I really ought to replay TTYD sometime. Played Paper Mario 64 a while back and it was pretty fun, but I've been thinking about giving them a go in order, since I started with TTYD some years ago borrowing a friend's copy.
Apparently it's going to just be action-adventure since Nintendo seemingly doesn't want two RPG themed Mario subseries anymore.

If the writing and most of the gameplay was intact, would you care if it wasn't a Mario game? Like, does it need the Mario setting to work, given some of the best characters are originals like Rawk Hawk, Doo_liss, Vivian, and of course the many Doogans? Similarly, would you care if it didn't rely on the paper aesthetic? Like, if it was just a 3D platformer with RPG battles, I guess.
I ask because clearly Sticker Star and Color Splash keep the Mario and paper elements but throw out the rest. On the other hand, Super Paper Mario manages to keep most of the writing in tact but throws out the gameplay. I just wonder if it's the whole thing together, or what.

The unique character designs were always a fun part to me, which is why the generic everything in SS and CS is so annoying, but it wouldn't be a dealbreaker if the Gameplay was the same, which it wasn't
unfortunately the only thing close to a PM game recently was South Park The Stick of Truth, and even then, the gameplay was only nominally similar.

Anything with mario is familiar enough for almost anyone to be willing to try at least once. Honestly there's probably a dozen anime games that are like paper mario and just as good, but I doubt I would even bother playing them.
It's hard to get invested into a story within an unfamiliar universe, because you have to understand everything about it first.
