Does anyone outside of Holla Forums even play this game? I checked last night at around 8pm (est) and there were only a few servers with people in them, none that were full.

I'm enjoying myself against bots, so I want to see how fun it is against other players.

Besides duel servers, I've never actually seen a full server. But yeah, people outside of Holla Forums play this game. Normally instagib+hook CTF servers are more populated, but Saturday was mentioned to be a slow day for whatever reason.

The bots aren't smart and for custom maps they don't have waypoints, so I suggest playing with people.

Sounds about right, if more were inclined to "kickstart" larger matches I think more games would be going on in general. Without idling, it just takes 2 players dueling for a bit in a non-duel server. Right now it's 8 pm EDT which was the voted playing time for tonight, so join in if you were looking to play at this time.

New maps are always welcome regardless of mode, and I'll add them to the server if they're available for Xonotic.
(We're kind of short on CTS maps, and I'm generally too shit at movement to test if they're doable with unmodified physics and weapons.)

I'll see what I can dig up regarding cts maps. Also went a couple pages further and Elder and Hektik are in there. Played a little bit of the latter but never played the former and it seems cool.

If you can find pornstar maps, those usually work pretty well for basic strafes/bhops. Since they're pk3's unless there's some fuckery going on you can probably just grab them from a Quake map repository. Asspipes is a good one that I've been practicing on in Reflex. Not totally sure how it'll work out given that there's a lot of ramps and they dont work the same way in Xonotic, but we'll see

I assume there still has to be some kind of conversion for the maps otherwise the weapons to spawn aren't going to turn out right. Though still, Quake map repositories better organized and cataloged than Xonotic's current one (which right now is just a dump of all maps, no descriptions, and literally anything could be in there including maps that cause servers to crash, or maps specifically for defrag and whatever else).

Quake maps tend to have a bunch of versions for the same thing available, but running through some of the ones I downloaded, some are mostly okay except the skybox is just black (not a huge deal since they're mostly indoor scenes). If someone spots a fixed version, I'll put that in and remove the outdated one when I can.

Which is why it shouldn't be an issue for most DeFRaG/CTS maps. Some of them have weapons for sure, but quite a lot of them are movement-only. Pornstar's tend to be that way which is why I threw the name out there

Mentioned this earlier today, but we really should get some sort of centralized chat/voip client going. Not only does it provide a better place than the thread to see if people are playing, but it also allows better communication than in-game text chat. It could also be used to more effectively share information with anons from the other threads

Not sure what client we should be using. I suggested Discord earlier but I don't know if that works for everyone. Anteras mentioned deleting it

The issue with chat clients is that Holla Forums isn't agreeing on one- even within Discord there are several Holla Forums instances and the client itself is not something our players from Lainchan will agree to use. The same sentiment, I can except to grow here as well

And there will be others who will not bother to install another client just to organize a game.

Not really. If the map is just unpopular, it can remain unpopular and be played by the minority of players that actually enjoy it, and to add to the variety for the ones who don't mind it.

I will remove maps that cause or have major problems (unbeatable CTS maps, maps that cause crashes, etc). As far as I can tell, the server can't be online if I want to remove the files it's using.

This, having a lot of variety in maps is a good thing. Playing on the same maps over and over can get stale so having a large selection to choose from can counter that. And as a new player with little experience regarding proper AFPS games i really enjoy being able to play different maps even if i do have a bad habit of always voting for hyperspace when i see it and learning the ins and outs of each of them as it puts an emphasis on quickly memorizing where everything is on the map and the general layout. It helps me learn and grow as a player. For an example i played on a map that had a focus on ramp jumps i had no idea of just how much of a boost i could get from jumping on that sweet spot on ramps before said map. Now I'm seeing all sorts of ways to get around other maps I've played on before because of that.

Is the advantage of Discord that IP addresses aren't visible to the clients or the would-be mumble server host? I mean, if that was your concern, then the alternative is trusting the Discord people with the connected addresses instead, correct?

Been a while since I've used Mumble. I do know that IRC blurts out the ip address whenever you connect, but mainly it's that Holla Forums is scattered around different chat clients. If you'd like to organize games on Discord, I've no problem with others linking the schedule polls in the channel (the lainons have their Mumble server). If a chat client is the primary method of coordinating matches, it'll be leaving out the anons who aren't willing to install/use it (the clients may be convenient, but everyone won't agree with the terms of use and privacy policy).

As for ip stuff, this has been enabled ever since the server was first online. As for how comprehensive it is against internet tough guys, I'm not sure myself.

