Tales Thread

What do you faggots think about Berseria and the direction the series is going?

I honestly have no clue what the story is about but it's fine as long as it's not Graces tier retarded. I assume most people play these games for the fun characters and combat anyway. Speaking of which I like the look of the cast both personality and gameplay wise. I'm glad they've gotten rid of linking or fusing. That shit made multiplayer much less fun because someone had to give up control if you were playing with more than 2 people. If not you don't have access to all your abilities.

I hope they get more creative with the music too like they did with Xillia 2 having some comfy jazz music for their town. Sakuraba has been making everything sound the same for too long. I just want some quality music, not just something that "feels" like Tales music.

Will it have a loli?

Doesn't every Tales of game?

Why is Zestiria so shit

I might sit out this one

any porn?

That outfit looks very problematic and also cold.

Where does one who has never played the series start? Is it true that symphonia is babby's first tales game?

I want to cum inside that girl's mouth.

Symphonia is the most popular tales game but in my opinion you would want to start with eternia (which is tales of destiny 2 in NA)

the beltan character is the least retarded looking
what hell have i just witnessed

is that a skirt made out of dictionaries

...

In my experiences, Eternia, Symphonia, and Vesperia make for good starting point. Symphonia got that monikor as "babby's first tales" due to being where many western fans start playing, due to the game actually getting marketing (Destiny and Eternia prior both sold poorly, and the PS1 already had a ton of JRPGs to compete with, compared to the relative few on the Gamecube).

Most main series Tales games are standalone so story-wise you can start anywhere and not miss much. That said, there are some related games: Symphonia and Phantasia (Symphonia being a far distant prequel), Destiny and Destiny 2 (direct sequel by a few decades), and Xillia and Xillia 2 (direct sequel by a year). I think I've heard that Berseria is going to be a prequel to Zestiria, maybe in the Symphonia-Phantasia way where you can play in any order without getting spoiled.

Let's not confuse him with the number. The US release used "Tales of Destiny II" and was on the Playstation, while "Tales of Destiny 2" was an actual sequel on the PS2 and is still not in English.

this series really went to shit when they started using motion capture.

Just noticed the mage is wearing a skirt made out of tomes. As retarded as that is, it's pretty original.

Anyway I think this gameplay video shows a good deal of nice stuff.

I believe that's a shota. So the loli will probably be some psycho enemy loli.

Not as party members in some of the games. Phantasia, Destiny, Destiny 2, and Legendia didn't have a loli on your team.

She looks more like a mixture of both Milla and Rutee. Or an older, edgy Rutee.

Phantasia PSX is a good place to start. It's a remake of the first game in the series. Eternia is also a good place to start. The combat evolves from those 2 games. Symphonia is just Eternia's combat on a 3D plane but with way more rough edges. Vesperia cleaned it up much more. Graces F and Hearts R both have some really intense combat compared to most of the games. But I wouldn't play those first for they have a different playstyle than the rest of the series.

Not cuter than mao, the ultimate shota from tales

I know rutee but at least rutee didnt have the annoying character that milla had, but I guess we will see how good velvet's character is based on the japanese reviews

Unless you count Rita, Vesperia didn't have any in the party (Karol instead being the youngest). I don't think Rebirth did either.

Phantasia (PS1 and on) has Suzu, who along with Elize is one of the youngest playable characters in the series.

True, it's certainly more fluid than the SFC original and has better translation options to boot (both compared to the SFC one AND the localized GBA and phone versions). But at the rate things are going, he might want to hold off until Tales of Phantasia X for the PSP is done being fan translated. Most fluid version of the game to date there.

So far, no. sadly
It seems that this six character roster will be the final playable roster. Maybe there will be a guest for some part, but I doubt it.

Probably gonna main Magilou. Demo comes out on the 4th in JP. Definitely going to try that one out.

I just figure that's what happens when you get stuck having to compose music for so much of a series, with similar themes/locations and all. Granted, I wouldn't say I dislike Sakuaraba, but it would be nice if they'd let Go Shiina do sole composition for a game or two again and let Sakuraba have a break to get some new ideas. Especially since Shiina's work on Tales of Legendia was a real highlight to the game, and Shiina usually is stuck doing remixes of Sakurbaba's stuff for the escort titles.

Havne't even touched the series since.. radiant mythology?

I've heard it's gone downhill since then.

Series started to go downhill after xillia, IMO. The last good tales was Vesperia or maybe Abyss, depending if you prefer gameplay, story or characters. But, while Graces at least was funny at times and had a awesome extra arc - that was added in the ps3 version or something - Xillia have shit. Horrible stories, characters, etc. Didn't had the guts to play Zestiria since heard was also very bad. And this is coming from someone that played pretty much all of them before vesperia, from Phantasia to vesperia. I only didn't played the ones that never left Nihongo - like rest of Radiant - and the cellphone ones. So I'm very familiar with the series and, since I like Vesperia for what it is, and being a "new" game compared to the first ones like Eternia -which means I can't be stupidly accused of being nostalgiafag - I can say; tales is becoming shitty. if you like Xillia, you must have bad taste….maybe even like FFXIII as well. How can anyone like that garbage? That's saying to the developers that it's ok, that's the kind of game that Tales need to be! As a fan of the franchise, I'm very sad to see it that way nowdays…I really hope Vesperia turn out to be good, but I dunno; if they let out that abortion know as xillian, how can i believe the current tales team still knows how to make good tales games?

this looks like generic of the generic gook rpg shit, horrible personality-free designs.

Go Shiina did a great job with Legendia. Then again this is a guy known for doing Ace Combat music so that's expected. I feel there are so many other composers they could bring along for a Tales game. I know Sakuraba can get creative with his music too. He has done a ton of music for the Souls series and only some of the tunes in Dark Souls 3 sounded like his usual works.

Then you missed out on Vesperia.

It's a Japanese game.

Yes it has lolis and shotas too if you prefer.

True, he can do well when he wants to, or is given the freedom to do something a bit out of the box. But he's had to compose for every main series Tales but Legendia and (I think) Innocence, and the similar locations have to wear on someone after a while as far as trying to compose a fitting theme that still is unique. I mean, he does fine with combat themes if you ask me (and in the case of Vesperia PS3 and Xillia 2, the newly added songs sound pretty damn good, probably since the bulk of the soundtracks had been done with the prior releases), but the scene and environment music seems somewhat lacking at times these days (the jazzy Elympios music was surprisingly good though).

Also, I suppose it has more to do with differences in audio output capabilities, but I miss some of the twangy elements the OSTs for the older games had. Just seems like there's a bit of a difference between the games before Abyss, and Abyss on.

One of my favorite Tales battle themes.

Abyss will be my all time favorite Tales game simply because of Luke fon Fabre.

I can't seem to remember what happened to him at the end, did he meet with everyone again?

Ultimately?
_Yes__
It was also ambiguous as to which one it was, i think most people just assumed they fusion-HA'd and call it a day

Demo is out the camera is still shit also expect Baba to return if ToB does poorly in Japan

Baba left?

Something like that. It's unclear if the one that returned was Luke, Asch, or some fusion of the two (the lyrics of the opening song hint at them becoming one again, if memory serves). I doubt Namco will bother to clarify so as to not piss off various shippers, but unless EndLuke is both and opts for a three-way relationship, either Tear or Natalia is going to be very sad if it turns out that it's not the one they loved that came back.

He's advisor for the Tales series because of Zesty scandal

Didnt know schizo-user liked Tales of Games.

Dont know much about it except that the PS3 version is jap only. Having a CFW PS3 had me giddy for it, no way in hell im buying a PS4 for it tho.

Guessing you'll be waiting for a potential script rip of the English translation to be patched in, or do you know moon?

Ah, so he got demoted over that?

Does he really have a thing for Rose's seiyuu, or was that just speculation?

