Are there any real big leftist movements the Aussies support?

Most of us are pretty centre to left/ right. Chances are that if you're far right or far left you'll be viewed as a shit cunt.

ANTI-FA and a few socialist parties is what I can think of tbh.

Camden Hughes

Any chance they could get bigger.

Greens are popular right?

David Jackson
David Jackson

Nah, people seem to agree that there is something wrong but the most revolutionary they are willing to go is vote for Labor or the Greens party. One is a centre right "we'll get around to guy marriage eventually guys!" puppet show and the other is what you would expect.

We had the Liberal party (the far right authoritarians that were willing to let people die because they thought healthcare was a communist conspiracy) for something like 20 years before we realised "oh yeah, two party system" and voted in Gough Witlam who got immiedatly fucked by the Queen.

Australians are really a-political - Most frankly don't give a shit and vote on fringe issues.
Australians have very high standards of living are in a social democracy type of state - they have no reason to revolt for either way.
Australia is a mix between Neo-Liberalism and social democracy

William Mitchell

Australia recently brought in US style "terrorism" laws where you can be detained indefinitely without trial on suspicion of "terrorism". Unions are dying out or becoming corrupted. The right wing is gaining support based on anti-foreigner sentiment. Patriotism and hatred of being "un-Australian" is creeping into normal culture. The only 'socialist' group near me has anti-racism and anti-patriarchy in their manifesto, but nothing to do with worker control of the means of production.

Still a better place to live than most of the world.

Jaxon White
Jaxon White

State user?
Also, the terrorism laws are bullshit I agree.
Unions are dying out in membership because people think/are brainwashed into believing they do not require protection.

I'm in the Socialist Party. Part of the CWI.

Housing bubble should pop soon that'll shake things up I hope.

Unions are dying atm for sure. It doesn't help when the leadership of most is so terrible though. Take the CUB despute for example. They didn't even establish a picket line.

There are three notable parties on the Australian Far left.

Socialist Alliance, Socialist Alternative, and Socialist Equality.

First of all Socialist Alternative are the absolute worse. If you go to uni the obnoxious socialist students that are always annoying people are no doubt SAlt. They publish the magazine Red Flag.

Then there's Socialist Alliance, probably the most prominent leftist party. It's fairly typical of the modern far left, that is it's fairly focused on social justice. If you can put that aside they're not too bad. They're behind the magazine Green Left Weekly

Then there is Socialist Equality, the least SJW of the lot. They're trots (officially) but that doesn't stop them being a mouthpiece for the PRC. They're associated with the WSWS.

Pretty much all the Marxist groups here are shit / trots

SAlt
is the biggest radleft group in Aus, its a conjunction between Guevaristas and Cliffite trots. Their ideology is a patchwork garble, they are dominated by University """Politics""" and are generally directionless. They deserve credit for organizing Marxism every year and their (very minor) union activism which has been focused on splitting the Shoppies and organizing a wildcat.

SEP

Aus branch for the Healyite trots (ICFI), they've done nothing notable except being affiliated with WSWS; they are basically viewed as a joke. Hate you for reading anything except Marx, Lenin or Trotsky.

Socialist Party

CWI affiliated OrthoTrots, currently in a tailspin after rape allegations / defection and smear campaign by the most prominent clique.

Solidarity

IMT in Aus, ideologically better than the rest but its basically a reading group

Sparts

More Trots and the goofiest of the lot

CPA

Stalinist garble that is still lingering from last century, its pretty much a husk. They have a youth wing supposedly but never seen 'em around.

Radical Feminists (or something like that)

Their members are actually pretty cool but they don't really do anything but run some hairdresser co-op / bookstore

For the anarchists

MACG

Ancoms / Antifa / general anarchist mashup; small but good.

Anarchist Affinity

Platformists; also decent but needlessly sectarian

IWW

Pretty ded but it attracts decent people; has the unionist focused anarchists / syndies

A shitton of small anarchist groups

The anarchist scene is generally more fractious so you need to look deeper into it to get a better idea. Lots of tiny bookshops / groups / unions doing their own thing.

