Since I'd rather not bother the drawfags here with a request since I know it's best to let them have their freedom and I have a slightly specific design for a character in mind… does anyone here know of any artists that are doing commissions? Someone with a unique artstyle or something? Not looking for moe-anime-stuff, or photorealistic, but maybe something like from these pics. You know, something cool, or maybe simple; something that doesn't look like something off a generic fantasy book cover, if that helps. I especially love the style in the last image. I have to apologize for how general I'm being, it's hard to describe what I'm looking for, really. Which is why I'm trying to broaden my search.

If any artists here are down for a commission I'd be more than happy to go with that as well if you've got a unique style to ya. Maybe even if ya don't. I just really want this done! It'll be my first ever DnD character so I'm super hyped.

I've played with him a few times now and I'm totally connected. Even if I end up dying due to some shitty rolls, he's my first character and I'd love to immoralize him. I can go into more detail here, but I'd just really like to get some recommendations above anything else. I'm no good with finding artists unfortunately.

How does an artist develop their own style anyways? I've been practicing realistic, yet I have no idea how to start my own style.

from what I know, it's basically the way you tend to draw when not pushing realism, when proportions or certain techniques are done wrong but work out. You then enhance the flaw and make it something pretty and unique.

Style is, or should be, an afterthought, the main thing you should do is developing your fundamentals. Your style comes when you settle for things that inspire you or feel are visually pleasing for you. Being able to change your "style" is better that just doing the same thing. Going out of your confort zone will not only help you be a better artist, it can help you to work on projects where you need to draw or paint in a certain style (Think that can be easily done with good fundamentals) and with that being a professional artist.

It's never too late to start learning or have art as a profession, the thing is making that skill profitable. Bringing something that differentiates from other artists can help you, but with arts, unless you have a big fanbase or a secured job with steady pay, don't quit your day job.

Oh, hi, user. Hope you're doing fine.

It's great that you're trying some foreshortening but I noticed a couple of things that I would like to point you out. Also, I would advice you to try to make the hair flow a bit more and make it just a tad more complex since that's a prominent element in those characters. Hair can be a bit hard to draw properly but it follow certain rules that can help you get great results while not taking a lot of time working on it. And if you have problems with the alignment of the eyes, use guidelines and flip your canvas to make sure everything is in place.

Practise smart, go for the fundamentals and do it frequently, also try setting an achievable goal and relate it to any thing you would like to draw.

Quick question, but how do you guys put what you visualize on paper? I can never so that without reference, and even then, my drawings always come off as disjointed. How do you get off expressions, positions, and everything else so fast from imagination?

That was my problem, I'd overestimate my abilities and when what I drew turned out to be shit because I was shit I wouldn't draw anymore.

You have a general idea, and then you start putting down construction lines/shapes down, and then add details. Having basic shapes and guidelines on the paper makes it much easier to visualize what to put there. And you use your knowledge of anatomy and shit to interpret the details of individual parts of the character, but only when you're actually drawing that part.

Didn't some artists only git gud late in life, like 50's and such? You're not even two decades old, you still have plenty of time.

That's a shame, it sounded like a pretty simple project. At least I was able to practice with that Wario picture I was doing.

In my case, it's just going step by step. Draw quick lines to try and illustrate what you want to draw, then go over it with your knowledge of anatomy, perspective, whatever you need for that certain image.

That said though, you should be using references. Hell, the drawing I made that you quoted used references. It's not some shameful tactic that lesser artists use, it's actually really helpful.

Art is VERY difficult to make a career out of, even for some who do it all the time. You need to be extremely dedicated to it, and you can't get there quickly unless you're particularly talented, which I assume you aren't. A college isn't fast enough to bring you there, and depending on what kind of college we're talking about it might take you 50 steps backwards.

you have to know how to market yourself, otherwise your only other option is being an employed concept artist, but to get that position you still need to create a nice portfolio