Promoted actually and yes he was a huge Rosefag, but if Berseria does very bad in Japan sales he's coming back because Baba = sales

I enjoyed Symphonia on Gamecube back in the day, and recently tried Zestiria on PC but it had a retarded FPS cap so I refunded it. I would like to play another decent Tales game on PC or Nintendo.

I like the pics in OP's post, they look decent with some nice waifu material and a decent looking Sword Guy. Is Berseria coming to PC?

I think so. Though Tales on PC has been hit or miss to my knowledge, given how Zestiria was (I think) handled reasonably well, but the port of Symphony was pretty bad off in a number of ways (not sure if they've been fixed).

Also might be wrong but I think I heard about an FPS patch for either one or both of them.

Most likely not going to happen at this point (majority of Tales fans out in Japan seem to prefer sony releases, hence the plethora of extended ports and remakes on Sony systems for the ones that weren't native to it originally), and if it does, it probably won't come west. Only reason we got Abyss 3DS in the west was probably because Abyss had an existing full English translation already from the PS2 original (the US release actually had bug fixes and new content the original JP release didn't to my knowledge), and they could make extra sales off PAL Tales fans that never got to play it before since the PS2 one wasn't brought over there.

Wait, "Advisor" is higher than "Producer" out there, or was that one of those "promote them higher to where they aren't involved anymore" things that seem to happen every so often?

Promoted them to higher, he's just there so he doesn't fuck up Berseria but if Berseria does poorly they'll make him producer since the Xillia 1 and 2 did well when he was producer and everyone in Japan loves Destiny remake which he was producer.

Still a shame we didn't get Destiny remake out here. At least PCSX2 apparently has a decent debugger now though, so Absolute Zero's been making more progress than Cless ever did on it (though apparently the entire script is fucking huge).

Symphonia has received steady patches fixing most of the porting problems so it handles like it did on the PS3 more or less, whatever problems it still had on the PS3 though still prevail (like the 30 FPS thing). I know Zestiria has had a 60FPS fan patch forever and last I heard Symphonia was due to get one IIRC but I never followed up on it.

i got the symphonia pc port and its actually kind of alright

the jp voiced skits kind of makes up for the 30 fps cap
the 30 fps isnt nearly as bad as on an unmodded zestiria

i havent played gamecube symphonia since saddam was alive so it didnt really throw me off too much.

Threadly reminder that Graces is still the best.

I'm happy to hear that they're going with the CC system for Berseria. That said, I thought the same with Zestiria and was burned hard by all the unnecessary dogshit they added to bring the system down and make it utterly unfun.

At least there is no fusion/linking bullshit to ruin my couch-op this time. If there was a loli in the cast, I dare say I might be hype.

ah but i forgot to mention i also got TSfix for it so shrug

Looks like they've been focusing on the Phantasia remake for PSP rather than the Destiny remake recently.

I liked the direction the series took after graces with the gameplay. The gameplay now is so satisfying compared to how it was before.

However the story is getting kind of gay. Like graces was p horrible. And tales of hearts story was average…

They're really whoring the shit out of the costumes. Like what the fuck I need to spend 80$ total to get all the character costumes via dlc? The costume aspect is one of my favorite parts. It sucks because the costumes they offer via dlc area pretty cool and offer different battle music

I miss good stories and free costumes like there was with symphonia and vesperia. I recently replayed symphonia, and while the gameplay didn't age well the story certainly held fast.

Having to unlock basic gameplay/combat function 10 hours in was retarded and severely dampened my initial enjoyment of Zestiria, I sincerely hope they don't fuck that up again. And fuck paid costume DLC.

It's all about install base.

The wiiU is ofcourse dead and the PS4 is leading console this gen. Maybe if the new device that Nintendo is working on does a Wii Tales might go back to Nintendo but that's a long shot.

Tales has been a PlayStation series for a long time now.

Glad to see main girl's outfit is hot enough to not wanting to wait hours to get the swimsuits or other suits.
I just hope she's enjoyable edgy, not an annoying cunt like Lightning.

it will be shit, but at least it will be playable, in 60 fps

Damn, you guys sure do play the lamest garbage on the planet…

It makes sense. Phantasia was on the SNES, which had a lot of JRPGs. Then Destiny came out on the PS1, which also had a lot of JRPGs.

Opinions opinions.

Lamest garbage would be for me: online shooters (all of them), MMOs and indie games.

So basically most of the game industry ha ha.

I would like to see the Tales series succeed on as many systems as possible, I'm not a console warrior. It sucks to see a good game exclusive on a system I don't own. Or in a language I'm not fluent in….

They won't because of what happen with Vesperia Japan got really mad that Scamco made the definite version on PS3 after being tricked into buying the 360 they started breaking their discs and 360. Scamco has sworn that all Tales games will be on Playstaion

I haven't followed Beseria at all after I pirated Zestiria and dropped it before even making it 10 hours in, the writing alone made me feel like even more of a fucking child than the series usually does and the music I heard was such garbage I couldn't believe it. Xillia 2 was pretty good despite the fact that it reused so many assets that it was basically just their second try at making Xillia without a neutered battle system. My love for the series has been waning fast ever since Xillia though. I could forgive how garbage the story and overall writing of Graces were because the combat was phenominal, but Xillia was just an overall mistake that 2 managed to somewhat rectify. They haven't learned from Milla's lukewarm reception and are still trying to make their own Lightning, that much is apparent from looking at the protagonist. I can say the rest of the cast is looking better than anything we've seen in years though if only going off of their designs, hopefully they have personalities to match those designs. Still, if the music is garbage again then I doubt I'll be able to force myself through it. I don't have high hopes for the series.

Ah that's good then.

I had a 360 last gen and I loved it for the first half of the generation but Microsoft stopped caring about videogames besides Forza, COD, Gears and Halo.

Vesperia on the xbox was just a demo for the real game on the ps3.

Sadly know, currently working on my 4th language, once thats done I guess I'll learn japanese, just for vidya. I have no intention to work/live there knowing how fucking racist their society is.

As someone who owns a CFW PS3, I'm loving Vesperia to bits, I would recommend watching Tales of Vesperia: First Strike before playing it. Its a nice introduction to the characters and the animation and short story is surprisingly good

Plot and DLC has become the biggest bane to this series. But the gameplay is usually on point and these games are great with friends.

It's a bit of both, depending on what they feel like working on at a given time. Kingcom's been working on technical stuff for both every so often, so it really comes down more to what script Thoroughim feels like giving some more time to (Phantasia's being the one he's more familiar with). That said, to my knowledge they have already gotten the entire skit section done for Destiny DC, mainly as a test of a PCSX2 debugger, but again, the entire script itself is huge.

I think they estimated that Destiny DC might be done in maybe a year or two (I'd have to go back and check when that was stated though).

If you have a CFW PS3, Tales of Vesperia PS3 is as of now the only PS3 game with a complete English fan translation.

The gameplay carries that game so far. A shit ton of extra content, many side quests, fantastic difficulty system, all characters are fun to play and unique, great variety of bosses that also happen to be difficult, and the combat in general.

I really hope Besaria turns out well and it does look promising. Then again, so did Xillia 2 and it was decent.

I feel a bit relieved to know me and my bro weren't the only ones doing that. And yes, Graces is a magical Tales game that, despite a shitty story and crappy world, still remains the best. Simply because the gameplay was superb.

After watching the 25 minute segmented gameplay video that someone linked earlier, my expectations are a bit lower. My nipponese is pretty shit and I definitely can't follow what those nerds were saying in rapid gookspeak, but from what I could cobble together from both the text, video, and their words, I think there might be a hard limit on the number of artes you can use in a combo. Further internet-research also supported that.

Mechanics-wise, this was one a major gripe with Zestiria I had, so I'm not all that thrilled. I only hope I'm wrong, or that there will be a way to break past this so I can do the massive 999999999 hit combos, like Graces.

