VA-11 Hall-A

The demo was pretty good, and I'll probably pick it up after I get some dosh that isn't going towards a new computer. I just am a sucker for the cyberpunk setting, really, so I might have a little bias.

The game isn't though

I'm almost through the first playthrough.

Main character suffers from a common main character affliction, "being an unlieable bitch." I guess they at least lampshade this; there are actually quite a few people who call her out on it. Her problems, which come up every now and again, are fairly petty, though, which makes it difficult to really care to the degree they seem to want me to. You broke up with a girl and it didn't end well and now she's dead…that's it? This is a world with an oppressive government bordering on corporatocracy, with riots against the privatized police force being a major story event, and you expect me to give a shit about relationship drama? I guess they were going for a grounded, low-key, mundane problem story juxtaposed against a fantastical world and that's a cool idea, but it would have worked a lot better if I liked the MC at all. And I don't.

It tries too hard to be funny. Characters quip at each other all the time, but it all falls flat. Most of it feels very unnatural and forced. The rest just simply isn't funny.

Several of the characters are good. Stella, the twintail catgirl, the fit policegirl whose name I forget, and the not-Adam Jensen. Everyone else varies. Virgilio is intensely hateable, but that seems to be by design. Dorothy, the loli sex robot, comes off more annoying than likable. Hacker chick is okay, but a little bland. The newspaper guy has his moments. Stream-chan had potential, but so far I've only seen her once. Everyone else is largely forgettable. For how much of a crush the MC has on her boss you'd think she'd have more dialogue, but mostly she's relegated to one or two big scenes. They play coworker Gil off as some mysterious past kind of guy, but that really only works when you write him in a way to make me care about his past, and they didn't. He's the comic relief in a game where nothing is funny.

The game's claim to fame is that you can alter the story by serving people the wrong drinks or getting them drunk, but, since this is my first playthrough, I can't say how much, if anything, actually changes.

The soundtrack's pretty good. There's a lot of variety, and you choose what music plays during the bar scenes, so you probably won't have a problem with that.

The graphics aren't bad, I don't think. They serve their purpose. I kind of like the style. I just have to wonder what the rationale for it was, since the game is set in a very futuristic world.

Overall, I rate it a resounding "meh." I got caught up in the hype and bougt it at release, but based on what I've played I now wouldn't have paid more than $10 for it, and even then only if you're a big fan of VNs.

Anything can seem like shit writting outside of the context of it's original work aside from some good quotes.

Let me just add that the guy is a character that's not simply a target for SJWs either, he's got flaws but also virtues. Other characters describe him as having real leadership skill to get what he wants and at one point they talk about how he once saw potential on the pizza delivery guy and got him on tech support doing maintenance on the servers in only one week.

Yeah, it's pretty good. I got about 13 hours from it. I wasn't too interested in NG+.

Regardless, OP, the game is a fairly entertaining time waste, albeit if you don't like to read then it won't be your thing, as there are no actual choices during the story beside serving drinks or messing them up, the latter being quite hard to do except when Virgilio comes and ask you to serve him a Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster or some shit.

It's straight forward: people talk, you click forward, you serve drink, the end.
There is a bit of character management regarding money but if you only buy the shit you need you won't really have problems like that.

I wouldn't spend money on it as it is more of a story than a game, even the drink making "minigame" it's too simple to be considered gameplay.
