I see no reason to disbelieve in the effect and instead cling to some bizarre theory of highly specific mass memory error. I would think that creating an alternate reality that mirrors our past one would be made a perfect copy if possible. If there were no errors, then there would be no proof in comparison to the very limited proof we have now. If there's no explainable reason as to why the Mandela effect is the main purpose of CERN or whatever put us into this hypothetical mess, then it's just a side effect.
I agree that it's highly likely it's just a side effect, it seems closer to that. But if it was their main intention, I wouldn't be surprised if they made a few mistakes. they are playing with the universe after all. that's got to be really easy to screw up.