Honestly, the only songs in Graces that really struck me as feeling memorable this long after the fact were the remixes of White Wishes and "Rise to the Challenge"/"Decisive Battle! Cheer Up." And with the White Wishes mixes it's more due to how prevalent those were throughout the game.

I wonder what they'll do. In Hearts R and Xillia 2, enemies could break out of combos. In Xillia 2, you can sometimes counter it with a few characters but most characters would just have to super armor it, block, or backstep. In Hearts R, you were given the ability to counter it and doing so benefit you greatly. However getting hit by it really hurt. I wonder if they're going to do something like that.

Stun locking a boss through 7 mystic artes chains and getting 25 second eleth burst during post game was the shit. I still think Graces F has one of the best combat systems I've seen in a RPG.

The theme that plays when you fight Lambda Richard, Emeraude, and Fodra Queen stuck in my head for a while. Mainly because how many times they kicked my ass.

Also I found it stupid that Emeraude didn't join your team. Seems like she could have been a perfect character to fill the role Richard left behind when he went full edge. A battle mage that excels are dark magic and fast casting mid tier spells.

I for one liked Zesteria. Combat was fun, the whole item-skill system was exploitable as hell once you figured it out (and necessarily so if you wanted to beat the bonus dungeon on chaos). I know the whole alisha/rose thing set some people off but that's why you don't pay attention to pre-release hype like an idiot.

I can think of another memorable song from the game :^)

Seriously though, "What Appeared in Eternity's End" is a favorite of mine.

My nigga. Graces combat had its issues and hiccups, but there's nobody on the planet who would find it unfun.

Especially since all that good shit you said doesn't happen solely in the postgame. You can start doing it by the time you hit midgame, and boy oh boy is that hermhem delish.

I don't know, she always struck me as the sort of character that had been abusing the party's trust to get what she wanted (and low and behold, that's exactly what she did). What I found really dumb was how you spend an entire fight trying to purge King Dick, then the bitch absorbs Lambda and gets drunk on its power, but then Richard, having awoken again, reabsorbs Lambda after the battle with her anyhow, rendering that entire section a moot point aside from the party being back on Ephinea.

Reminds me when people used to do No Items, No Deaths, Hard Mode First Playthrough runs. The strategies they had to come up with and figuring out of the game worked really shows how much thought gets put into these games. Especially the tactics shit. You get so much control over the AI. Sure it doesn't replace humans but you can do some neat shit.

Graces F in general had a plot that could have been something great and instead went generic really quickly.

From here the story was actually looking very promising. I was expecting Asbel going from faction to faction, solving problems on each side and making his own mercenary group. He would see issues from each side and go out of his way to fix issues while trying to avoid all out war. Meanwhile he's trying to gain back the trust of others from his childhood by working with them. You can even fit Lambda into this as Richard can still become a corrupt king. The only thing I would imagine changing is Lambda being a B.O.W (not made on another planet) and Sophie was designed to counter it.

We all know how the story went afterwards…

Speaking of videos, neat Destiny DC Chaos Mode Rank 6 Arena Solo No items, no death, no damage video here.

And yeah, Graces certainly felt like it had potential in the story department early on, but overall it felt like it turned generic (or bad, depending on who you ask) in that department fast. It really did feel that everyone forgave him a bit too fast (Malik and Pascal ought to have been the only ones without something against him at the time the main arc starts, and in the case of the latter it's because she's not even in the childhood arc anyhow). I'm honestly left wondering if they had a guest script writer or something. I mean, Tales isn't exactly known for excellent stories, but usually they're pretty serviceable still for driving the game. Graces' story feels like a pretty low point.

Speaking of Richard, a friend I played Graces with thought it would have been a more interesting point if, rather than Lambda being involved at all, he became an unstable nutcase due to centuries of royal inbreeding combined with years of assassination attempts.

I think that would have been an interesting turn for Richard. You wouldn't need Lambda. If Sophie was actually trained by assassins to kill Richard maybe then she could fit in too. None of this giant eleth crystal draining bullshit.

Speaking of Graces F.
That was most likely not in the original but I did like the dub at times. I found some parts with Richard cringe worthy but overall it wasn't bad. I think they did a good job with the artes/battle one-liners, the skits, and the after battle quotes.

Shit I really want to play another Tales with a friend now. Tried playing through Xillia 2 with a friend but he moved away.

Most of the dub voices weren't bad at all if you ask me (Jamieson Price was excellent as usual, and Tales has generally gotten a lot better over the years as far as dub quality goes), but Richard and Asbel's voices seemed like they could have used better direction. I've heard Richard's English voice before as Chester Barklight in in the OVA miniseries for Phantasia and he seemed to do much better there, and with Asbel, admittedly I haven't heard all that much from Bryce Papenbrook aside from him (I do know that he voices kittytoe in SAO, which isn't something I'm real inclined to watch), but going off Graces' dub, he doesn't seem as good an English voice as his father Bob was (that guy did a REALLY good job with Rasputin in Shadow Hearts Covenant). Though again, maybe it was somewhat poor direction for him there.

I know what you mean, but at least I suppose you guys parted on good terms (if you're not still in contact). Two of my Tales friends tossed me under a bus some years back, and soured Vesperia 360 for me in the process). Thankfully I've managed to get another friend into the series, and we've since co-oped Eternia, Symphonia, Abyss, Vesperia, Graces f, and both Xillias.

Really just takes the right type of person, and I wouldn't even say they need to be heavily into JRPGs or anime, but simply have a tolerance for it. The co-op angle really adds another level to it, it's a shame that so few JRPGs allow for co-op anyhow. Mainly Tales, older Mana games, and some stand-alone ones like Eternal Sonata to my knowledge.

You're not alone, anons.
My bro and I also plow through Tales games in co-op and it's a blast. For Graces, I got it undubbed and with all the JP exclusive DLC added in to boot. I main Pascal/Sophie and he was Hubert. Instant Ballsan, Mecha Asbelan, Eleth Mixan, all of the 'ans combined for one hell of an experience.
We tried the Berseria demo yesterday and it does show promise - battles are quite hectic ala Graces and there's no linking bullshit like Zesty.

I was mad because of that, too. Besides, Emeraude actually has a menu portrait icon as a party guest, just like Cheria when she's unable to fight. The fact that Emeraude had this treatment in the menu made me think she'd join later, but nope.

Thankfully I have a friend now who enjoys playing co-op games and fighting games. Definitely playing this new game when it comes over here. Sadly Hearts R had no co-op capability.

You know maybe it was an idea to have her in the game but they ran out of time and had to gut her out. Making her just explode after you fight her. Not even the cunt of a duke got that treatment. You don't just throw a drill hair titty monster in front of me and expect me not to get upset when she doesn't join my team.

None of the handheld Tales allow for co-op anyhow, but all the console ones do, aside from Phantasia SFC and Legendia.

Might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Flynn did in Vesperia 360 as well, despite only being playable for one fight (and even then he doesn't play well there from what I hear); thankfully the PS3 version remedies that some, though it's a bit hard to have someone like him playable real often before the final dungeon since he has such a big role as an NPC. And then there's Ras in Eternia, who joins the party for a single dungeon, has his own status image and (admittedly small) arte set, and returns as the boss at Mt. Farlos. The next time you see him after that he sacrifices himself so aside from that one dungeon he's not even playable.

The point being that Graces f wasn't the first time, and that just because a character has a status image or portrait, or is technically in party, it doesn't mean they're actually going to be playable, or remain playable anyhow. Or appearing in skits, for that matter (Ion and Elle being a good examples of that, being story important NPCs that are technically in the party, but don't actively participate in combat; Ion does join in for an extension of Luke's Radiant Howl, performing Akashic Torment, but that's all he's able to do).

