How's the device(s) for emulation/games overall? It'd be pleasant to have an emulation box that's quick to boot to play.
If it beats the PSP in emulation, might be worth making it portable as well.

I wouldn't say the Pi is quick to boot.
Absofuckinglutely not. Don't pay for their brand-name hype. Get a different SBC, and don't support these cunts.
fugg
It'd probably be faster than other shit I've got.
For fuck sake. Thanks user.
Any suggestions?
Easily changed.
Any suggestions?
Unfortunately, I'm not the one to ask, but there's a thread up on Holla Forums right now: >>>Holla Forums590082
...
Forgot to greentext my first line. Oh well.
They are garbage. I tried using one to do simple switching for circuit I made to make sure that a battery overcharge/break a solar panel. The little piece of shit couldn't do it fast enough. Eventually used an arduino and it was 1000x easier and better.
Pis are the apple products of diy electronics
Funny, I've been chastised by Holla Forums for using Arduino with almost those exact words. While it's true that you're paying a huge markup for it, I personally see buying pre-assembled technology as perfectly fine, when it outweighs the time cost of assembly. This isn't the case for Apple products, which are marked up solely for brand recognition. In my case, my goal was learning, and I should have been able to construct it on my own, so they were right.
Also, check pic related.
Wouldnt putting it inside a GBA cad3 be counter productive?
Case*
ew.
Well I don't go on tech, I just no from personal experience. They do perform better as a microcontroller than a pi, but what you just said and posted makes me rethink.
Know*
Personally I use seeeduinos. I find that the Seeeduino 4 is better than the uno because of some minor changes.
I've got a SparkFun RedBoard. It's done what I wanted it to (webm related) but I haven't used it for anything else yet. I should look into other fun projects. Suggestions?
I'm like 99% sure they're an SJW-central too, just look at their instructional videos, Jesus Christ.
I preordered one of the little things when the company was first starting out, before they started any virtue signaling.
I just thought, hey yeah it would be cool to have such a small computer that can support linux and 1080p video playback.
I can't hate what I got because of the stupid shit this company is now saying, but it is absolute that they will never get another penny out of me.
It's pretty surprising how many of these niche tech companies are so quick to bite the hand that feeds them.
Thanks for posting this user, I was just thinking about getting a Pi 3.
I guess I'll go with the ODROID for now
I bought a bunch of 74 series chips and made some basic computer components on a breadboad.
Maybe try something practical through impractical means?
RF/IR controlled window blinds, remote controlled lawnmower, a basket in your mailbox that detects when mail has been delivered and rides a zipline into your house to deliver the mail?
Go crazy man, just look at Honey I Shrunk/Blew up the Kids for inspiration, there's all sorts of ridiculous contraptions in those movies.
I've been wanting to do this, but it's a little more money than I'm wanting to spend at the moment.
This is so fucking dumb that I need it.
Pretty sure banana pi is better.
So what's the best SBC? Got a Raspberry Pi and I hope it's not too late to refund it.
The Orange Pi is more powerful and cheaper.
I dont get it.
Don't get what, their tweet?
Bought one years back, couldn't even watch a fucking 1080p anime, it's like the damn thing couldn't handle an .mkv file. It's useless if you already have a craptop. Unless you're gonna autistically mod it into a mobile device, don't even bother with it.
...
Yeah why should nerd culture die?
Install DietPi. Stock Raspbian shit.
I heard good things about Beagleboards. Never owned one myself through.
Its basically saying "boys shouldnt have their own groups anymore because its too hard for women".
I want a portable little emulation system anons, but perhaps not a RasPi, what are some cheaper/easier/better alternatives?
Dunno man, it's pretty full of flavor of the month faggots and gamur grills
Not that the tweet is pissing on that, they're probably getting on the womyn in tech, stop with the soggy knees
So what do you dorks think about odroid's stuff like the xu4? one quick look into that tech post and I see it's called bloated trash and some guy suggests some fucking huge alternative, but I need me an emulation capable thing of no more than 4 inches wide that can do up to at least n64 for my project
But the thing is, odroid's gooks say it can do that and it has a US supplier
Bump and seconding.
Don't be stupid.
Bump.
Well, there's supposed to be a direct rasPi competitor with a board that is modular for what ports it has, so you could decide whether or not to have a hdmi/vga port, or a usb port, ethernet, etc.