I have ts3, mumble and discord installed. I'm okay with pretty much anything that doesn't run like garbage. My initial suggestion was discord because it's free and easy, and doesn't even require the full client to use (as far as I'm aware, the web version is fine as far as functionality is concerned) but the ultimate goal was to consolidate users for better communication in and out of game. If that's not really a possibility then there's not much point.

That said I can hop in VoIP or drop a link to a channel if someone's interested in talking shop or going over match details.

Can't really comment on voip, since I don't really use popular ones- the encrypted p2p one that /g/ and Holla Forums made is primarily used by Holla Forums and Holla Forums- though I used Mumble before to play other games on Holla Forums. About Lainchan using Mumble, I assume it's general usage as it's mentioned that the site administration and moderators over there play the game.

It's times like these that inspire me to get off my lazy ass and go buy a real mouse.

I'm on the server right now trying to get better times. The one of the voted times was 8 pm EDT which is right about now. The most voted time is still 10 pm to midnight.

I'll be on once I've submitted my resume/prior education to a course I wanna get into. Circle/strafe/ramp/bhop training can commence whenever. Just remember that my strafe jumps are garbage, so you'll only get the basic theory

With how often maps fail to download, a repo of the current map list would be great.

Server will be off for a bit (while no one is playing) to update to git version as suggested. The current release can still be run if you all prefer that instead.

How frequently that happens is kind of astounding if you ask me. I have no idea if it's really server side or client side.

First image: what in the fuck am I downloading. I've kind of considered it a bonus, that the only thing needed to go on the server is just the custom map if its currently being played.

Second image: The silly bug (?) where a projectile gets caught between the jump pad and a wall. And makes a jittery noise that everyone can hear still happens.

Third image: So now there's damage dealt/taken on the scoreboard.

Fourth image: The game mode descriptions are now different.

Well isn't this fancy. The main menu art is updated, and now there's floating damage numbers. Still no borderless windowed mode and have to force it with something else.

Got a few people online right now playing CTS. Broke a few of my records and placed a new fastest time and speed on one of the new CTS maps.

It's been a popular request to add defrag physics to the server since it has votable CTS. Wanting to gauge some more thought from the thread. At the moment, with the changes it does not seem possible to have both a "CTS vanilla" and "CTS defrag" meanwhile having the leaderboards separate respectively (something I really want).

Modified physics wherein there's no speed limit, among other differences. Generally, it would not be fair to have records set with speed limited, regular physics compared and ranked against those with defrag physics.

The idea of adding CTS was for new players to improve with movement, so having defrag physics and getting good there, might ("might", because I haven't played defrag and don't know how it would carry over) not be as helpful since every other game mode that's played wouldn't be using it. Not going to rush adding it since the defraggers have their server in Dallas.

The issue is that there's not much point to CTS with standard physics, as Mario pointed out. All you can do in CTS is hit speedcap and hope that there's a weapon or ramp that will let you accel past that. It literally becomes a game of who can hit and maintain the fastest speed above cap without even slightly fucking up their movement, which I suppose could be considered useful for DM etc if most of the CTS maps weren't broad turns and straight lines
Better to pursue Race for vanilla gofast funtimes

Regarding leaderboards, again, it's literally about finding the largest speed boost and maintaining it. If Bloodied Prince knew the perfect angles for strafe/bhop, he'd have the fastest times, since all it takes is maintaining that max speed. Defrag involves a lot more accel/decel than that and forces you to plan routes accordingly

Also a lot of shit is broke on vanilla physics. You cant get the speed required to do some jumps, and AFAIK the knockback properties are fucked for quite a few other maps

Regarding learning though, isn't defrag just putting more emphasis on bhop/strafejumping? Those are useful skills to have for vanilla even if they get capped out pretty quick, unless you're going to argue that I'm not zipping around maps a lot faster than other players

also on an entirely different note, my ayylo went down 32 points from fucking around on that aim map match last night, and I did over 2k shotgun damage in that fuckaround dm match. Weapon pickups confirmed overrated

On the flip side, I'm now rank 16 and have never played DM on another server. Ayylo is the most reliable

Finally, as a reminder for anyone who looks at this thread and is new (I dunno how many people are organically coming to the server or are coming from lainchan etc.) hit me up if you want some pointers, or just spec me if you wanna learn movement. It's all about movement inputs and mouse movement

tbh, we're 2nd most active public server in Xonotic (1st being an instagib+hook server in Europe), and you don't have much real competition aside from few top duelers coming in. Meanwhile the other guy mainly comes on at pic related.