It's the current year, guys. As much as I hate to use this argument, I think it's actually fairly apt here.

You should not be surprised at all when a character doesn't join the party, despite all indications. I mean, really now. In todays gaming climate, we know the entire cast before the game is even released. There's no room for mystery.

Isn't it sad? You can be disappointed right off the bat that there's no loli in Berseria.

Yeah, but Flynn and Ras' cases in the menu had full HP displays and all that, so it's obvious they were at least guest characters.
Ion, Elle or any other accompanying NPC never had any sort of icon or slot in the party menus.
Emeraude on the other hand gets a slot in the menu bars, but only with a portrait and name - no HP bar, no CC. This happens in the same game with Cheria early on, and another instance of this happening is in Phantasia, where Arche initially appears as 'Rhea' and she has a slot in the party menu but no HP/MP/Lv or anything of the sort.
I did play Graces right after playing Phantasia, so perhaps that made me perceive Emeraude's case as similar. Maybe it was a last minute decision or just an attempt to mislead…

Yeah, you're quite right.
Don't remind me… At least Magilou is flat and is fairly fun to play as.

Yeah, I suppose maybe they ran low on time or couldn't quite figure out how to right her in as a villain, yet playable all the same (honestly, her personality and characterization didn't seem to leave there as being much for redemption or anything). And given she was working alone, there's no opportunity for a divergent section where you play as her and her allies (the way Lenny and Veronica are actually fully playable for a dungeon, along with their boss, in Shadow Hearts Covenant's JP only Director's Cut).

I think that misleading could have also been the intent, but if so they really didn't do it too subtly either (I mean, looking at past games, it was pretty clear that Raven was shady as fuck, but I didn't get the connection between him and Schwann until it was actually revealed).

I suppose it's been like that for quite a while now, but I have to say I do miss the sort of "bait and switch" trailers some games got in that, while maybe not lying about the gameplay or characters, deliberately fuck with your expectations to make the actual game more surprising. Shadow Hearts: Covenant had one like that in Japan (and with JP text/English audio for the trailer too; good quality English as well).

Yeah, I have no intention of playing the demo, but when I cast my gaze over the playable characters in order to find one favorable, she stuck out like a beacon to my lolicon heart. It's not quite a loli, but I can make do.

Now I just need to decide whether to play as Velvet or her. Velvet's got some scrumptious martial arts shit going for her, but she's an ughman tittymonster Milla clone. The decision is hard.

I might just have to shelve the debate until I can ascertain what my compatriots will be playing.

Why not? Just make a quick JP account and you can DL it.

Berseria's system allows for very fast (no slowdown like Xillia 1) switching in the middle of combos. It reminds me of Oneechanbara's in-combo-switching. You could main Magilou and switch to Velvet to gain back some SG and then switch back to Magilou or even combo it further with another character.

I prefer to fly blind. Makes things funner.

I suppose you can only switch to one of the two benched characters? I will be very distraught if they're allowing you to switch between anyone and everyone at any time.

The benched characters. Up and down on the dpad switches the characters, and left/right lets you choose who will be switched. All human players can input this, so your partner can decide to 'wrestle' the switch cursor from you in order to switch his/her character with another from the bench.
Unlike Xillia, it's not a free action. You need at least 1 'circle' next to the HP for a switch (the character that tags out needs the point). You gain these by doing several things, but mainly by using Break Soul with R2.
Also, 3 circles let you use a Lv.1 MA (or Lv.1 Blast Caliber in Graces terms).

There will probably be a Moon Selector in the game, though (change your currently controlled character with Start when the menu is open, Abyss and Vesperia have this).

That doesn't sound that bad. I was simply worried that it'd be another shitty new idea they thought of to fuck over co-op play. This sounds like it could be okay though.

Here's hoping, going into the future, that they finally shelve this link/fusion bullshit for good. This is a promising start.

I don't know about this one. I heavily dislike their recent ideas of integrating some new mechanic into regularly required play for every single character. Practically speaking, I imagine it'll just be lame to constantly be pressing R2 every single fight, in every other combo, just to keep up whatever they're calling this new circle thing.

It'd be one thing if it was just one characters thing, but to force it upon everyone makes it super uncool.

blog.talesofgame.com/en/berserias-battle-system-exclusive-info/ more details on how it works.

Instead of CC, you now have SG. What's the difference? Not much, really.
You start with 3 Souls capacity and can go up to five. 3 souls means a straight 3 arte combo. Sidesteps use up half.

Consumed SG becomes red, which refills when inactive. Now, if you have 3 or more SG, Break Soul is a special skill that varies effects according to the character, and can give you some emergency HP. It also raises the 'circle' bar with number used for switch/Blast Calibers.
Break Soul, as it name implies, consumes SG capacity by turning it gray. Gray parts won't refill, so you need to gain that SG capacity back. You can't use BS when capacity is only 2 or 1.

Break Soul allows you to make another full combo combining your previous one, so you could do a base 4 arte combo with 4 SG capacity, use Break Soul to sacrifice 1 unit and attack with a fifth attack, leaving you 3 SG for an additional 3 arte combo for a total of 8 attacks (4 base + BS attack + 3 additional).

Velvet's BS increases attack but uses up HP. Laphicet's reduces damage for everyone in range. Magilou's can absorb enemy spells (cancel their casting).

I'd say BS is the 'Fatal Strike' or the 'Field of Fonons' of Berseria - it's the one 'special' thing that makes it different to the other LMBS variants - each Tales has its own quirk on those.
SG is equivalent to Zesty SC, Destiny/Graces CC or Xillia AC, so it's not exactly new. It is a graphical set of icons in the battle screen instead of a number, though.

Oh, and I don't think you can really spam BS. If you had full 5 SG that means 3 uses, but you'd cripple yourself to remain on a mere 2 SG capacity, heavily fucking up your combo ability.
It's more of a emergency type skill (especially Laphicet's and Magilou's since they're defensive) that has a cost to use but adds other benefits.

From what I played in the demo, battles are absolutely chaotic like Graces, and I like that.

Thankfully there is no more fusion/link bullshit. The switching is pretty much instant and it can keep your combos up - and it's also just a tool with a cost for its use, no spamming like in Xillia 1.
This time, 4-player co-op play is finally 'normal' again.

>Break Soul allows you to make another full combo combining your previous one

Yes. This is exactly what I was talking about. I hate it. I hate having every single characters moveset tied into a mechanic like this, especially when there is, ultimately, still a hard limit on what you can do. It's just like in Zestiria, with the BG(?) or something, where you had to balance between using it as a combo extender or for whatever else, like that gay fusion shit.

I'd be okay with a shitty system like this tied into a single character as their gimmick, but I really dislike it when every character is gimped by it. I just want a game where the only thing holding my sicknasty infinite combos back is pure mechanical skill, timing, and management of resources. Not some arbitrary "lmao no u cant attack now cuz i said so" hardcoded into the game.

Even aside from that personal distaste, I think it'll cheapen these allegedly cool and unique supermoves every character has when you're using them nonstop every other battle just to go past the 4 combo limit.

It's basically CC, just like Graces - 'the holy grail of insane combos and crazy combat'.
Although CC can go up to the mid 20s, this one does have a hard limit just like Zesty's SC.
I suppose later on in the game the rate of consumption and recovery of SG improves and better combos can be achieved.

If you could just combo everything infinitely you'd have a one trick game winner. You could do spell-cancel infinite combos in GCN Symphonia - broken? Yes. Boring? Of course.

It may sound complex and offputting at first, but when the game comes out you should try it regardless (or try the demo) to get a feel for it.
I still prefer CC Graces, although Berseria has one big interesting change that I like: Free run is the default movement.

What made the combos so long in Graces F was also due to stun locking if you hit weaknesses while having high accuracy. It also helped that you regained CC, or increased your max CC by dodging and guarding was also a means to be more offensive due to the guard aura mechanics. So it became like a dance between playing aggressive and dodging to gain a better offensive style.

