Checked, and you hit the nail on the head. Go look at any of the "meme catalogue sites" like Know Your Meme, and scroll down to the history section. Invariably, they almost always list reddit or another site as the "earliest known use" of a meme, even though it's 100% definitely a meme that came from 4chan, 8ch, or another imageboard. Because of the transient nature of imageboards, it's much harder to identify a first use. That's why they always just use the first non-imageboard use of a meme. Same here.