I very much need the practice with regular physics and not fucking up my run. Defrag sounds fun but I'm surely not the only one who needs lots of movement improvement before getting used to something else.

Unless someone massively fucked with Defrag, the main skillsets are the same, the only real difference is that the degree with which you accurately move your mouse for strafes/bhops will be a visible factor in XDF, and wont be in vanilla. The physics will be different (with regards to speed and weapon-based jumps) but so will the maps (from the other modes I mean) so it's not like you're going to be practicing SilentSiege jumps in CTS (unless someone adds a b0_beta equivalent fro this game)

For context, here's a run of a map we have on the server in XDF. As you can see, he can go over the speed cap of 900 and finish in a much better time, which means that someone still practicing those moves knows how fast they could go if they did it correctly. In the current version of CTS it's just a matter of how fast you can cap out your speed, and then it's a matter of, with machine-like precision, not losing a single bit of speed on the rest of the run. The gradient between "I've got this shit down" and "I'm not sure what I'm doing but this seems to work" is nowhere near as noticeable

I'm all for whatever config makes for good practice. My only fear is that we'll have less deathmatch if people vote for defrag more.

Now that I think about it. This might be because of collisions I unknowledgeably altered server side for CTS because some maps had invisible walls at spawn that blocked anyone from actually crossing the start line.

It's been pretty back and forth honestly. The only mode we havent been playing much that I'd like to see more of is CTF, and that one's a bit of a pain in the ass to do due to odd numbered players and lots of dropping in/out

So as expected, the maps that were possible before are a little harder now because of the strafejump requirement, but many portions of maps are reachable now and weren't before. It seems like the defrag physics handles stairs differently though. I might just have to see if b0 works, because while double jumps and stair jumps are not applicable, ramp, circle and strafe jumps are, and the map is an excellent learning tool. The weapon rooms would still be fucked though until I learn how to properly convert maps

Speaking of b0 actually, if you want to know strafe/circle details (and slightly different but still the same in principle ramps) the embed has a full play through of the map, with each stage fully explained. It was a huge help for learning CPM, which, if you figure that shit out, makes vanilla xonotic pretty easy to handle in comparison.

Also if anyone can find a working version of Gothic Blocks or Spider Crossings, both are great CTF maps. I tried checking the archive but none of them seemed to have spawn weapons or flags, and weapons didn't function properly.

Some good races last night, and some good matches too. If there's been anyone lurking and wondering if they should give this game a shot, it's a great entry point for AFPS and there's people on pretty much every night.

I'm going to be on practicing my movement in CTS for a bit if anyone wants to join me.

Also worth noting, one of the announcers, SDK has a channel full of good shit when it comes to Quake and AFPS duel and TDM mental processes. He does a lot of CSGO shit now, but a lot of his rant videos apply to basically any competitive game, and he has a number of older videos you can find in his playlists that are excellent for describing duels and the like.

Did some reconfiguration and testing.

Aside from CTS not having vanilla physics, there is no respawn delay or timer to respawn. It's just instant on death, and suicide antispam has been disabled. The timer will still show up, but it's completely ignored if you press the spawn key.
Powerups have been disabled on Freeze Tag so it won't be a matter of which team has a member spawning closest to it.
Going to look into disabling the team shuffle vote for Clan Arena.

It happens, and to be totally honest you did pretty well for your first time. Now you gotta start learning and practicing the basics: movement, items and proper weapon usage.
The former two can be practiced whenever, with or without other players. Just hop on a map and run between items and try to get on the megas as soon as they spawn (30s timer). Also if you have music on, cut that shit out so you can hear pickup sounds.

For weapons, aim helps, but so does map knowledge and player prediction. I've won maps against people with better aim than me because I was popping rockets into where I knew they were going to be. Much easier to hit a static point on the map than to try to lead a shot at a moving player, and people don't juke so well when they've just come screaming through a doorway at mach 2

Improved my rank for some of the CTS maps. I'm now 2nd or 3rd place depending if Fetus played on the map.

Going to get on and play for a bit. Did a few duels on BFG's server with some guy and shilled our own.

To no one's surprise, the owl comes online and frags a late night batch of newbies who've joined within the past hour.

Sorry about whatever inconveniences from last night. The map repository for Xonotic went down (and still is). There shouldn't be much of a problem now as clients will be downloading from from another server (the same box as the game server if not the redirects).

