THREE HUNDRED PLAYERS and literally over a thousand deeds.
A larger map means that large concentrations of mobs will exist THOUSANDS OF METERS AWAY, where it would take at least 3 hours to get to, kill them all, and get back. Larger maps are also laggier, and mission enemies are nearly impossible to find ("somewhere in the southern regions" = 1/9 of the map = 1/9 * 65,545,216 = 7,282,802 tiles to search through. SEVEN MILLION TILES). With smaller maps, mob attacks will happen more frequently, giving a better PvE experience. Our old home was like 1024x1024, with the mob density of the larger 2048x2048 servers. We were besieged hourly by the troll or crocodile menace.
2) Don't leak the fucking map files. We knew what the entire map looked like in under a day, including where every single ore vein is.
3) TURN ON REGIONAL ORE GENERATION, holy fuck. Without regional ore generation on, you get literally every single ore type in any random 30x30 square. With regional ore generation, you have to actually venture out into the wilderness, prospecting for veins and praying you can find gold or silver or iron or whatever.
4) Disable the triple combat rating bonus. It makes the entirety of PvE boring as fuck when you can literally solo dragons WITHOUT ENCHANTS OR TRUEHIT. I won't name the player who's been soloing dragons, but please realize that what you are capable of doing is not natural. In Wurm Online, you have to have 30 people banging on the dragon with enchanted 2 handed weapons in order to kill it. Here, you can solo the dragon with a shortsword.
5) PvE servers are a bad, bad thing. If you really want to disable PvP, then the better solution is to have a PvP server which is locked to a single faction, effectively removing PvP without getting all of the batshit insane restriction of PvE servers.

Part 2:
6) We need actual starter deeds, with actual traders. Wurm doesn't really behave well without them (example: deleting all of the guard towers whenever the server rebooted).
7) Mob bounties are too low, and even unbalanced. It's a 1 copper default bounty per modded mob, but 10 iron for vanilla mobs? I can either kill 100 skeletons or 400 trolls to get the same amount of money, and skeletons are weak. Deeds wouldn't have to be free if bounties were reasonable and there was a token for banking at the starter deed.
8) Altfagging can be taken too far. Fen and I could get insane amounts of faith from giving sermons to alts. I'm not supposed to be able to get from 48 to 50 faith in 5 prays and 2 sermons. Everyone on Wurm Online had at least 1 alt, but usually they were free to play (capped at 20 skill, and they don't count for sermons), and even if they weren't, it was just one.
9) Crops grow way too fast, and the fact that they never wilt is retarded. It's basically infinite cotton, wemp, food, and infinite stuff for horses to graze on. They need to take AT LEAST 2 full days to grow, and requiring actual tending with a rake.
10) The meta boardgame needs to move faster, and bad missions need to expire sooner. It would probably take 2 months for the meta board game to come to a conclusion at the rate it's moving at. This is partially due to the missions; if Magranon has a mission that's impossible (hunting a dolphin somewhere within 7.2 million tiles), then that mission is doomed to expire. But the mission won't expire for another week. Meanwhile, if a mission is completed, a new mission will appear in under 5 minutes.
11) Disable the epic curve. The epic curve was designed to accomodate servers that will have periodic wipes, not for servers that are intended to stay around forever. The actual Wurm Online epic cluster, currently with 1 player online, was originally designed to have periodic wipes. Instead, everyone on the server has 99 effective everything. With 70 weaponsmithing skill, I can improve a longsword to 90 ql, which is 99 effective. 70 -> 99, let that sink in.
12) Reduce skillgain. Getting to 90 in a skill is an extreme accomplishment; it should not be something a lone autist should be able to do in a single weekend. Getting to 90 in a skill should require military grade weaponized autism to achieve.
Wurm Unlimited doesn't work like Wurm Online did, regarding skillgain. In Wurm Online, each action only had a CHANCE to give you a skillup, and that chance got lower as your skill got higher, and it also got lower as your tools became higher quality. This was a bitch. In Wurm Unlimited, each and every action will give you a skillup. That alone is such a massive increase in skill rate that I would recommend 1x skillgain and 2-3x action speed. With every action giving a skillup, action speed is actually more important than skillgain. Alternatively, if you can figure out how to disable "every action = skillgain", that would be a viable alternative to decreasing the rates.
Oh, by the way, the 6x action speed timer makes some of my spells literally instant. That's retarded. I hope you magnons enjoyed getting instantly Drain Health'd.
13) PvE events are fun, the skeleton crusade was one of the best things ever. But don't set people's stats to 99, what the fuck. I am literally immortal.