Also in this game not every one of the Break Souls is an offensive thing. Like the mage has it so you absorb enemies spells and send it back if you collect enough.

Not videogames.

What part of hard combo limits don't you understand?

There are no 'better combos.' As far as we know at this point in time, you get 8 artes, period. There is nothing further because the game itself shuts you down at that point. I've seen no information that supports the idea that you can Break Soul again at that point to reset the combo, allowing for a 12(+) arte chain.

I hope I'm wrong. I hope that Break Soul can be repeated at the end of every 4th arte so you can theoretically chain infinitely. I hope soul management will gradually become easier as you level, and you can begin the fuck-long combos. But I aint seeing anything supporting that hope.

It's really looking like you get a whopping 8 artes maximum. And that's turbolame.

It should be possible to use it as long as SG is 3 or higher. I'll check.

Zesty was the worst combat in any Tales game.
Not only did you use mystic arts every damn fight, they just did no damage.
The entire game was "no one does any damage, better match up those elemental weaknesses, also it's really hard to actually game over because of character hot-swapping"
Not to mention the hardcoded combo limit was much worse than it was in graces.

Also while infinites were boring, I wasn't forced to do infinites, but could if I wanted. Infinite combos were also sub-par dps wise and were only good for chainstunning.
Zesteria on the other hand, makes you do subpar dps on all your moves while locking you to babies first "mash the button harder".
Like look at Vesperia, limit break let you do whatever you wanted, the combo chains were actually there as opposed to "well here's the slots you have, certain things go into certain slots"

also
in what fucking way does "you have 8 moves, they even are forced into certain slots" sound complicated.

Alright, they can stack. Started an Advantage'd battle with 4 SG capacity and quickly gained 5 ,then attacked, BS, more attacks, BS again and used a spell to finish it off.

There's 16 slots. Four face buttons with four tiers each make 16 slots. And unlike Graces A-trees, they're all interchangeable.
You can put a high level spell in tier 1, but it will cast sloooooooowly and it will eat up way more SG.

Zestiria was a mess not just because of how the SC system worked, but because of all the link bullshit. If you didn't armatize there were enemies that were sponges and you'd be fighting all night.

For the time being, I'd place Berseria's LMBS way over Zesty's meh LMBS. Graces is still leagues above both.

Alright, great. That's what I'm talking about. I'm still not a big fan, but there's at least some options. I'll reserve further judgment till it actually comes out.

Also, here's how SG works in higher detail:
Not sure on how many SG is one 'diamond', but it's probably 10, since artes eat about 4~8 per use and it appears to be either a third to half diamond per arte.

The maximum capacity dictates how far you can go in the tree. If you have the default three diamonds you can go up to tier 3. If you do three artes you'll probably still have a good amount of soul left, but you can't go over to your fourth tier yet.
If you have 2 available stock diamonds (est. 20 soul) and have another two 'red' diamonds as in consumed soul, you can still go to tier 4 as long as those ~20 soul allow you to cast the 4th level arte.

Therefore, if you do combos with these different situations you'd have:
3 SG capacity (minimum allowed for a BS) -> 3 arte base combo + 1st BS (2 cap left) + 2 additional artes in prolonged combo. Total hits: 6
4 SG capacity -> 4 arte base combo + 1st BS (3 cap left) + 3 artes prolonged + 2nd BS + 2 more artes. Total hits: 11 (4+1+3+1+2)

Depending on how your attacks connect and stack up (also skills and equip effects, etc) you can regain Soul and soul capacity as you keep hitting, so you can keep Breaking and continue on.

Yes. I understood that from your previous post on the matter.

Do you happen to know if each artes tells you, explicitly, how much 'soul' it uses? or how much a diamond 'holds' as it were?

I mean, I'm sure the game tells you. There's no way it would just keep those things hidden and force you to guesstimate. Is your moon high-level enough to read those things?

My older brother gifted me both Xillias, and thus I've begun with the first one, while only having played Phantasia and Eternia thus far. It's mindblowing.

That being said, I remembered both Phantasia and Eternia having easy-to-miss things (quests, rare items) if you're going a bit fast, is it the same for Xillia or not ? Also, any suggestions ?

Thanks in advance.

Only kana and very basic kanji. I'm think it's 10 by estimating how much SG artes use and their number in the menu.

The details are probably in the help section of the menu but it's all moonrunes.

And yes, in the artes menu it explicitly shows how much it consumes, as in "SG 5" or "SG 9". Pic related.

Xillia's quests are dead easy to find since quest givers have an icon on their heads that indicate that they can give you a quest. There are hidden things, however - such as the 46 mysterious orbs for example.

No, not really. Any actually valuable 'rare items' that you'd receive from a quest-chain have been phased out in favor of making them just DLC. No matter what you do in game, you're never getting costumes or the god-sword of the ultimatum. Any other items that you'd consider valuable can be found in abundance via regular play, like All divides etc etc.

Accessories for dress-up purposes can be found here and there, but you don't explicitly have to go out of your way for them. Just play prudently, searching every nook and cranny, like you already should be.

Play a Tales game that isn't shit :^)

Symphonia and Abyss were pretty heavy on costumes. Then as Bamco found how much they could milk consumers with DLC, they started taking content out the games. Thankfully it's nothing that would actually break the game besides EXP DLC which is pointless anyway since these games are Action RPGs. Where skill can replace stats.

Depends on the game. For instance, in Xillia 2, there was some DLC which included ultra super high level lillium(?) orbs, or whatever that crap was called. Simply by buying it and equipping said orb, you would be learning all skills possible simultaneously, at a rate far beyond what is intended through normal play. I'd say that is fairly game-breaking.

Actually, about those costumes. That's another reason Graces was superior to all. They had a good selection of costumes you could unlock in-game, with no purchases necessary. As expected of the best game.

Reminder
You're not a real Tales of fan until youve played this masterful abomination. Where do I even start with this exquisite gem?
Now take everything I said and put it in the trash because its the absolute opposite

Forgot pic fug

this game almost made me want to get a Wii and I'm glad I didn't.

There were some cool costumes indeed, but a bunch of them were left in Japan. If you have CFW you can get all of it, though.
Xillia onwards have the advantage on attachments, however. There's a lot of them and you can edit colors, sizes, positions and all that. Way better than Graces/Vesperia fixed position attachments.
Still, it's pretty damn ugly how from Xillia onwards pretty much 99.9% of costumes became fucking DLC.

Now that's debatable. I feel like those things are the devs way of throwing a bone to the guys who are pissed that all the costumes are now DLC. Certainly, they add a bit to the game, but I just can't be all that enthused when this inferior shit all but replaces costume dress-up for the players who aren't DLC shit-eaters.

This only applies if you're one of those retards who don't have a CFW PS3 though.

Pretty much that. Thanks to CFW I can tell Bamco to go shove their DLC up the ass and also undub the games at the same time, but with Berseria being PS4 only in the West things are not the same.

There's dual audio and the JP opening song confirmed for the Western release already, so I think I can live with that. Magilou's book dress is cool enough. Velvet's default is meh as fuck

Aside from Milla's default, the Xillia default clothes were cool, though. Also, glasses for everybody!

Actually Dawn of the new world is one of my favourites.

Problem with the old games is that they didn't have dual audio yet.

I could never play a Tales game in English anymore.

Bamco finally learned and now the standard is dual audio, it seems. Also, voiced skits!

Symph.1&2 are covered via Chronicles, but in the case of Eternia, Abyss, Legendia and the Xillia games you'll have to mod them.

Abyss' PS2 undub restores skit voices, by the way. The GCN Symphonia one does not.

If it's not it fucking sounds like it

Haven't given Zestiria a go, but I'm not sure combat can be as bad/backwards as it was in Legendia.

