IIRC a guy wrote a book about how on average a typical person commits what could be classified as 4 felony crimes either a day or a week (probably a week), without even realizing it. Data science is still developing as an academic discipline and many problems get solved each year which means the amount of things you can do with huge data sets like the one facebook has is increasing. It's an invaluable tool for commercial companies and governments to make proper policy since the data set can tell a lot of what you need to do.

Facebook isn't like myspace at all. When myspace was around stuff like data science and data mining was in its infant stages and the data it gathered was not useable by anyone. It's a lot different for facebook.
