Most recent was just that Half-Life: Raising the Bar book, it turned out to not have anything that wasn't already uploaded to the Half-Life wiki or Combine Over-Wiki or whatever faggoty title they've got for it.

Holla Forums is about as well read as a kindergartener and /lit/'s tastes are typicaly too flowery for my reading, though I mostly like fiction and lately I've been reading Isaac Asimov

Holla Forums need to read
reading about vidya is fun just like vidya them selves

I feel bad for you bud

Planescape Torment has a lot words if you want something to read.

Half-Life's got some decent to good psych horror in it and I was curious at what they had for concept art or first-drafts of some aliens, Ichthyosaurs still make me dribble fear-poop whenever I have to go in water when I play that game.

Shame Half-Life 2 ended up being so fucking feel-good because I liked the general grunge, filthy and genuinely post-apoc design of their first draft for the game's plot instead of recycling a handful of elements from it to make it a good-end 1984 with aliens. Breen's first-draft known as the Consul would've been made legitimately immortal by the Combine through being grafted to a hideous machine, for instance.

STAY AWAY FROM TIER BOOKS

Don't really read vidya related books much.

Master of Doom is a nice. Not really informative of how the development goes but it's nice to see how old id work (and crash).

Console Wars, i've only read some first few pages. Looks like a fun read too. Foreword is horrible though.

Anyway, i've rather play a game with story rather than reading vidya-related books.

The narrative of a game is not enough of its own

It is much more fun to combine it with the cultural effect artistic homages and the hidden mechanical creativity
The good thing about art "if you consider vidya art " is that the interpretation of the work is no longer in hand of the creator alone you add a narrative of your own

I want a book talking about E.Y.E and explain to me what the fuck was going on in that game

OP what the fuck is wrong with you

You tell me

/loleftypol/ and that fag rainbow. Are you a commie homo?

neither
i go there for philosophy only i have nothing to do with leftism i just like to talk about Camus , Kierkegaard , Sartre and Hegel etc…

And the book is good don't let the gay look fool you

Most of the """Gaming culture """ books are fucking SJWs cancer

Go back before 2007-2008 there's that fucking date again and vidya books generally stray more towards coffee-table fare or things like that one college student's massive peeling apart of Wario Land 4's game design.

You know exactly what part he's addressing, silly goon. That being said, I like vidya writan, so I'm just going to ignore your faggotry.

I've never read a good published vidya novel. I've gone through hundreds, maybe thousands of fanfics, and have found only three of any length that are written well enough to recommend.

Tales from the Wasteland: Black as Oil
Fallout 3 fic. Protagonist is a donut steel alien/human hybrid, and before that turns you off, they're a physically-pathetic near-cripple riddled with health issues on account of being a biological abomination. Good characters and autistically devoted to following lore/game mechanics. Short and sweet at 105k words finished, had me wishing there was more. Reread it fairly recently and it held up.
fanfiction.net/s/5107949/1/Tales-From-the-Wasteland-Black-As-Oil

Then there's Pedestal and Ree Majors' Wonderful Journey. They're both pokemon fics, and they share a universe and maybe an overarching plot, with different protagonists who aren't involved with each other. I personally knew the author of both of these, and she drank SocJus kool-aid between Pedestal and Ree. That being said, Pedestal is much older and probably less well-written than Ree.

Pedestal is first person and follows a young trainer, nameless and sexless by gimmick. Put briefly, it's about a trainer who hypes up and fantasizes about his would-be team, gets shit instead and learns to make do. There's also a subplot about an attempted coup, which is where the edge comes from, chock full of violence and character death. I thought it was bretty gud when I last read it, but that was several years ago and my taste may have beenn shittier, fair warning.
fanfiction.net/s/4871317/5/Pedestal

Ree is about an asshole of a girl who gets pregnant and runs off to do the gym circuit for 9 months so she can dump the baby without her boyfriend ever finding out. It's mostly comfy pokemon team interaction interspersed with tragic loss. My only major gripe is characters referencing all the author's favorite games/music/other RL media and one SJW-y bit about the protagonist's boyfriend bitching about muh sexist portrayal of womyn. Both of these can be dodged almost entirely by skipping any of the flashback snippets (located at the start of each chapter) concerning Ree and her boyfriend, which hold no plot relevance beyond explaining why you should give a shit about their relationship. Overall, I still enjoy it, but be warned that the last update came over a year ago.