Miscellanous: You would have to wipe everything to get many of these things to work. Also, pls enable pvp

the thing is, the server should be 'mostly pvp' with a few non pvp areas for those that want to be cozy, or avoid the raging autists.

i've got like 70 something smithing, but because the action speed is so incredibly fast, tools past q50 aren't needed for most jobs. mobs are a pushover, and everyone could easily grind themselves to self sufficient heaven.

you should also consider getting more gms if you're gonna shill it around, having a gm on at all hours is pretty important.

and to be fair, it was pretty insane to just launch our stats to 99, i expected it to be 3-4x better than my current stat, not like 1000 times better, which was actually really unfair in hindsight. one to five to a stat depending on how good it is could be alright, though, maybe, but for like, gm event rewards only, not stuff like 'be a mega autist' or 'kill the thing'

also try and restrict alts, one alt, maybe two is fine, but the autismo 5000 operation fen had was ridiculous, even if it was impressive

I just started playing this with you guys so I haven't really been through a restart like this before. I understand the world itself is reset, but will our characters maintain our skills? Will our characters even survive or do we create new ones?

If the server's going to change to PVP, wouldn't it make sense to start everybody from the same level of skills so nobody has an unfair advantage from the start? Or would there be like a PVP-zone where new shitters should just avoid until they can play with the big boys?

Everyone will begin again from the begining with the difficulty turned up a little bit more now that everyone knows what we're doing.

Things I know I can do:
turn the Combat Rating buff off
Make it take longer for crops to grow
turn pvp on
Return everyone to starting level
Return the map to a smaller one
Ensure that everyone settled before we shill to other autists
Create starting settlements

Things I may be able to do but not sure:
Change starting items
Set up specific spawn points for specific factions

One more question for you: when I first started playing the world was fucking EMPTY aside from the handful of other players. Then you had that one error and had to kinda-reset the server and suddenly the whole map was populated by animals and monsters. The most important thing about the starting items is that 50 QL longsword. You're not really starting from 0 if you have a sword that can 3 shot rats, in the early game fighting a rat is supposed to be really hard. Part of the magic was spawning as a weakling, where even large groups could not kill stronger enemies without massive casualties.
See picture. We thought we were so smart, making a building that we could hide inside of from all the hostile mobs… until a scorpion clipped inside and slaughtered all of us. It took like 5 of us to kill it with our 10 ql longswords, and I think it was only so easy because it was trapped inside.

i second this, the q50 longsword is awfully strong

full leather armor and a decent shield is also strong, you can easily take rivets to the armor and make studded leather that's impable from starter gear

Rolf is like a jewed version of Toady, they both make really great yet underplayed games, they both live off the funds those games make, but only one actively charges a subscription for the game.

Online doesn't have bounties, and if you want to make money by selling to other players, be prepared to chip 10,000 bricks or dig 10,000 dirt every month.

Not really. The only substantial way to get enough silver to pay for prem involves paying Rolf or getting silver from someone who did. There was also draining traders, but that required either spending 50 silver on your own trader, or out-autisting all the autists camping the public trader.

How did the last hacked server and client handle the lack of an authenticated steamid as a password to a name? Surely there was some extra input added to the client?

not sure. when richfag posted the previous map's database i tried taking some of the passwords and logging in as other people but it didn't work, i'm no codefag so I don't know much about it

The password information contained in the sql files he released were salted hashes. The server doesn't get sent your actual password when you log in, it gets hashed by your client and sent to the server, then the server compares the hash you sent with the one it has stored from when you made your account or most recently changed your password. You can't use the hash itself as an actual password.

Where Test is the name of a DB folder, you'll have to create the DB folder with another version of the server since I ripped out all of the actual GUI so it runs headless.
Replace the natives with the windows natives to run it on wangblows.

explain what did you do? for what purpose did you do it?

Replace the SteamHandler class with a dummy one, most of the methods don't return anyway - one returns true if the player's authenticated, another an int, which I just set to return 2, since it's what the LoginHandler expects.
I removed the GUI stuff since javafx can't be used via X11 tunneling, so the main gui class really only runs startDB("name"), a static method in WurmServerGuiController.

I made changes when I was just figuring out how it worked, but as far as I know that's the only thing that needs to be done to make it work .
