For your thatch roof, don't angle it like that. Keep it completely rectangular and extend it one tile over the edge of the building it's covering. Also, for a building of that size, the thatch should be around 6 tiles tall. It'll look more like this picture viewed from the front. In fact, all of your roofing should extend just a little past the building. Don't be afraid of making the roofs too tall, because it just makes the building look like it has depth.

Every 3, 4, or 5 tiles inside your main building's wooden rooms needs to have a support going up in the background. Use the wood panels for this, or use the wicker. It'll break up the monotony of a flat wooden background. Whichever distance you decide to use, resize your wooden rooms so that they cycle only on the next support. It'll look natural.

The cobblestone your tower is built from looks absolutely horrible. Cobblestone like that looks better as roads than it does as a structure. Consider using other stone slab for it. Look at the materials your wells were built out of. Also consider applying supports up the tower like suggested for the wooden rooms.

Your 2x2 windows are very boring, and are placed too high. Try using windows that are rectangular. Use more 4 wide 3 tall windows, and place them two tiles off of the ground.

For the ground level of wooden buildings, consider using the wooden bridge tile for extra detail. It looks nice when used as flooring in wooden buildings.

If you want to maintain the style, replace the torches with oil lamps. They look significantly better than torches, and they light up more consistently and at a better color. Plain torches are actually painful to look at in construction.

Don't use glass windows in the stone tower. Use wooden lattice or any of the fences if you absolutely want something to be a window. Glass looks really awkward when inserted into stone structures.

Don't stack your crates so neatly. Replace at least one of the crates with a large crate, and don't mix up wooden crates with metal crates. You might think adding more crate types adds more detail, but it really just looks like a toddler decorated. And on that note, don't put all of your crafting in one room. You don't have to keep crafting stations close like in Terraria, and it looks more unnatural in Starbound.

Don't use pillars for tower roofing. That'd look much better with either appropriately placed clay roof tiles, or with a stone rampart instead of a sloped roof.

Make the floors in the stone tower smaller. There is too much empty space in between.

It's not a fantastic game, it's not even a great game. And I'm not even sure it's a "good" game, but it's entertaining enough and I have 350 hours in Terraria so I just wanted something fresher.

If nothing else, it has better combat and a better lighting system. Also exploration is a lot more fun because of the cool setpieces that end up being generated everywhere, even underground.

That lonely explorer vibe was in your head, stop your bitching everywhere. You don't have to do the quest if you don't want to, it just barely serves as a guide to progression. Yes, the 'plot' they added was pretty much garbage and I would've liked something more akin to the original plan, but seriously, you can 'rp' as whatever you want to be.

It's not like the game really did much for lonely explorer earlier, just do enough of the plot to get your ship fixed (which isn't far in at all) and never look back. Bam, now you're lonely explorer.

Wow, I didn't expect actual advice, but yeah. I know it's a clusterfuck. It was built with very limited materials and knowledge of the engine, first house and all. I'd tear it down and rebuild it but since a lot of it's storage is being used it's kind of inconvenient to do so.

Now that there's pretty much nothing left to do in the game but build I can probably do a much better job. It's just irritating that if I want some building materials I'll have to level some NPC hovels to do it.

Maybe, just maybe they divide the game on storymode and questmode, writing all that shit for the quests would be the hard part, hacking it out would be a lot easier. I would think it would also be possible to mod such a thing.