What's the point of reading up about videogames?
I'd rather pick up a book about programming since it's more useful or a classic book since odds are it will have a great story.
Sage because this is Holla Forums and not /lit/

Because good games have more than just tech or story.

Yeah but then I'd just play a game instead of reading a book about it.

there is a lot of vidya documentation books like this one
Not my fav type tbh they are more for the ones outside of this hobby

Yeah of course how did i forgot
Some of the stuff in c0da is super fun you need to try it out buddy

i will try the first fallout one

reading c0da after playing morowind make the game 10 times better

The longest piece of literature in recorded history is one autist's self-insert Super Smash Bros. crossover fanfiction, user.

That reminds me, pic related is the closest that I ever came to when it comes to vidya books, and it was horrible.
Not even one chapter in, and the author already casually namedropped over 10 old consoles for absolutely no plot relevance while blabbering about some guy being a cuck and being intimidated by the girl's drunk boyfriend.
I don't think I've ever dropped a book this fast

Any good? The only books I read about vidya are concept art collections

You picked the wrong book lad

Nah documentary book that you are not the target demographic for

I came here to post this but you beat me to it. Masters of Doom was a pretty fun read.

Yeah, I remember that it was reccomended to me on Holla Forums a few years ago and I picked it up on a whim, big mistake.

If you need a book to tell you what's going on in a game or about some of the most glaring issues/achievements of said game, then you really have to work on your critical thinking.

Anyways, all those books about video games are trash, and those books about a specific video game's lore? Trash. Chances are your favorite game was either based off a book, based off a movie about a book, or was influenced by the concepts, characters, and story discussed in said art. Ever hear the saying that nothing is really original? It most definitely applies here. If you seriously want to read something worth a damn, look behind the inspiration behind some of your favorite games. Metal Gear Solid got me into things like Shakespeare and Chinese lit long before I was forced to read it in school. The Devil May Cry series got me into The Divine Comedy. And more recently, Bloodborne finally got me into Lovecraft. Who knows? Maybe you'll take away something from that literature and find yourself inspired to create your own work.

Hard to say, otherwise they'd already realized that communism never works

Don't jinx them
plz
I only go there for philosophy

the body of work itself is worth looking at it as a separate being from it source

And i do read things vidya got me interested about like darksider and the 4 housemen of apocalypse , Shogun 2 got me into jap history etc…

never
been
tried
before
not real socalism
bernie will make it alright guys
just keep giiving him your money

Still not a good reason, might as well go to /christian/ then

They don't like existentialism and will shove "Christ love you" in my throat every fucking time i talk about Camus philosophical suicide

They even branded Kierkegaard as a heretic

I wonder if they're still doing it?

Christ loves you

...

I really like Darksiders The Abomination Vault, particularly the chemistry between Strife and Death.

Can I get a source on this?

I don't really like to read anything except reference books and directories.

Right now, I'm reading this ancient fuckhuge dictionary from Reader's Digest.

It's got Funk and Wagnell's standard dictionary, a medical dictionary, quotations, bilingual dictionaries, and a lot of illustrations.

The only good vidya books are design archives and the crap hg101 shits out every now and then.

Op is a Hillary supporter

How's the MGS book?
How's the Republic Commando books? They're shit, aren't they?

Vidya isn't history, science or religion. We were around for most of it. If you need a book to fill in your knowledge you're posting in the wrong place.

Trash avoid them

Meh i like some eye candy just like you Guild wars 2 and Zone of the enders had great art books tbh

This is pure autism right here i can't get past the 4th page

Vidya can be interpenetrated in multiple ways even out side of the well of creator

One good side of Post-modernism is this liberation of the work of it is own narrative to be taken by the reader , player and to extend the actual and factual sides of the body of work
You can follow Hegel when analyzing craft and art gameplay of vidya i think is the Hegelian end of art for it is an art that not just invite the preserver to engage with but even radically the art itself stop if you don't interact with it

In vidya i saw the Hegelin true End of art free from that old man limitation

Vidya philosophically are a fucking big deal

I've only read Contact Harvest, Cole Protocol and the Crysis 2 novel by Peter Watts, which was much more entertaining than playing Crysis 2.
Solid books, would recommend all three.