The flags are actually there on Spider Crossings. If you set the player limit to 1 for Multiplayer > Create, it causes some weird stuff to happen, one of them being the no-flags thing for Quake ported maps. Don't know what's going on for no-weapons.

I'm going to be on for a bit practicing my movement on CTS. I think I'm starting to git gud, but as i keep playing and git better so does everyone else so it's hard to tell if i really am improving or not. I suppose that i can more or less keep up with some of you is a good thing but i still have a lot of room for improvement.

My ramp jumps are okay. I can do some basic ramp jumps but there are a few more difficult ones that require a lot of speed to do that I've yet to get a hang of. As far as my mega timing goes i know that they always respawn after 30 seconds of being picked up, or 1 minute (I think) in the case of the quad and shield so if i hear the pick up sound or pick them up myself i take a look at the round timer and check back at the spawn locations after the 30 seconds/one minute. However, even with this knowledge i don't always get them. Whether it be because the mega is close to spawning but being contested, i don't hear the pick up or know when it was last taken or any such other reason. The biggest issue for me is which major pick ups have priority over others. Like, if mega health and quad are both up which one should i go for? If i have a good stack already should i just get the quad first and then go for the health? Or should i go for the health so that i have slightly higher chance of surviving against someone who took the quad, whom may or may not have a good stack?

I basically go Quad > Armor > Health. Even if I lose the other guy doesn't have Quad and is probably out of position for that Mega, which I could spawn close to if the arena gods are on my side.

When it comes to armor vs health, it kinda depends, but in a 100hp 0 armor scenario armor is a better long term choice because it wont tick down like the health will

When it comes down to having a good stack already, still go for Quad and then use the Mega to top yourself off afterwards

Off of spawn, if I can steal and run I'll take a mega even if only to deny, and otherwise I grab at least one of Dev, Mortar or Vort and some armor if it's handy

As mentioned in game, CTS maps will no longer appear in the voting options for DM. Same goes for clearly non-CTF maps on CTF map options.

Anything else to note, we getting a bit more scattered in times to play. Hopefully we can all get together on the same times on the weekends. And Komier has been suggesting the server handle shots by "shoot from eye" as opposed to currently "shoot from gun". It would be set this way if a game mode with XPM is available as a voting option, but hearing some opinions on it would be nice as well.

I like the warm up period from XPM, so I'll be keeping that; however XPM does not seem to be fucking off for every other mode. Meanwhile my strafe jumps are getting 0.3g, which is higher than I usually do in non-XDF, so XPM might have fucked with physics in some way.

I'll just leave it this way for now and figure out something after. I guess.

Before I go to bed, I would like to show a neat little jump that I'm sure most people have figured out by now.

I've been telling you fags about that jump for ages. If you zip towards strength from there you can also rampjump over that weird little wall and take the 25s on the other side or move straight through the door, and there's the one more people use which is the ramp jump from stairs to mortar
There's also that minor one where you can skip the stairs and go from the main atrium floor to mega health. It's not much of a shortcut though

That's got to be a pretty old/weak pc if it can't run Xonotic. I'm using a fairly weak laptop with some years on it and i can run the game just fine after tweaking a few of the settings. I know one of the issues i had was that by default (I think, can't remember if it was something i did without realizing.) Xonotic doesn't have a frame rate cap which made it look very jumpy and jittery. Capped it at 60 and lowered some of the settings and it runs swell now, still looks decent too.
I suggest playing with the settings for awhile it'd be a real shame if you couldn't join us.

Good breakdown. Biggest issue for me is having the discipline to practice this all the time or any time. Having that timing down seems to make all the difference.

set aside just 1 match/day, just you in a given map (pick a favourite or two)
Run between the megas, trying to time them down to a T. Take different routes once you feel comfortable

I practiced this on Aerowalk and CPM15, but I dunno that the former is the best choice on Xon

Should specify, once you have the time, dont just run to the mega spawns and wait. Zoom around the map and practice movement, making sure to be back on-time

I found that dicking about with AIs is helpful up to a certain point. Personally, I also like weird gametypes/mutators that I'm pretty sure I'll never see on a server (Instagib onslaught, for example)

Also, for new maps, I can't recommend Box Gardens enough. It's excellent on every gametype, and has waypoints (although we rarely use bots)

If you wanna dick around with AI, grab a copy of Quake 3, go to playmorepromode.com, install CPM and start on level 10 or 20 bots in 1v1 practice. A lot of the maps we play on are Q3/CPM maps anyway and the bot levels go up to 100. I can personally vouch for 80 being beatable. There much better than Xon bots, though they still can't reach every item

