Trump was obviously Clinton's plant as he was even called their preferred 'Pied Piper' candidate that would lead the Republican electorate to drown in an extremist river. I think Alan Moore (?) said it best in that conspiracies make events or major societal changes beyond comprehension more comforting.
Just like it's easier believing that a child with cancer is part of God's mysterious plans, it's easier to believe there's a secret cabal co-coordinating affairs behind the scenes, i.e. 9/11 being organised by the US government as opposed to the thought that a handful of Middle Easterners could get around sophisticated security/anti-hijacking measures

My guess is that conspiracy theories have actually gained in popularity as the world became more complex and confusing. Before the targets were on display, now we don't believe politicians are in control anymore, so people think there must be someone behind the curtain.