I tried reading Warcraft books. Now I don't even remember why I lost interest in that universe, was it shit books or shit games.

In terms of good ones however I can easily just say Warhammer. I probably was wrong to pick Archaon after finishing TW:W because it is technically End/Shit Times lore, but Dead Man Walking was last book I read and it was very good read. Not perfect book but one that teaches you how stuff in 40k works and is interesting, I can easily recommend it.

Other ones are also not vidya originally ,but got connected after, Witcher.
Take LoTR and take it from Middle-earth to Poland, you just created Witcher, racism, hate, taxes, it is as Polish as it can be.

I'm pretty sure that anyone on this board who reads VNs is doing more reading on a daily basis than the faggots on /lit/ are. I don't do any vidya related writing, because I have too much /tg/ shit to write about. And I don't read any vidya books because they all strike me as sperg-tier.

That isn't how this works. C0DA is how MK describes a possible end-of-the-world scenario for the TES world, based on the lore that is present. It isn't canon because it isn't guaranteed to happen, and is so far into the future that the TES series is likely to die before reaching that point.

i know who Kirkbride made it so everything that you right in it is canon but it is made by fans thus makes it some what of canonized fanfiction

If you have never read Masters of Doom
pls DO
It's just so fucking good
I don't even read
but that book anons
featuring:

...

Except that's wrong. What Kirkbride was referring to with C0DA was the nature of the TES universe. Every player has a different story from the games, and every event that happens out of the games has at least two or three different groups arguing about what actually happened. The same applies to what is going to happen in the distant future.

The idea is that every person has their own C0DA. The "C0DA" story is what Kirkbride presents as a possible scenario with his versions of the characters, of the heroes, and so forth. But that's coming from his point of view, as one of the many writers and "sides" that are arguing, and it is not set in stone.

In short, his argument is that in a setting like TES, it is impossible to state anything is canon. There are certain events that certainly happened, but they're just pieces floating about that happened in roughly this period in roughly this way. So it's pointless to argue about what is or is not canon, because if you try to set something in stone, it's just going to get changed or altered anyways. It's a higher order of death of the author. It's the murder-suicide-orgy of the multiple authors.

But comrade, socialism IS communism!

stopped reading there, postmodernism is a blight that exists to degrade society

What about Byzantine erotica?

Opinion discarded. For once, I think it's actually appropriate to say go back to >>>Holla Forums.

The halo books by eric nylund are great reads, and get into the nitty gritty of life as a soldier trained from early childhood; w/really deep hard science lore and extremely good character development.

Also, since there are D&D games, the R.A. Salvatore Drizzt Do'Urden books are glorious, and I have fond memories of them from reading them during childhood.
Great worldbuilding, and intertwining of stories of other characters in the settings lore.

Daily reminder that the reason you can't into books is because the jews made you hate them through forcing you to read the most boring ones on high school.

Read an actual scientific paper on a subject and then read a reglamentary high school book about the same subject and see it for yourself.

I keep hearing about tabletop gaming on Holla Forums.

What is this sudden revival of tabletop roleplays.
I mean, I like having someone to play with for a change but it's still weird

I mostly had good teachers, and they almost always gave us a few choices so we could read what we're interested in for my earlier years (primary to middle, and some of highschool).

It's always been a thing on here, but it doesn't always come up unless it's a worldbuilding thread or similar to this effect.

I wish i had a group I could play with IRL, but alas the state I live in is filled with people who have shitty personalities, mainly pop-culture interests, and most are degenerates who I don't want to be associated with

The halo books that were by eric nylund were good. And thats pretty much it there really arent many video game books to begin with let alone good ones.

Some user a while back dumped a mega full of vidya related ebooks and pdfs. I'll see if the mega link still works, if I still have it saved anyhow.

Just checked, looks like it got reported and removed.

Maybe someone in the share thread with them saved could reupload them?

Yeah, that was the other link, here's the new one:
mega:///#F!t1NX3R6J!2NOyIfNuQwch6qNJ-bhkQw

I'm curious. Do it have detailed descriptions of women being eaten by lions and cyclopses?

Maybe like 80% bad stuff but there is some good sides of it like 4th wall breaking , head canons etc…

It ain't worth it.