No idea if anything will actually come of it, since it's supposed to be the "7 dollar computer!", but I guess there's also the dragonbox pyra, which is an already assembled mini laptop that could handle the emulation.
Also, check the SBC thread over on >>>Holla Forums
I am also interested on a cheap pocket device that would be able to run retroarch and at least a crt shader.
kickstarter.com
This thing promises a lot for the price, even tough it sucks for PC games and i ve seen people call it the portable ouya, you can't find a comparable tablet with all it says it will feature on that price range, it even has built in dual screens and controls, i can only hope this is not a scam, if it makes it to a store, i will definitively buy it just because it would perform really nice for emulation.
I'm not even from Holla Forums, but holy shit.
It looks cool, but the concept is a little too drastic for that size handheld. Do like the design at least, reminds me of the GPD.
Speaking of which, GPD Win is coming up eventually as well.
Hopefully shit allows you to install Linux instead of using Windows 10.
There is no objective "best" board. It depends on your needs.
Read the words that come immediately after those. It's not common, but it happens. The couple hours I'm going to spend assembling an Arduino equivalent is not with the $15.
NO
NO
Care to share what tiny percentage of the market doesn't fall into these categories?
NO
you can normally find small outfits operating out of their garage and stuff (even locally), go for those guys. ARM is fine
I want to play games on it especially with emulators. I hope to be able to play Gamecube, PS2, and PSP games but I'm not sure if it's possible. I also need to try putting Kodi in it.
Disgusting
While the Orange Pi boards are unsupported by a lot of software companies, they are great for simple small things.
You'd have to do a lot of technical tweaking to get it to run retropie or something though.
I want to use banana pi as an emulation machine using Lakka
But the hardware support says raspberry is better, but the specs says otherwise.
I'm confused
I dont even know whats going on here
This has been spouted by retards almost as long as VR has been "the next big thing."
It's only retarded if you can't do it yourself. At this rate, nobody else is going to.
I bought two CHIPs, 9$ each
It has wifi, bluetooth, 4GB of NAND, a 1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM
Also the drivers for the GPU are still in developement, but for my needs the CPU is enough
It was stuff like this that made me dismiss the product completely.
I have one.
I just use it to play ADOM.
I was going to play open arena on it but the United Kikedom apparently made some law about giving out free software that closed the pi store and I can't find the right version anywhere else.
I'm some basic bitch user who really only cares for vidya, what can I use these things for?
Emulator machines, user.
you can use it to
that sounds fun enough, I'll look into it
What's the best bang for my buck, completely ignoring politics?
I'm studying this at the moment.
In general, the best choice would be an odroid xu4 running the Lakka system, video related.
It's about 75 dollars and runs psp, ps1 and n64 seamlessly, but you don't get above that.
hardkernel.com
If I am wrong, please prove me, it's really hard finding documentation and discussion outside the raspsphere.
Unhappily, odroid is not accessible in my country, I'll probably stick with rpi3 which is the second best one
I got one before they went full SJW, the local government is supporting this commie thing where there's some retarded location that allows people to 3d print for "free" (i.e with taxpayer money) so i told them i was going to print an ergonomic glove to help with my damaged hand and built a gamegirl case instead. Works very well
Ah yes, good to see someone posted it so early.
user
You might as well get your money back.
Muh, Niggertynog, plz:
Rasp3.14 handles 1080 decodes just fine: hackaday.com
That is, provided they aren't HEVC/Hi10p (which is what a lot of anime is, and for good reason). It'll only struggle to play the same formats your smartphone will struggle to play.
That's pretty awesome. I've never dived into rasp-pi or odroid before, what kind of knowledge is required before doing this stuff? Or is it applications you download and install (lakka is the emulator so I guess just a download?)? How does lakka or the OS recognize a controller like in the video? How much do those odroids store for memory to hold games? PS1 games can be GB's in size.
They run linux based operating systems and linux has built in drivers for most console controllers
Hipsters normally use those for their home applications instead of salvaging old PC parts and installing loonix on them, buying those tiny computers for desktop work is just retarded
you won't run into problems unless you're retarded
Personally I when I saw this I decided to buy a BananaPi Pro.
It's great because it has 1Gb of ram, which was more than what they were offering at the time.
Now they have a newer version with more ram and the same chip speed.