I'm trying to get some sort of Left Communist / Autonomist / Zizek, Badiou, Laruelle etc. study group set up as a stepping stone to something more resembling a party but Marxism in Aus is a rotting carcass ATM

Also

Socialist Alliance are reformist liberals, don't get sucked in.

They pussied out on the mining tax, which wasn't all that robust to begin with; and now the mining boom is dead and the money with it. Fucking shameful. Not to mention they brought back the pacific solution.

None of them, really. I checked out Socialist Equality because the others were too comfortably IDPOL. SEP haven't got much going for them, they're dogmatic Trots for whom every left theorist after Trotsky is basically a revisionist who abandoned the working class.

Everything happens "unanimously", there seems to be no internal debate from attending their meetings, and their method of recruitment is to corner people and talk them into joining. They have no theoretical journal and they don't run workshops or anything. All the thinking is done for you.

Fucking sad but true.

Carson Peterson

becoming corrupted

Only the SDA really.

The reason the CFMEU are targeted so much is because they are a big Trotskyist Militant Union. If you look at most "CFMEU Corruption", it's just the CFMEU giving Howard's anti-Union laws from the 2000s a middle finger and engaging in industrial action without going through the bullshit several week long processes.

Seriously, if workers get killed on site here in Australia for blatant poor safety reasons, you still legally are not allowed to walk off the job and engage in industrial action. It's fucking bullshit.

Juan Stewart

For a long time i've been thinking of starting a Socialist party that would run for council/legislative assembly/state seats, but I've never had the capital enough to organize it.

I would run basically on the platform of Cooperative worker businesses. More specifically, promising to set up regional development banks that invest into local cooperative being set up by workers, or help workers buy any business they work for, that is being sold.

The slogan through elections would be something simple like "You work it, you own it", "profits back to workers", things that would peak the interest of average joe, while letter bombing addresses with pamphlets that explain in slightly more detail how cooperatives function and why they are in the best interest of workers.

Money used from votes would be then invested into a "Youth organization" that is explicitly barred from bullshit Uni politics. the job of the Youth organization would be to provide charity work to the homeless, poverty stricken etc. Running food vans etc. This gives the party a good name recognition among the public and allows us Socialists to draw the poor away from the church and religious groups who prey on the poverty stricken. Dual power is one of the single most important tactics of a Socialist organization.

Inside the party, personally, I would want to see Socialist strain discussion banned, no fucking Trotsky shit, no M-L shit, no Third Worldism etc. If anything I personally believe a new Socialist school of thought must be developed for the material conditions of the 21st century.

Oh also no pandering to anti-vaxx, homeopathy, greenleftyweekly anti-GMO types. It will be a party of science and progress.

Currently for me sadly, I have literally no access to capital. Industrial accident last year threw me out of work and I have a few hundred dollars to my name. As soon as I get back into work though, I'll probably start putting funding away saving for an election to register the party and get someone who isn't me to run (I've too much baggage that can be pulled up through internet archive)

just admit Australia has potential to introduce socialist reforms based on nationalist sentiment

Vote labour, they know their shit.
You wanna know how politics works in Australia?
Liberals get in, increase taxes and do nothing
Labour comes in, promises to do better, spends too much money on too much worthless shit and fucks things up
Liberals come back in, increase taxes and repeal Labours socialist reforms because they cost too much
rinse and repeat

because people think/are brainwashed into believing they do not require protection.
also because Union fees are through the roof and Unions are fully coopted by interest groups

Marxism in Australia is associated with that neckbearded problem glasses gender fluid autist in the corner who doesnt drink and is too ugly to fuck

the best party in Australia to vote for is the Liberal Democrats if you vote anything else you support the SJW's and you might as well dye your hair pink, gain 60 kgs and buy a dragon dildo