What i meant is that he did wrote a lot of canon main sieris like the white gold concordat and other things

C0da can effect the canon some times

b but muh MGS2 ;_;

Okay first off
Bullshit

Second off, that isn't our thing. Fuck off.

series*

READ NIGGER READ
or even FUCKING WRITE why not ?

Look, I enjoy a good book like anyone does, but honestly I like vidya better.

If you want to read shit, go to /lit/. We're not going to shift focus because you're jealous, /lit/ doesn't have a fucking entry fee. Just go over there and find shit to read, nigger.

This is SJW subversion bullshit the way you're talking.

/lit/ is ded thats why

k

I will try Crysis novel Peter Watts is a solid writer

Vonnegut is pretty good and Catch-22 is a fucking masterpiece. Some Phillip K Dick is arguably postmodern as well.

Hell most deconstructions fall under postmodernism.

Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown and Michael Graves are all great architects.

The fact of the matter is 90% of everything is shit. That's no reason to write off an entire school even though the current state of it involves producing nothing remotely useful.

On that note, what would be a postmodern video game?

There's a reason it's dead. Because almost no one has interest in it.

You know, that's a bit obvious, but I felt I should point it out.

I can kind of see where he's coming from, though.
Crossboarding is a simple fact of life, and he wants /lit/ to at least stop being dead.
Still, Holla Forums is probably one of the worst boards you could try /lit/ crossboarding with, since the only remotely passable Holla Forums books are generally tie-ins rather than actual discussion on the nature of vidya.

The only thing I wish for is that I knew the things I know sooner

Gone Home.

I was planning on making a thread similar to this one but about this book I recently purchased. It's about the Sega Mega Drive or Genesis for you burgers, essentially a written history of how it came to be and how it marketed their games back in the 90s.

Sorry if this feels like spamming but I'll post some photos I took of it.

Also contains original hardware documents and planning, these are to scale also since it's quite large. There's also a shit ton of stuff that was never released outside of Japan (or at all) such as a VR headset.

A large section includes some promotional material from the early 90s, and damn is it some 90s ass art.

Apparently sonic originally had a girlfriend called Madonna but was scrapped before launching.

And these are the final pics I took unless someone wants some more. At the end there are interviews with the original creators of the Mega Drive, Sonic and some other games. Also a full image of the first Comix Zone stage, one of my favourite vidya.

Postmodern=/=hipster
kys plz
I would say MGS2 , Superhot , undermeme

nice design book nigga

The Master of Orion and Master of Magic strategy guides are very nice vidya books despite their age. Not only breaks down gameplay but also pretty much every major mechanic is broken down into transparent formula. Anyone with free time could easily replicate the feel of those games if they felt like coding everything in.

/lit/ was one of the worst boards on 4chan and I'm glad they didn't carry over here.

Reexamine your life

of Mind? Only good thing he ever wrote.

nah they are good fellas the only problem with them is fucking communism and leftism in general

He is a bad writer but a good philosopher

They were celebrating cop deaths a bit ago because they "enabled the piggies".

That indicates a fundamental flaw that can't just be explained away with bad politics.

I wouldn't say it's dead. We still get some pretty good discussions in every now and then, but you just have to get used to slow, usually thought-out responses. I made a thread about poetry and we shared some great works. I wish /lit/ could have that perfect middle ground of users, but I doubt it'll happen since none of you dumdums read anything past ebin memes.

I don't care about politics i have no interest in leftism but when it comes to philosophy in top 5 boards lolftypol is the only good place to talk about /lit/
Holla Forums is a fuck up Holla Forums and Holla Forums are only about media and Holla Forums is feelz tier philosophy

So much for a thread about vidya books.

Most of them are bad novels and documentary about """"Gaming culture """" like pic
Some of them are about design and nothing about theory or analyzing vidya

get outta here lefty pol, i know about your plan to convert all boards to "socialism"

Only if you like Communist propaganda.

you fond oud my plan Fug :DDDDDD

is this thread/OP serious?

Truly a worthless intellectual type if I've ever seen one.

What good is your mental masturbation if you can't apply it to anything?

Fuck of Camoran. Mehrunes doesn't care about you.

lol leftypol
Well read people are those who would read both Communism Manifesto and Mein Kampft for example and not limit themselves to their own genre which simply enforces their own way of thinking

...

Purge this pic away user
Do it for lord sake

Fuck off gook.
