Pope Innocent XI previously funded Williams troops under agreement reached at the Treaty of Augsburg. This was because both William and the papacy had allied together to curtail the power of catholic Louis XIV of France. As well as being allied with the papacy, William was also allied with Catholic Spain. James of course, was allied with France.