The company is called LeMaker
2 works well, but n64 onwards sucks, outside of GBA
a fun little project if you are interested. Definitely but a heatsink for the cpus and if you live in a hot area like I do a fan can help. Make sure you use a proper Pi power cable or it will have brownouts
Buy a wii and put the homebrew channel on it, or just hook up an old $70 pc to your tv with a bluetooth dongle for your ps3/4 controller. The Pi is under-powered shit. Why not use cheaper alternatives. Once you buy all of the peripherals for the Pi it's not really worth it for what you get.
Out of all emulators, never see DS emulators for either the Pi or this.
Device looks great though.
why ?
Really user
...
You answered line 2 in line 1. Virtue Signalling is a way to build social capital.
>not building a better life for yourself
you guys are fucking FAGGOTS
...
You're pretty late to the party there, guy.
What's a good alternative to the Raspberry btw?
This
The two others I'm aware of are Banana Pi and Orange Pi.
That CPU orientation makes me uncomfortable.
Apparently ODROID is the higher-end choice: cnx-software.com
barring n64, waht is the cheapest way to emulate stuff up to 5th gen? Assuming you already have a CRT but nothing else.
whatever board you find cheapest, the cheapest micro sd card and if you don't have the controller already, whatever controller you're willing to buy
most boards should run emulators just fine
Why the fuck would anybody do this? If you want "harsh limitations", get a Gameboy Color and a flash cart, and program your games for that.
Everybody keeps juming for shit like this and the arudinoboy or whatever the fuck it is, and nobody seems to notice that you can still just make your own Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and Gameboy Advance games. Why use a well-known and well-documented system that you can still program for when hipsters have made something intentionally restricted that costs more?
Pico-8 is just a piece of software bundled with the chip though.
You can even get it for PC
lexaloffle.com
That's pretty awesome. I've never dived into rasp-pi or odroid before, what kind of knowledge is required before doing this stuff?
None, just follow the tutorials, it should be as easy as installing any OS
The main feature from lakka is that it auto detects any kind of controller, even pirated ones. It's literally plug and play, but don’t trust me, search it yourself.
How much do those odroids store for memory to hold games? PS1 games can be GB's in size.
Dunno, but you probably will be using SDs as storage, so you better get a good one.
Fucked up the greentext, sorry.
What about Beagleboard, they any good?
I'd say the ODROID-C2 just on the performance/price ratio. But if you want to hook it up to a CRT, The only thing I can remember with A/V connectors was the old Rpi model B+, and that's underpowered as fuck
If you want to emulate on the cheap on a CRT, I'd suggest you get a Wii instead. It has very good emulators for everything up to SNES/Genesis/NeoGeo/CPS1&2. PS1 Emulation is actually decent for some games (I've played Mortal Kombat Triogy and Megaman 8 Just fine) and you actually get some N64 games, plus all of the Wii/Gamecube catalogue.
It should cost about 30 dollars, even less if you buy one with a defective optical drive.
So what's the best single board computer worth getting that's already portable?
I considered the Pi mainly to put it in a Gameboy case. Any other suggestions are welcome especially if I can buy shit already done. I'm a lazy fuck.
Check out my earlier post
It runs a Linux Debian variant, so emulation isn't a problem. It's a bit bulky and not as powerful as the more popular SBC, but it's portable out of the box.
if you are a beginner just go raspberry; there are plenty of guides and you will not bite off more than you can chew.
Isn't Arduino way superior to Pi anyways?
Can't really compare them. Arduino makes microcontrollers, not SCB.
WHY DO PEOPLE BUY THESE? Its as bad as fucking Nintendos mini box shit. You can buy a laptop for what? 300$ and under? and be able too emulate nes,snes,segamegadrive/genesis,n64,turbo16,atari,ps1,gamecube EVEN the Wii. That laptop will have easy ass hdmi hook up and power. Whats that? Thats RIGHT! Mod the controllers you want, none of that cheap china shit. Done!
Im gonna back behind the fucking couch.
Because an RPi costs 10x less?
Because laptops are bulky and expensive in comparison. There are also some of us who like tinkering as well as playing games.
My skills at making a portable are shit anyway since never done it, and really don't believe I could manage anyway. Seems the UX4 mentioned would be the best shit for just an all around emulation box.
Shame really. I can never find fucking anything to replace my PSP-1000.
The main enjoyment I get from these is the drawn-out battle to get them working. I love spending a friday night tinkering, waking up saturday to a room full of wires and parts, and then going right back at it. Put on some 80s cyberpunk music, chiptune soundtracks, or 90s midi music, and you're in cyberpunk heaven. It's therapeutic.
