Well if you want a couple of reasons not to upgrade here they are.

Lots of things are still not supported, my dad was unable to get his camera to connect when he upgraded he reverted last I checked so it makes editing his photos impossible, stories are running around about people's graphics cards being unsupported as well. The general message is that Win10 has shit all support for devices.

There is a "feature" that will share you local networks wireless access info between windows 10 computers at your location, it can be disabled like a lot of the other data tracking things but it just shows how fucked up Microsoft's idea of a secure OS and network is.

Don't do it, if you can't upgrade to 8.1 which has performance and searching improvements a much nicer task manager then 10 or 7, up to you. Stick to 7 or if the games you play are linux supported switch.

The reason Valve is pushing OpenGL/Vulkan Hard is also in part that the majority of Asia never upgraded past XP. Microsoft deliberately ties directx so close to the Windows (started with Vista) in an attempt to force more of the market to upgrade.

Linux. I already switched. Devs hardly ever bother testing their shit for Linux, much less optimizing for it, so most games run like ass and have plethora of absurd bugs. Most the time there's a workaround for that though. But that's only for games that have Linux support to begin with. On the plus side, you can run many games in Wine and as far as running old games goes, Wine is actually doing better job than Windows.

But don't worry. If W10 gonna tank and people switch to SteamOS or regular Linux, devs will start care and Linux gaming will flourish. I think there are good odds of it, since most people only run W10 because it was free at the time.

This is a feeling so easily forgotten with Windows 7 and later OS. Recently reinstalled an XP box, having to comb through all sorts of forums to find someone linking to the drivers I needed just feels so retro.

That's one of the things i really liked when i tried Xubuntu, it usually handles drivers pretty good. On the downside, it would suffer from stupid minor issues like not remembering brightness settings and things like that which couldn't be fixed through GUI, instead you'd have to make a script to set brightness to a certain percentage on boot (i understand other OS do something similar in practice, but for Xubuntu to fail at something that seems so basic baffles me; maybe they fixed it now but i dunno)

This is probably why I stick to distros with stupidly low entry barriers. I use Linux like a ratchet. Not useful for much I may do, but the perfect tool for a few specific tasks.

MPC for example has built-in web interface for remote control (so i can enjoy watching shit while being comfy in my bed) but MPV which might be technically superior doesn't have that feature. Or FMD, which takes cares almost seamlessly of my manga.

So while im willing to use GPU Passthrough for games in the near future whenever i switch back to Linux, i'd like to have the confidence that there will be a good enough suite of applications for working mostly in the Linux environment, and emulate Windows more as an exception than as the norm.

There's no contest in this area, it's mostly user-level stuff that's still lacking, although much progress has been made in this front.

It doesn't make sense to keep an applications list in the bottom bar if your every application resides on its own workspace, as shown in screenshot. If you need to switch between programs, you switch workspaces. Visual Studio is bloated as fuck, but it's easily the best IDE for C++ programming. Alternatively, look up juci++. It's very lightweight and not bloated to hell. The only downside is that on windows you'll probably have to set up mingw and all that garbage so it might not be worth it.

Honestly I don't know why people torture themselves writing C/C++ on windows, you'd be better off installing a small linux distro on the side and doing your programming on that.

Use gcc or clang they actually support modern standards of C/C++, work on way more platforms than Microsoft could even dream of, and there are IDEs if you really need them. But most people use Makefiles or some framework to generate them like autotools or cmake.

yeah, that probably cant be argued against. but with a few extensions its easy and fast enough to use and ive grown pretty fond of it. i have used xfce before. then i3. then tried gnome 3 out of curiosity and have been using it since.
