empires replaces story with basic 4x gameplay and xtreme legends is an expansion meant to be played with main game (in case of 8, if you only buy xtreme legends without main game you can only play lubu campaign and a few bonus missions for each other faction, and all the new game modes introduced with XL)

Empires is more along the line of role-playing instead of the story the main series gives you. You can rule a kingdom of your own or serve under a general. Battles are more "tactical" I use quotes for the word since it just ends up you using a couple of battle modifiers like fire arrows and the like to set enemy bases on fire, demoralize/hurt troops etc…

Extreme Legends is sort of an side-story expansion.

The Three Kingdoms is super awesome, I actually watched a 95 episode series that I got off kick-ass that follows the book very closely.

Shu was the best kingdom, but all 3 kingdoms had tragic flaws that ultimately prevented unification.

You start off making a peasent character and you pick any of the characters to serve under, after the first fight they give you their weapon and you can level up combos and shit and they really like or hate you depending on how good you did in a level and eventually you get promoted up to their bodyguard or like a secondary officer with your own army, and from what I remember serving each character had it's own ending(though I can't recall if it was unique or not)

Also how's the PC port on DW8?

It sounds like something from Empires to be honest, however I never did play 5 only 4/6/7 so I don't know if they ended up putting in a game mode like that and I last played 7 like 5 years ago so I can't remember if any of the others had something like that.

I know in 7 (I think) they had something called conquest mode where you roamed around China talking to all the major, and minor main characters in the series and fought with them. But I'm pretty sure you could only play as the main characters and couldn't create your own.

No idea about DW8 PC.

Swap Wu and Shu's positions for me since Shu actually has people worth a damn that aren't Pang Tong to play as now but in the process Pang Tong is pretty bad now and I can only think of really three or four Shu characters that left an impression on me (hilariously at least one or two of them were potential Wei recruits or were in Wei at one point or another), meanwhile I couldn't find a character that flat-out bored me in Wu besides the crossbow girl because projectile weapons in musou games are garbage 95% of the time.

Cao Cao's always been my favorite for the voice if nothing else but I like that they've established something of a duality between Liu Bei and Cao Cao as optimistic idealism and heroism vs. ruthless practicality and meritocracy. They're both good leaders but Cao Cao's not quite so starry-eyed.

Though as far as story goes it always seemed like Wu was just kind of there.

Xiahou Dun is the first character I ever played, mained him ever since and Wei is my favorite kingdom, but I like Zhao Yun's movesets and in DW8E I basically always play Zhao Yun with the RotK costume(because I love the more grounded costumes and a white and blue army looks amazing), fuck Shu though.

Zhao Yun for me, he's been a favourite since I first played him in DW2.

Lu Bu is second because I have a soft spot for badass guys that fight for the sake of fighting.

Dynasty warriors 5 for pc is nippon only.
You'll have a lot more luck just emulating the ps2 one.
However, the destiny mode is only in the extreme legends version and story mode is only in the basic version.

DW7 is a great entry point, but unfortunately it's the last good DW so your only path from there is backwards.

Vanilla 8 is where the franchise jumped the shark and became pure shit. More moves, more characters, more mobility options, but the AI is pants on head retarded, the game balance is complete shit, and the difficulty is nonexistent. It's a flashy button-masher that punishes skillful play and has zero mechanical depth. AI will stand around and do nothing but occasionally block to waste your time, and will only fight back with an (invincible and uninterruptable) Musou attack if you dare to go for an actual combo. No, seriously, the AI is hardcoded to ALWAYS do a Musou attack if you juggle them for more than 9 hits. They're otherwise completely passive, so you just mash buttons and win.

5 has the most content, best XL expansion, and most robust Empires mode, but 7 has the better combat mechanics, more diverse movesets, and hype (but very content-barren) story mode. Pick your poison.

The DW5 mode you were talking about was likely the Xtreme Legends expansion.

DWG3 runs off Dynasty Warriors 8 as a base, so it's piss-easy and lacks any meaningful depth.

Forgot my embed. Might as well add in that while DW8 is complete shit, it has some of the best music. The overtures and themes for each kingdom, culminating in a rocking rendition of all three combined for The Battle of Chi Bi, is fucking amazing. Embed related.

XL has all of the same problems. They only thing they fixed was making the break attacks manual and nerfing their damage, but even that doesn't change the shitty weapon triangle system. Hilariously, they tried to patch out the Cyclone instant kills, but managed to make it even more powerful. For context, Cyclone is a weapon enhancement that allows you to do damage through a guard. The damage buff is so large that you end up doing more damage to blocking enemies than if they weren't blocking at all, and since that's the only thing the AI does you can see how easily it snaps the game in half.

I played a game from this series once but didn't understand anything. I don't think there was a campaign or anything. I started as Zhuge Liang, trying to form my kingdom I think. Combat was stupidly easy, I was simply going against hundreds of man and killing everyone in seconds. Everything in game felt weird for some reason and I felt retarded