Xillia has a handful of missables, but there's a substory log to keep track of things. Also, I do hope you're starting with Jude's side, as his exclusive scenes are more story relevant than the ones exclusive to Milla (which tend to be more on worldbuilding).

Symphonia wasn't real costume heavy, being the first game they truly made an appearance in (barring Eternia's cold weather clothes). Abyss and Vesperia though had a ton, and even with the PS3 version of the latter, while there was a good amount as DLC, they added even more directly ingame ones as well.

How?

My first tales game was tales of zestiria, i've put about 2 hours into it (i'm at the bit where you kill the vampire guy after the girl you find in the ruins leaves the village)
It's been ok so far but it hasn't drawn me in.
Is it worth to keep playing?

I'd say yes, since Berseria has connections. But I heavily recommend you to play older games first, since their mechanics are usually more dated and there are better entry points in the series.

If you have a friend to play with, definitely play on co-op. It's extremely fun.

What a blunder.

Its too late, just kill yourself to avoid any further damage

Why?

Mind explaining in detail? I've heard these 2 were bad but only in small terms. I'm never going to play them but I like details.

I can talk a bit about the MC since that's all I remember about that game.
Dawn of the new world is the sequel of Symphonia's story and tries to deal with the aftermath of merging the two worlds together. The main character is Emil, he's basically a massive pussy. He makes a deal with the lord of monsters to protect the female main. When he fuses with the monster lord during fights he becomes confident and cool and such.

I can't stand this shit. I can understand not wanting to kill or hurt others but learning to fight hardens you in some way. And as much as he fights, he shouldn't be a complete coward.

I strongly recommend killing yourself.

Alright

The original Symphonia cast (ie - Lloyd, Genis etc) is level capped during every stage of the game. When you first meet one they'll have a certain level, ie - 25. No matter how much XP you get with your characters and captured monsters, none of that goes to them. At the end-game, they're capped to level 50 while you're easily in the 60s and 70s.

Emil is a terrible MC. Throughout the series he does nothing but whine and cry about everything. He's also half-demon because fuck it. There's nothing interesting about him and he has 0 character development.

The game has a good, bad and neutral ending. Depends on how you fight the last two bosses. However, if you end up in the bad ending or neutral ending the game doesn't end, you just end up doing the last boss over and over till you get the good ending.

Girl much like Emil is pretty much 1D. She loves Emil for no reason whatsoever and the romantic relationship is really fucking forced.

Vid related, this is repeated easily 100 times

On the same note as the video, its absolutely terrible.

Remember how in Abyss one can use circles of elemental attacks to change ones artes? This one simply has an elemental grid to capture monsters and change Unison Attacks for no reason.

While at first I thought capturing monsters was kind of cool, they are shit. I'd rather have a cast of characters rather than monsters which I can't control in combat. Likewise, there's a colisseum (like Symphonia) and one can have monsters fight. However, the AI is shit, some combat taking 30 minutes to finish.

Yup, its all menu based.

Lloyd kills your family and whole of Palmacosta. You want revenge, turns out Lloyd was a fake dude/demon. Now you go do the whole dungeons and summons thing because reasons. Turns out Emil (MC) is also a half-demon Ratatosk something something end of the world.

Combat is stiff, unresponsive, its somehow worse than Symphonia where just copying the combat would've done.

forgot vid

I came here to say Arche is best girl.

That is all.

I'm really glad they're releasing these games to PC now so I won't have to regret wasting money.

I'd like to point out that they only managed to get one or two of the original voice actors for the original cast. I think Raine's new voice actor is okay, but for everyone else it was a big step down and terribly jarring.

What the fuck is wrong with you?

Chronicles adds dual audio helping on that front, but I gotta admit that English Tenebrae utterly stomps over every other character even in the original JP audio.
He was fucking hilarious.

I tolerated it since the tales series was relatively new to me at the time. If you were to ask me to play it now, I would refuse and call you a faggot. Abyss, I just couldn't get into at all. I heard the game gets a lot more interesting down the line, but I didn't have the patience.

Luke in Abyss acts like a hotshot and an asshole in the first part of Abyss and through his own actions pays a heavy price for it once shit gets real and he kills an entire town and finds out he's just a copy.

Now that I think about it, you have a point with Abyss. Luke is a strong contender for worst Tales protag. He starts out obnoxious and snobby (and not in an endearing way you can learn to enjoy) and after he becomes whiney and mopey.
Not to mention that he has the worst outfit design of any Tales protag.

Luke is great. Eat shit. Even when he was a whiny little shit in the beginning of the game, he was superb. He's far and beyond one of the better protagonist and characters that the Tales devs have put out.

I agree his outfit is pretty gay, but it'd be 100% cool if his undershirt was a real shirt that tucked into his pants. Just that simple addition would fix his character design.

Now you are just lying

You sound like you did not even finish the game.

Considering that most people don't have the courage to improve themselves or their lives, this is pretty useful advice.

Your rant clearly shows that you did not finish the game.

Its been maybe a decade since I finished it. Emil fights Ratatosk or someshit to stop demons from invading. He ends up with Martha or atleast its heavily implied

Pray tell how did he advance as a character?

Tip top kek faggot. Just because you have the mental age of a child and eat all that shonen "power of friendship" shit with a spoon doesnt make it good.

The way I saw Luke's outfit was that, being rather childish and spoiled, he probably thought it looked cool and his parents bought him it anyhow since they coddle him. I suppose Guy didn't want to say anything much either (be it due to not wanting to insult his friend, or that it might risk hampering his own plans if he does something that gets him tossed out of the manor).

If anything Reid has one of the worst designs (pajama bottoms and a manbra), but Eternia's self aware enough of that fact that every so often an NPC will shit on his sense of fashion, much to his annoyance.

I really liked Abyss and Luke (well, not so much Luke himself but rather what was done with him, and the comparison with him being a dynamic character than can learn and better themselves while Asch wallows in his hatred and stagnates is interesting), but he is the sort of character that people are extremely prone to hating, and even if someone likes what an asshole he is early on, the change into being depressed and mopey (admittedly he has some decent reason for being that way) is enough to get some people to hate him even then. I do like how towards the end he found a purpose and became confident, particularly during that confrontation with Asch in the final dungeon.
>"I don't even have a past to lose, but I've still decided that I'm 'me.' It doesn't matter what you think. Here I am! If that's the source of the strength you speak of, then I won't lose!"
Even Asch gives him some respect for actually standing up for himself there.

Yes indeed. Everything you spoke of is why Luke is actually great. He's, for better or worse, a fairly 3 dimensional character. Not only that, but it was all accomplished with pretty decent writing. Not one aspect of his character is ever really out of place, or randomly introduced. His character flows well from point A to B and so on within the confines of the narrative.

For the Tales series, writing like that is pretty rare. Which is all the more astounding when you realize a large portion of Abyss is written in that manner; not just the characters.

Abyss is actually pretty damn great and I want more like it. It's a shame that it gets overlooked because the whiny turbobabbies who want muh friendship for the nth time pass it over because of the asshole party.

Abyss is my personal favorite title in general. Great soundtrack, excellent OP theme, a very different type of character interactions in comparison to the typical 'band of friends who are all in the same page and want to save the world' schtick, fun as shit battle system … also Anise a best

Yes, the party is comprised of assholes. Flawed and weak at points, but resolute when the time comes. Their interactions as the game move on are quite interesting and develop in a believable matter.

I mean, who didn't want to punch Luke in the face when he was going on his 'I'm the ambassador' power trip at Deo Pass? He was one big fucking asshat at that point. At the end of that part the party fights Legretta, and we see Jade get really mad for the first time - something not seen before due to his troll attitude.
But in the second act we have the events over at the tower of Rem. When Luke decides to hyperresonate and kill himself the whole party's reactions in that part are notable. Also, when Tear is about to step in, she gets stopped physically by GUY of all people, even though he would normally be spazzing at contact with women. That part was pretty damn tough.

