Played Morrowind recently. Took a while for me to get into, since I'm so used to modern "instafun" bullshit with a depth of a puddle.
Appreciated it a lot. Had fun. Remembered why as a kid I looked at games and couldn't even fathom ever being close to being able to work in videogame development, thinking that making games is basically magic. (Studying IT right now, old dream is withered and battered but still alive)
But I'm slowly losing hope. I see games getting worse and worse over time, and have for a very long time. From Morrowind to Oblivion, from Oblivion to Skyrim. From Doom, to Doom 3, to NuDoom. From FEAR, to FEAR 2, to F3AR.
The general "meta" of games seems to be going down the shitter in a very similar way. I know, it's AAA, but they are kind of the trend setters here, and always have been.
Do I still have hope to create things I love, and live my old dream of indulging in the closest thing I have left to passion?
Tell me how it is, Holla Forums

You don't need to "work" in video games. You can do it as a hobby.
William White
Just like make a game that's not low effort crap
Josiah Robinson
The technical ability and skills behind making a game have increased a lot, but the actual depth of gaming mechanics has gone to shit. Developers don't even try anymore, they just throw whatever stupid ideas the team comes up with into the game and don't fix any balancing issues because they spent all the dev time on making lens flare.
Ryan Long
You mean what the corporate pinheads come up with.
Bentley Baker
F3AR is a top tier game Have you even played it? The only reason autists hate it is because it is a huge departure from the first one and "not horror"
Carson Cox
Your best hope is being an indie dev. The video game industry is NOT for people who love video games. It is like a factory job, you will work crazy long hours, you will be assigned to work on asinine details, and you will give zero creative input. Nowadays games are just shit out as fast as possible, with minimal playtesting. The only talent major studios are looking for is in the advertising department.
I don't mean to shit on your dreams, I'm becoming a 3D modeller for the same reason. Good luck finding your niche.
Sebastian Peterson
I have played it. It feels slow, restricting, clunky and convoluted. To top it off, it's a shitty retcon of the way Point Man looks and acts. Which is, what, again? Oh, right. It's supposed to be you. A silent fucking protagonist without a face.

I put my hopes in free, open source games. Right now the way development is going, especially in industry, the budgets are extremely high, so reasonably to make a return they must sell to as many people possible, even if the game itself suffers in thoughtfulness.
I think we're all familiar with series going in the wrong direction. But with the FOSS, if you don't like something, you could fork it, and you wouldn't have to stick the changes developers' impose.
As far as I can tell, the graphics aren't going to be as amazing as the higher budget games, but the detail and quality is somewhere else like user experience and customization.
Jason Bell
I tried playing Hitman Blood Money the other day. The difficulty was like a brick wall. I was so humiliated that I had no clue what I should be doing. Video games have become basically AAA cutscene movies with linear progression. A waypoint marker is no different than just selecting Next Scene on the DVD menu. Or video games end up being the exact same open world co-op customization or cover shooter. Everything has to be like everything else or else it won't sell as well as everything else. Everything needs to sell 5 million copies or it's a finnancial failure and it won't see a sequel. No one's taking risks anymore. I just want a game worth 60 dollars.
Angel Reed
videogame making is a business now, the kikes running it realized that its better to make a shitty skin that you can sell for 0,99$ a million times than making a worthwhile product that takes a year of hard work from a team of people and sell 100,000 copies at 60$.
its the same that happened to movies really. and its the same that will happen to whatever comes after.
Henry Jones
Morrowind made me feel fucking retarded at first when I had to follow directions in the journal instead of a quest marker, but it increased immersion tenfold.
It's horrible how much everything is dumbed down nowadays.
Ayden Sanders
And the tools to compensate for those that don't have that skill exist, I ain't talking Unity either. Those skills aren't really the true bottleneck or barrier of entry anyways. The key thing in game development is patience, everyone goes in gung ho thinking it'll be a breeze until they start and realize how much work and effort has to be put into it. Even simple shit with the most basic stuff needs careful thought, trial and error, and planning put in to make anything remotely resemlbing a complete game that isn't just a mobile "press button by a timed interval" type games. The more original assets you need to make yourself the more effort you must put in exponentially is pretty big bottleneck the programming itself is the easiest part to learn, get in to, and complete since a lot of that can be taught /or learned in a few months then it's just a matter of applying it.
