It's a vague and stupid term that means nothing. It should be either "a game that relies on memes for either humor or narrative" or "a game that has no real merit beyond being itself a meme". Instead, here it means "game that is liked by people I don't like".

At this point, buzzword has become a buzzword in and of itself.

I felt that goat simulator was a heavy meme game, and i use that as a bench mark for meme games.

The first one. Tumblrtale's writing is mostly "internet culture" crystalized. Skeletons and skeleton puns, characters talking about anime with implications of how dorky it is, a character that is pretty much the stereotype of a tumblr user that bitches about having a panic attack whenever they try to do anything. And furries, of course.

The term was meant to refer to games which relied on meme references as a form of humour. Which is shit writing of course.

However people would use the phrase to describe games which was the origin of said memes (such as portal or undertale) and instead of admitting that they are retarded they tried to change what the phrase meant so that anything that happened to create memes became a "meme game".

Which is stupid because it's essentially criticising a game for trying to have quotable lines or dialog. And claiming that said games rely on it is backwards. Games don't become popular because they start memes. They start memes because they become popular.

Most meme games have a silly premise (yandere sim, goat sim) where the actual game doesnt matter at all, what matters is what the game describes itself as. Noone really wants to play goat sim, but they find the idea of a goat sim funny, so it becomes a meme based on its premise.

Lots of people within the community talk about it and it is far more popular than many better games, so people say that it's a meme game since the only reason people play it is because other people in the community are playing it. These games can still be good, some of my favorite games are meme games on this board like Dragon's Dogma, Dark Souls, Shitran Kagaya, EYE, DOOM 1/2, Pathologic, Of course proper meme games are also bad or almost entirely worse than a particular alternative such as Serious Sam, Demon's Souls, Republic Commando, or any Sonic game ever (the only ones out of those that are straight up bad are the Sonic games).