And through it all Luke found who his true friend really was

Honestly, I really enjoyed how all he main characters in Abyss, both the protagonists and the villains, had their own failings as characters (and the villains actually getting decent characterization and having their own personal reasons for why they'd follow Van even to their deaths), with the party at the very least acknowledging and at least beginning to work past their own (some of which are more deeply rooted than others, such as Jade's sociopathy being something that can't quite be resolved in the time the game takes, being something he's had since childhood). However, it is these same character flaws that ultimately make the game really hit or miss, since the cast is initially very different from the usual way JRPG casts are, and unfortunately some people are so turned off by it they refuse to give the game more than an hour or two of an attempt before deeming it bad.

And even some of the more minor NPCs seem to be handled reasonably well. Like Peony being a pretty savvy leader that doesn't see why his kingdom should have to have a lot of people die in a seemingly pointless war just because the score says so (and thus sends Jade out to discuss/investigate things with Ion), or even Noelle, who acknowledges she'd be useless in combat, but is nonetheless willing to fly the Albiore II into dangerous territory/situations if it helps.

It's not my favorite game in the series, and definitely has it's flaws (some technical issues and pacing, mainly), but I still love it a lot. Was surprised that the friend I'd played it with liked it just as much as I did as well.

I beg to differ. She could have been handled a LOT better.

Also, I might be wrong, but I think Guy at that point had begun to get over his gynophobia (I can't remember if it was before or after he saved Anise from falling off a cliff), or he did take a bit of Tear telling him early on "then don't think of me as a woman" to heart. Either way, when push comes to shove, he'll act despite his fear if the need is absolute.

That's true, but I'd still take games like this that provoke a polarizing reaction any day of the week, forever and ever. For better or worse, they're interesting, and nobody can deny the amount of effort and writing prowess put into it (except those same fags who drop it in 1 hour.)

It's a hell of a lot better than by-the-books diarrhea drizzled out of the dev's asshole, like Zestiria.

Abyss is just overall good shit, and I need to finish it. My bro got busy and we could no longer meet to play. I might have to finish is solo, cause I'm sure as shit not quitting 50+ hours in.

Yeah, I really don't mind it if someone plays through the whole game, or at least most of it, and still dislikes it, since they put in the effort and can say exactly why. The people that drop it after an hour or so, and then tell everyone that ever brings it up how shit they feel it is, are the ones I have an issue with.

A thought: copy your save file and then use one of them as a solo file and another for when/if he does get around to hanging out again.

Yeah, sounds pretty good. I'm just worried that I'll have to restart. My memory isn't the most amazing, and I might miss some subtle character and plot nuances. It's been over a year, after all.

I'm fairly tempted to just give it up and watch the anime instead. I've heard it's pretty good and manages to convey all the important plot bits.

How? I got thirty-some hours in (the last thing I remember was crossing the swamp with the Behemoth) and decided I couldn't stomach it. The lore would be interesting if they spent more than two minutes at a time on any of it despite the entire world revolving around it. The only decent characters are Luke, Jade, Tear, and Guy, and even then I didn't care about any of them. They reveal one interesting trait and then it's immediately buried under in-fighting and monotone dialogue. The interplay between Luke and Asch, Guy's backstory just gets glossed over with "It's OK Luke we're still friends," Jade's backstory, and Tear's family. All of them feel totally wasted.

Natalia and Anise are both blights that are everything I loath about female tropes. The battle system is gimmicky and boring, too. I would have preferred they just remove FoF altogether.

Oh, and also, I'm finding it a bit hard to really think of a lot of JRPGs that have outright assholish protagonists anyhow (at least, ones where that's their actual characterization and not the player being given the freedom to play them as an asshole). The main ones that come readily to mind being Luke fon Fabre and Yuri Volte Hyuga, but even then the reception is pretty different between the two, with Yuri generally still being well liked (I'm not complaining myself, he's a really enjoyable protagonist in his series) while Tales fans are heavily divided on Luke and Abyss on the whole.

I suppose most developers (or publishers, if they're the ones making the calls) don't feel like having the main character in games like these feel divisive, and thus most JRPG protagionists (or even parties overall) tend to be on the nicer, everyone-generally-gets-along end of the spectrum. Granted, I don't mind that if the characters are still interesting enough, but when there's a cast where the protagonist or party handle differently, it can be really refreshing.

I've heard the anime is indeed decent, but you still can't pack a 60-80 hour game into a 26 episode anime without having to cut out some stuff (even if you remove the grind of ingame battles). And to my knowledge, there's some minor elements to the game's lore/story that are left out of the anime due to time constraints and can leave some notable questions in the viewer's mind as to why some stuff happens.

I won't speak to anything else you said, since as far as I remember they're all decent critiques, but fuck you're gay for this bit.

No one seems to remember Symphonic 2 for the Wii. How did Holla Forums feel about it?

I more had a problem with the combat over everything else. It felt clunky.

for me, Hubert's probably my most used character because Asbel in my hands has more trouble stunlocking fuckers then Mr. Instant Balls, and Hubert's far better at zoning dudes in a game where moving around to dodge is far more important then actually taking hits, because you're supposed to NOT GET HIT considering everyone's made of fuckin' glass.

The universal consensus is that it was garbage.

Yeah man. I mean, I'm not gay.

Tear is three times the woman Anise and Natalia are combined. The only sensible choice out of the available waifus.

You disgust me. Your very existence offends me.

People don't like to remember Symphonia 2. If you ask me, it comes off as an attempt to ride the coattails of the originals popularity, and various elements in it seem to have been done with the intent of annoying/angering fans of the first Symphonia (things like all the party members being uncustomizable guest characters, leaving the main party and Emil, Marta, and monsters to fill the empty slots). In contrast, while still somewhat hit or miss, Xillia 2 went out of its way a LOT to not be another Symphonia 2.

Guy had initially hated Luke and anyone connected to the Fabres, but had mellowed out some over the years and grew to care actually about Luke, rather than just doing so as part of the charade he was putting up as he planned to eventually kill them all.

In single player, maybe. But in co-op, the FoF system becomes a lot of time as you and friends try to time FoF changes to make the best use of fields, since you have a duration of time after it's first used where a single field can yield multiple changes.

I'm on 3DS.

That would mean you're not timing your dodges well. Actually with what you said there were probably a few things your were doing wrong.

Your Asbel was wasn't stunning much because you didn't build accuracy increasing gear. You're not supposed to avoid the enemy that much. You're supposed to constantly be in their face dodging to increase CC, regen health, and gain eleth. You only need to back off with characters like Malik or Cheria because they don't have many attacks that come out fast.

Hubert isn't a zoning character. That would be Malik and Cheria. He just has a tool for many situations and builds well off momentum more than any other character besides Pascal who can deal insane damage with enough CC. You stun or crowd control with guns and go in with dual blades. When he has enough CC he can pull off his high damage dual blade combos. If you were zoning with guns, then you weren't dodging enough to gain a ton of CC to use his blades.

Whoops, meant "a lot of fun."

There you go. The PS2 version has it's own issues with stuff like overworld loading and camera lag, but it also allows for co-op, which in my opinion makes up for it a good bit. Of course, whether that's of benefit depends on if you even have some friends that like or at least tolerate JRPGs and anime to co-op the games with, and if you live in a PAL area, I can't blame you for getting the 3DS one since Namco never bothered to give you guys Abyss on the PS2 (I'm pretty sure Symphonia was the first they released there, followed by Vesperia, but I might be wrong).

The biggest problem was that they tried to make her a part of the main plot by making her the traitor at the last minute. Was there any reason that the last battle with her and generic pink hair moeblob loli needed to be part of the main storyline? Why couldn't we have fought her at that island place that was supposed to her base that Van left her to rot instead of visiting the first dungeon again?