Joseph Russell
I think the biggest travesty is how dumbed down thief was. I mean, the first two thief games were so damn great because you only could use your wits to save you. Lockpicking a door when a guard was coming to hide inside was so damn satisfying. Then the third and fourth games came out which ruined that.
Jaxon Gomez
lol
Dylan Myers
Third wasn't as good but it wasn't a horrible game. It was still fun to game. It shouldn't be lumped together with the horrific atrocity that was the fourth.
Nathan Smith
They're anything but. They deliberately cater to the mass market and they've been very successful in doing so.
Brody Baker
I did like the third one too, but it was the one game that made me see how the industry was dumbing down and consolizing so it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. The only game that comes close to me in terms of stealth games in comparison to thief was styx, but even then it suffered from a lack of utility items in place of the occassional power you probably would not use unless forced.
Isaiah Brown
No. We've reached past the point of no return. Gaming is too popular. Every soulless fuck looking to make an easy buck is pumping out games, and because of gaming's popularity there are too many vapid casual fucks to let the practice devour itself.
It's also facing a similar problem as teaching art. Everyone who matters is leaving, or being smothered by corporate. There's no one to teach how to make an actually good game, and the small bastion of enthusiast and flashes of lightning aren't enough.
Ryan Harris
There's nothing wrong with arena shooters but I wish there were more to floss games than them.
Zachary Roberts
I figured there's a bunch of others too but are in development. Primarily I saw floss games as open source remakes of existing old games like openMW, freeablo, etc where you needed the original game data as a prereq.
Jason Gray
The worst part too is that we really never see any new genres being formed or genre combinations being tried. We see the same stale gameplay no matter what game. There is also how most game coming out seem to have artificial depth or freedom. A lot of games will present a player with choices that do not amount to anything. Weapons all feel the same and are there to be there. Quests are the same. etc.
Luke Sanchez
No the IQ of the population will get lower and lower and as western civilization dies the culture will get more and more primitive until playing dwarf fortress might as well mean that you're a genius.
After the day of the rope and the collapse vidya might get better again.
Isaiah Harris
When the market crashes and burns, and companies eventually have to actually apply effort to their games again, yes.
Until then. No. Make your own game or play old games.
John Gonzalez
Some are still fucking great. Play those great games and let the others eventually die.
Alexander Evans
Have you tried not looking exclusively at AAA video games? Tell me OP what kind of video games you like to play, perhaps I could recommend something and get Comiket guy here to cheer people up
Zachary Green
This. This right here. We a re the problem. We have nobody to blame. It's demand and supply. Nobody wants good games, nobody paying that is.
Nathaniel Morales
Well indie games (some of them) are actually fun. And if you are buying games, they're not normally 60 bucks.
AAA gaming has, it feels like, never been worse. But that's a lot to do with the fact that games are a massive market now.
It'll crash. Maybe not badly, but there will be more emphasis on distribution. As bad as steam is, it's a closer model to a solution than new gen consoles and kickstarting.
Just play what makes you feel good, don't buy into the hype, remember online multiplayer is cancerous and don't drink Kool Aid.
Blake Hughes
On most games, but there are still good multiplayer games. Like Splatoon.
Ryder Perry
not if you dont try
Gavin Sanders
Yup, that's a great exception user.
Aiden Clark
wtf is this gay thread? Take your faggotry and leave this place
Hudson Watson
Currently, the video game industry is total shit. The best thing to do right now is just make a huge ass list of all the good games that you have missed on. I knew jackshit about RTS until I saw the RTS thread. I thought Starcraft 2 was the top shit Though it is good, its bar is lower compared to the rest simply because it is the only mainstream RTS now, I guess.
It blew my mind to know that games like pic related exist. I got really pissed as to how I missed such a great gem.
Searching for good games in this age is like looking through a pile of shit to find a hidden gem. It is all a test of patience. Meanwhile, we still get good games like Bloodborne, Splatoon, W101. It is just that they are overshadowed by the dozens of shit games.
