There is no quick and easy way to deal with petrol running out. Absolutely nothing has the sort of return on investment that oil does. And it is far and away the most energy dense, easily transportable and easily scaleable to different engine sizes of energy types.

I know, I'm ag-user. I work with one of those to convert crop residues and biological waste to biochar, syngas, and biooils.

You only get certain hydrocarbon lengths out of the converter I work with though, whereas you can pull basically everything out of petrol. You could probably get some good stuff out of plastics because you are working with fairly long polymers, but I'm not sure if you can get the specific hydrocarbons required for jet fuel, for instance.

IMSR's will tide us over till the LFTR's come online in the 30s. ERoEI on ture LFTR's is supposed to be around 2,000. IMSR's will give as least as good as the early oil finds did; somewhere in the 200 range.

If it means we have to abandon jets in favour of older prop engines or airships then shit happens.

Those machines typically work by burning some of the syngas produced to power the rest of the operation, since there are difficulties in transporting gasses between locations. You are shortening your hydrocarbons and loosing some of the feedstock to power the operation so its not 100% perfect, and if you are using plant feedstocks then you are depleting soil organic matter content and general soil fertility by not returning the plant residue to the soil.

Switchgrass is a decent feedstock because the root mass of grasses is actually good for the soil, but you are still loosing nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, and sulfur from the soil when you harvest the plant for use as feedstock.

The good thing is that the co2 released by using bio-oils/syngas then goes back into the atmosphere for the plants to utilize, so that part is very sustainable.

The hydrocarbon ratio you get out of the pyrolysis plan is dependent not only on what you put in (in addition to the catalyst), but how high the energy is you're putting in. Take fast microwave pyrolysis for example: microwaves are able to concentrate energy much better than simply putting it over a fire, yielding more shorter chain (light) hydrocarbons. Longer chains would collect in the lower end of the distillation in the same manner modern oil refineries do.

This is the exact same process oil is produced under the earth (heat and pressure), but man made. You only need energy and an oxygen-less environment.

Another thing is just how disposable we make things these days due to economic motivations to do so.

With ICBs there's not an awful lot you can do. But the demand to make everything smaller makes it even harder to do that little.