Anise maybe a bitch, but at least she's interesting and can be funny. Arietta just whines.

My big gripe was that she had PLENTY of time to at least clue Jade or Ion in as to what was going on with her family, and I'm sure either of them (or even Peony) could have kept them out of harms way, negating the fallout of that.

That, and she gets next to no comeuppance from the party for her actions (though I suppose depending on who you ask, the loss of Ion might be punishment enough).

Want to know something funny about Arietta? She's apparently supposed to be sixteen. Maybe living with wildlife for years stunts you growth, but she's three years older than Anise.

Oh god, Arietta has the distinction of being in my list of lolis I hate. And it's a very barren list, at that.

Her boss fight on the top of Choral Castle is a pain in the ass.

I always thought the whole 'parents are in danger since Mohs' was a bit exaggerated since at the very least we know her parents can freely roam Daath, but then again we don't know what kinda tricks Mohs had up his sleeve. Since everything in Abyss runs on fonon shit, maybe they had fonon sensors that would kill them if they wandered too far off from Daath? I dunno…

That's another nice thing from Abyss - its world building is very well done and it tries to explain common RPG quirks in a fonic way.
Example:
Spellcasters have the fonic frequency of their allies noted down, so they cast in a way so that the frequencies between them cancel each other out leaving them unharmed. This also explains why Jade can't just use OP spells when in a place full of people such as the city: There's a whole bunch of people and he doesn't have their frequencies marked down and there's no time to fine-tune things, so they will get hurt by spells.

Indeed. And it also provides a lore explanation for why the two out of party members can't just hop into battle.

Another interesting tidbit is the contamination sidequest, which explains how the fuck does Jade hide a spear on his forearm, and also explains other mechanics. This quest has several parts and the activation windows are fucking annoying… Next ng+ that I play, I'll use a sidequest reference guide to make sure I don't lose it again.

My issue was that there didn't really need to be a traitor subplot altogether. It felt like the only reason it was there was because it was a Tales tradition. Anise could've been like Regal, Karol, Leia, etc. They don't exactly have a huge role in the plot, but still have their own development and offer a bit of a view of what other people in the world who aren't directly involved in the main conflict go through.

Tales of Cyllya (or however its spelled) has a nice sidequest guide that keeps spoilers to a minimum.

True. If anything, it seemed like Guy should have been the traitor given his past, but he'd since mellowed out about it, and had they not written Anise the way they did, there wouldn't have been any sort of betrayal in the game for once. And then in and of itself can be refreshing, especially if the game toys with you to expect it, and but then it doesn't happen. Reminds me of how throughout Vesperia I expected Repede to probably die at one point in the old "dog gives life for master" sort of theme, but it never did happen, happily enough.

Yeah, that's the one I got. In my last game I started using it after I missed several quests already…

Vesperia was a breath of fresh air for me in some aspects. We still got another 'power of love and friendship' style going on, but everything got way more interesting once Yuri simply took care of Ragou in a cutscene. No stupid antics or hours of gameplay to fight him, just going directly to the point. Then came Cumore… gotta admit that's one ugly way to go. No wonder Yuri is banned from popularity polls since he always wins
Having a CFW PS3 is definitely worth it. Patty best girl

Both Yuri AND Leon got banned from popularity polls for always taking first or second place since Japan loves the shit out of both of them. And technically, Leon can still compete in some form due to Judas.

I wish I had a CFW PS3, but my model was a 160 GB made too late to have 3.55 Factory Firmware. I have played the PS3 version though after beating the 360 one just to see what changed (this was before the fan translation was finished either), and it was still a lot of fun. A good amount of elements actually made the game fairly import friendly (having the world map, item book, and monster book sync up was particularly nice, and I'm not sure why they didn't do that in Graces).

You got a CECH30xx slim? If so, yeah you're fucked.
But if you got a CECH25xx, you might still have a chance. Depends on the datecode. Use 'minverchk' to see which is the minimum version your PS3 can use. If it's 3.55 or lower you can downgrade.
CECH20xx and CECH21xx slims are all good.

I've already looked into it before, it was one of the later 160 GB slims. Might try to get a cheap model from before then sometime.

Well you clearly don't remember much about what happened since Emil is Ratatosk and he obviously didn't fight himself. Also it was more than just implied.

There would be more of a point in answering this question if it wasn't obvious that you don't remember anything about Emil's or Martha. But to answer your question: there was a large focus on them and their relationship. They had fights, they broke up, they saw each other in a new light and so on.

First: that has nothing to do with the power of friendship.
Second: You definitely need some courage to give yourself an honest look so that you can improve yourself.

Also:
Bitching about how the three endings are not distinct enough when the other Tales games only have one ending.

noun
1.
the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery.
2.
Obsolete. the heart as the source of emotion.

What you're thinking of is motivation. Lacking the courage to face a problem that could improve your life if you faced it isn't the same thing as having the motivation to improve yourself. Especially when most self improvement problems have nothing to do with courage.

Tales games are very much based in anime. If you don't like that you should play something else.

Motivation is important too, but if you don't have the courage to look at yourself honestly then your improvement is going to be limited.
I have seen too many people who don't have the courage to face the truth about either themselves and/or their circumstances and therefore can't improve themselves.

You do understand not everything must be taken literally right?

Except that you do when you fight yourself as the final boss you nigger cunt.

This is not character development, its a cheap ass way to endear one to the characters. Hollywood loves to do this kind of shit. For example

Nigger please, that game barely has one ending to begin with. Whats the point in giving you 3 endings when the game forces you back so you can get the good one?

Wut? How has this become a therapist session? Just because its cheesy doesn't make it good advice, even then the advice is completely irrelevant. I don't play games to learn the fucking moral of the story like the Tortoise and the Hare.

Here's the thing, I enjoy anime (Berserk, One Piece, Gintama, Durarara etc) and I enjoy Tales of Games (Vesperia, Symphonia, Abyss etc). However, Symphonia 2 is not a good Tales game, and its not a good anime either.

The final boss is not yourself, you fucking retard. In no part of the game do you fight yourself.
Except if you knew what the fuck you where talking about you would know that there was a lot of character development during those scenes.
Bitching about how the game is giving you a little bit extra when the other games don't give you anything extra.
First you bitch about the advice not being good, now you bitch about there being advice in the first place. You are obviously just bitching just to justify your opinion.

You get so many things wrong, I am not sure if you lied about playing it or have alzheimers. Either way you just sound ridiculous because you don't know what happened in the game yet are complaining about what happens in the game.

Its after fighting Martha and Lloyd you delusion cockmongler. About the 4 minute mark or so. Its sounds like you're the one that hasn't played the god-damn game.

Good one there mate.

Thats the thing though, its not fucking extra stuff.

Its a bad game mate, there's no denying it. Its a bad Tales game, hell without the Tales in the name its not even serviceable.

Oh, so you do fight yourself I had forgotten that. I guess you got 1 point.

Calling that the final boss -1
Wrong, he is the lord of monsters -2
End of the world, seriously? -3
Denying that she has characterization just because you don't like her -4
Your own video proves you wrong you fucking idiot -5

Well I got one wrong. But you calling the fight that was effectively a cutscene fight, the final boss threw me off.
Still, one wrong for me vs five wrong for you. It shows who here has brain problems and does not know what hes is talking about.

Don't try to change the topic. This isn't about whether the game is good or not, it about you barely knowing anything about the game. If you are going to bitch about some points at least get the points right. Nobody needs some alzheimer's patient complaining about some things that aren't even true.

How am I supposed to remember every single instance of a game I finished a decade ago? If it were good I'd remember it, however, what I vaguely do remember was that it was shit. But then again you're the pro about Symphonia 2 despite never actually putting forward any points.