Dont start on 1-5 as those are the default Q3 difficulties

If anyone does decide to go down this route, there's a few things to note

1. You have to jump manually
2. You don't glide up stairs but can double jump off of them (jump twice in 400ms)
3. You don't retain momentum through teleporters
4. Items work differently, see cpma-news.org/guides/content/basics#items
Armors have different absorption rates and mega health's timer requires the holder to revert to 100 health or less

Normally I'd suggest binding jump to rmb because CPM doesn't have altfires and it's an "easier" jump key but you may not wanna make a habit of it. The basic goal should be to practice movement, aim/prediction, map layouts and item timers with much more advanced bots

If you check the thread at all, c, you gotta stop being so paranoid. You've decided now that a confirmed rando and the server admin are the same person. You also seem to have trouble detecting the many floors of the ruse cruise, but at least you spotted the ship. Literally all you had to do was check the server stats and one of the match logs and you'd figure out that it was Ant. I gave you all the hints in the world without completely giving the game away

We should just start rotating names sometime. I don't think there's any issue saying that here because 4 people total probably check this thread enough to see it, and they're the people who would figure it out or take part anyway

Is a forum account required to sign up? I might consider playing with 200 ping for fun. The only other thing I'd be worried about is some contingency like my internet going out while I'm playing, and making it look like I bitched out partway through a match in a tourney.

I think they mentioned registering through irc in the thread but you can just make an unrelated throwaway account and leave your IGN in there. I did the latter

Got it running, but I can get any more than 19fps.
Tried google, but can't find anything useful.

Specs are:
OS: Windows 7
CPU: intel 3930k @ 3.8GHz
GPU: GTX 770

What are your settings? You should definitely be going higher than 19 on a 770 and 3.8ghz cpu

Oh that, yeah I've had that issue. Restarting Xonotic seems to fix it in most cases

Is Xonotic bascially like similiar to Quake 3 Arena/Quake Live?

I'd say it's closer to CPM than VQ3 movement and weapons-wise so if you've played PQL you shouldn't have too much trouble adjusting

If you haven't, basically take strafejumping and then add in Q3 style bunnyhopping. CPM also adds Q2 style double jumps (2nd jump within 400ms is 50% higher than the first) but Xon just lets you rocket up stairs instead of clipping into them and you maintain momentum through teleporters. So the parameters for doublejump are right out

For weapons, everything has an altfire, and the grenade launcher is a lot more of a direct combat weapon, but the basic weapon roles are mostly the same. One thing to note though is that reload time can be partially skipped by swapping weapons, which is a more combo-heavy version of CPM/PQL's instant switch

Items are a lot easier though. Armor is just all green all the time. In Vanilla you can just grab any item to stack above 100, but in XPM you can only use megas. Health/Armor pickups are 5, 25, 50 and 100. Both megas are on 30s timers like in (iirc) VQ3. Your health will also regen back up to 100 slowly, which doesn't really make a difference in duel unless your opponent is playing passively but it does stretch out newbie fights

Otherwise, on a basic level, yeah it's like a different iteration of Q3

How is weapon usage in Xonotic, anyway? Is it like q3 where you have your go-tos for most situations (rockets, LG, rail) and most other ones are situational, or are things more "balanced" than that?

The go-to weapons are similar; GL, RL, rail, and a projectile shotgun are the big guns for direct fire. There are a few useful area denial weapons that are pretty different from quake weapons. The LG equivalent is only in a few modes and isn't as useful for a few reasons. Pretty different but the fundamentals are similar enough that the good quake players tend to do very well very quickly.

GL fires faster, but only does 50 damage on a direct hit, rocket can be guided and rail needs to be charged
A lot of what you'll end up doing is combining those 3. Mortars (GL) into Devastators (RL) into Vortex (RG) or something similar. The HAGAR (PG equiv) isn't very good unfortunately, and the Crylink (projectile shotgun) is a bit crazy at the moment, being good for close range, spam, pulling and slowing all at once. Electro will be your Quake 3 GL (altfire shoots little orbs you can trigger with your primary fire, and they can hurt on contact as well), and you wont be using your LG skills quite as much because the MG isn't very good and the Arc isn't available on all maps.

It's still very 3 weapon, but it's a different set of 3.

Hopefully they can bring the crylink in line and make the electo and hagar a bit better

Speaking of the arc actually, there's an option to trade that shit out isn't there? We should look into replacing the MG on smaller maps at the very least
