The real purpose of torture isn't to elicit answers, but to break the brain in desired ways. You don't torture information out of someone, because you will never know if you're sending your commandos on a wild goose chase (or worse, a trap/ambush). You torture to break the ego and will, and then inculcate desired behavior.
