What's the best story ever told in an electronic game?

my peenus weanus :)

Tetris.

...

...

Prove me wrong.

Im going to answer this seriously and say "shin megami tensei strange journey".

best shit

Hide user, I implore you-kudasai!

They would only say that had i brought up persona 3/4.

...

Did somebody say Persona 4?

In order to avoid another "let's fellate Planescape Torment" thread, I present a game from glorious Nippon with stellar writing, especially the thousand years of dreams stories.

By the way, nice trip, faggot.

The first two MGS games had pretty good stories, at least in my opinion.

max payne 1-2

Red Dead tucked my heartstrings

Probably Mighty Number 5.6

KOTOR 1's evil storyline is still one of my favorites.

What do you mean by best?
I'm pretty fond of Katamari's stories. They're fun as hell.

TETRIS
TELL GOOD STORY OF HOW INSURMOUNTABLE PRESSURE IS UNABLE TO BE STOPPED BY COMMUNISM ONLY BEING DEFEAT BY BETTER IDEA OF CAPITALISM AND BETTER GAME.

...

Ah Suikoden 2. One of those rare gems early on in a mediocre series that raises your hopes and makes you think that the rest are going to get even better but shits all over you with nothing but trash afterwards.

Deus Ex.

Clever stuff.

Purseowne4 amirite?

Cult game, people call it the golden age of jrpgs but truthfully jrpgs never had a golden age in the West.

The only jrpg most people have ever played is FF7 and maybe 10. Even Suikoden 2 didn't top 1 million and that includes Japan itself.

I'm playing Suikoden 2 for the first time (just got the castle) and it's very charming.

last cutscene, because it's fucking cool

Is FF9 also a typical answer?
Does Crystal Chronicles count?
I think I may have never played a Jrpg vefore

i don't know about "best story ever told" but the story in shadow hearts covenant was fucking awesome

just grounded enough in reality to make sense and be somewhat feasible, just fucked up and weird enough to be japanese

You can't

NieR definitely isn't the best but it's my personal favorite.

This

Thank you so much for this

Holy shit my sides. This video reminds me of content from when the internet was good

Video game writing is all fucking awful.

this
I don't think i've ever played a game that had a story good enough to justify playing it.

Video Games are not respected enough as a "art form" to attract the truly talented writers. We usually get the rejects from other mediums, and it shows.

A good story for me is one completely bat-shit insane. Like deadly premonition, or smt, or nier.

...

I'll finish it one day

Fuck off, tripfag.

No, we get retards like you who think the art in video games comes from writing, it fucking doesn't, video games are art. Just not for the reasons cancerous twats like you think they are. We get writer rejects from Hollywood because shitty game companies realize they can buy off game reviewers to lower game writing standards so shitty hacks can make a quick buck off of bad writing

eh, i don't think they're rejects from other mediums. They're just "rejects" in general. I also don't think most stories written in general are worth consuming though. I watch anime and play games for other reason's. Occasionally an anime like Shin sekai yori, or a game like Nier comes along which breaks the mold. They're incredibly rare though, and probably the product of a mans accidental genius or madness.

Shin sekai's an adaptation from a novel.

We were specifically discussing the writing in video games. I think vidya is as much "art" as any other medium. Talented writers tend to be rather snobbish about where and how they ply their trade. All writers are when you get down to it but the ones who are good and know it are even more insufferable about what they consider slumming. Notice I say they consider it to be so.

I agree that most are far less talented than they like to believe or write schlock because schlock sells. There are a great many who write for vidya who have washed out of other mediums. Check into their prior work if you like, you would be surprised.

Fuck off tripfag. Filtered.

Faggots, the lot of you.

SUMMON NIGHT SCS

Morrowind's, because it makes use of the fact that it is a video game in its story by taking full advantage of its setting and some strange meta shit whenever CHIM gets involved.

It's obviously not a linear story at all, but the main story explores both the religious history and current political affairs of the continent, both of which the player will slowly learn about as they play no matter where they go. Doing some random side quest halfway across the continent might provide some context for what you're doing in the main quest somewhere else, and the gameplay is also deeply woven into the story. The history of the religion is about mortals that became godlike, the continent was made by the corpse of a god, there is quite a bit of political tension over disputes about what counts as a real god (tribunal vs daedric worhsippers vs priests of the nine), and the gameplay is the best example of any game I've played where the player starts out as a useless schmuck who can barely fight mudcrabs and throughout the game becomes completely godlike, capable of leaping over mountains and one shotting the most powerful creatures. Also, in order to get anything done in the game you actually have to pay attention to the writing. There is no glowy quest marker telling you how to get to the linear cave full of bad dudes to kill, you have to follow written instructions that require you to pay attention to the world and talk to people in order to get anywhere.

Its plot is also a nice twist on the traditional prophecy story since it is ambiguous whether you are actually fulfilling an ancient prophecy or you are just in the right place at the right time.

Not only can I not think of a more interesting video game plot than that of Morrowind's, but I also can't think of a better setting or relationship between the writing and the gameplay (and yes I know the combat is shit).

Legacy of Kain

god damnit

most animes are adaptations from manga or novels

Life is Strange, of course

Hmm time to find a new website to hang out at.

FFT started off good but then it was demons and got all generic.

Grezzo 2.
It really is a magical adventure.

...

I think Minecraft has one of the most pretentious endings I've ever seen in a video game.

...

the side stories had stellar writing. The part with his daughter is great and the rest is average.

Pic related obviously

That was fucking amazing

sauce?

Legacy of Kain

the story of liru happening

these funny bastards make all sorts of videos.
watch your head, theres memes flying all over the place in the beginning.

I played it, so how many years exactly did you guys wait for like four different scenes that last a few minutes? Quite disappointing.

0, i got other shit to do than wait on porn. but its the story of coming back from the dead that makes it special.

These meme cowboys have good taste in music.

Commander Gore is a hero.
