At one point in Shadow Hearts Covenant, Yuri remarks about the Man Festival "You can't be serious… Not in such a pure, clean, mega-hit RPG as this…!" Normally I might write that off as the translator having a bit of fun, but since the series on the whole loves being cheeky, I expect the original Japanese line also has him taking the piss, since the series is anything but pure and clean (the entire Man Festival, for example), and not even all that popular in Japan either if I've heard right (and out here it's pretty much just a cult classic). Hell, the devs even ragged on their publisher in the game itself, having an equip for Yoachim that's essentially a miniature of their publisher's office building (complete with their logo being partially visible at the top) and described as being filled with tiny, angry people. I suppose one would have to double check the Japanese line for it though to be certain though.

Not sure if that's entirely awareness of being in a game or just poking at the notion since Yuri never mentions anything like that again and none of the other characters find it odd he mentioned it.

It was an okay game in the end but not nearly as in depth as most cuhrayzee games of its kind.

Maybe the characters in the game become self aware not only to the fact that they are characters in a game but also to the fact that they have scripted lines and can't get out of the path that was programmed to them?
Maybe mix that with some MGS Psycho Mantis shit like reading into your saved games/analyzing your system if it's a PC game.
Maybe make them talk about the way you played the game. Like point out you ran around aimlessly a lot, or you died a lot, etc. I dunno.
