...

that feel when i was born to late to experience any LAN party

modern games don't have LAN anymore

No.
No.

...

My uni still does it once a semester, but it was a bit of a misnomer since some guys would set up consoles on the huge classroom projectors. We'd order like twenty pizzas and tons of snacks and sit around and play Doom and Mario Kart all day.

I miss uni sometimes.

...

The upside is, this makes the few gaming centers still in business more special

I think they happen less because playing over the internet is just more convenient. It's a fair amount of equipment to move around to play games, but someday I'd like to do a mini ITX build to serve that purpose.

I'm sure there'll be LAN parties in retirement homes in the future.

I find moving around and hooking up a desktop to be less of a hassle than dealing with most official online servers to be honest. not to mention the communities.

...

Today's games are highly neutered for LAN play. The whole piracy boogeyman has developers trying to force everyone to multiplay through their servers.

LAN centers were fun. Fists would always fly, and it wouldn't be uncommon for knives to be pulled out; if you talked shit you get hit; LAN centers were serious fucking business cause they nickled and dimed you on your playtime.

I was there when some kid got stabbed to death after talking so much trash in CS.

Granted, this was in the late 90s-early 00s so I have no idea what the scene is like now.

You can at least do it on PC with new games right? It just seems really fucking backwards when even PS1 had "system link", but TVs were really fucking heavy and more expensive back then. Nowadays kids could even carry an LCD right to their friends house with them since they're so cheap and light.

I've never been to one either. Strange hoe the internet I was so excited for has ruined damn near everything about games.

pretty much every pc game made in the last 6 or more years requires some kind of fucking around with if not flatout piracy to play with a LAN. I legitimately can't think of any that have official support.

Still very serious business, apparently.

LAN isn't in a lot of newer commercial titles on PC. open source games do tend to have LAN if they have any sort of multiplayer though.

sounds kind of miserable and dangerous but ok

piracy is just an excuse, they don't want to compete with old titles that are mostly being sold used or for cheap, they want you to pay full price for a new title.

how can a person be this fucking salty

Sadly, very rarely

Oh okay, figures. I should just give up on caring about that stuff I guess. This industry sucks.

I'm guessing that's still better than the 3DS game. I'm tempted to try the new one, but I don't really like the show.

My request is specific but does anyone know any DRM free, local co-op, mulitplayer games that aren't Shmups, top-down shooters, fighting games, or side scrolling battle arena games (ex. duck game, tower fall, samurai gunn, etc.)?

25 year old
I and friends of similar age still do lan parties and visit openly advertised ones.
Mainly old shooters and rts are played (UT2004, counter strike and the like), nobody bothers with new titles there really and the ones that are played are openly distributed fully cracked and of course lan ready, usually found on a harddrive accessible by anyone on the lan, so anyone can jump right in.
It is somewhat of an ingroup thing, since it happens in someones basement or semipublic space, and you really only know of it mostly if you know someone that goes there.

and that was the first and last time

A TRUE CRIME TO ALL AGES

any old shooter any old rts.
To name a few commonly seen: UT2004(with mods always fun), counter strike and the like, earth (lost souls or any expansion really), star craft, age of empires,….
Really just a question of personal preference, anything goes, as long as someone can provide the files and at worst people will switch to something else.
People tend to be very open to most any game just for the sake of trying it and fun, unless you are an autist like .

Oh boy lan centers. Some mixed memories there.

some guys playing diablo 2 LoD
generals with friends
playing warcraft with friends
friend works at a computer club for a while, but late shifts
me, 15 year old , playing CS with friends and randoms

That's just the tip of the iceberg. I was the sort of guy who avoided nighttime clubs. I could only imagine what shit happened there every night.
It was cool with friends, but definitely a place full of weirdos, retards and lowlife.

No ASSFAGGOTS killed them.

do you mean on the same machine local or LAN?
i'm guessing you want players vs enemies in a campaign sort of thing. you can do that in Doom and Quake over LAN and the internet, although i haven't personally done it with Quake, just heard that you could.

lightgun games obviously have local co-op

Yes.
All the time
In Texas.
Best state by the way.

Rarely, partially because of

LAN parties nowadays are mostly limited to few big events like Dreamhack and Assembly.

That's part of the charm. Just make sure to take some low-end PC instead of your usual one. You'll run the games that are player in a LAN party and don't risk someone stealing your shit.

I was thinking about local co-op mainly. What is the best emulator for lightgun arcade games?

Nope. Improved Internet connections killed LAN parties. Modern devs don't even make LAN an option anymore, not even the faggots trying to prey on nostalgiafags. Console games don't do it either, despite having ethernet ports and whatnot.

Hell, PS4 and Xbone don't even do split screen anymore. If you want to play any recent FPS with some bros at your house, you need to bring a TV, console, and copy for each and every person. I think you can still do it with WiiU, but for like one game, Mario Kart 8. On that note, the WiiU is pretty much the only console that uses one of the few advantages consoles have over gaming PCs: local multiplayer. You've still got games that get people to huddle up around a TV and bump shoulders and laugh and scream and have a good time.

We socialize less and less across all social tiers. All we have are nameless, faceless anons lagging it up and getting disconnected from games. Voices over VOIP instead of shoulder to shoulder, screaming about how cheap your tactics are and laughing when funny shit happens.

Maybe I'm wrong on all accounts and I'm just an overly bitter fuck. I hope to God I am.

I went to a lan party with people I've known in primary school and hadn't spoken to pretty much since going to high school.
They all stayed the fucking same.
The game preference stayed the fucking same.
Prop Hunt, Collerduooty, MOBAs and some other shit I'd missed because I left the screeching house after only a couple of hours. It was horrible.

People, we need a list of good LAN games here! This must happen!

FANTASTIC!

Thanks lad.

I used to go to LAN parties at PC bangs for CS, C&C, and Quake, but those died out 5-6 years ago. Now all I have for local vidya is occasional fightan or smash.

Dude, don't make a pic of that shit. Put it in a txt like with your copypastas.

...

Yes. Biggest known one is Quake-con. I went once a few years back and had fun.

Yes they do.
I'm currently in one with my fiance and some friends.

However with how online works nowadays this is something stupid to do, but hey, it's fun from time to time.

It's fucking asians man.

did he died

Also: don't think I didn't notice you saved that file from cuckchan Holla Forums.

None of the home consoles do. The modern equivalent of LAN has shifted to the ad hoc capabilities of handheld consoles. Both the Vita and 3DS have a ton of games that are designed for local group play from the ground up.

Me and my buddies in CompSci had a LAN party back in my senior year of high school. It was a fucking blast, we got the teacher to let us use the lab over the holidays.

People always talked about being excited to graduate, but it honestly was kinda bittersweet for me. I knew things probably wouldn't look up, and we had a lot of fun that year. 2012 was alright.

Right there with you man. Me and all my friends had lan parties and shit like that, and I knew in the back of my head we were all going different places when we graduated.

Hell, only one of us stayed in that backwater-ass area (Key Peninsula area in Washington state, if you're wondering) and it wasn't me.

I got a couple of friends to LAN some UT in the library on campus.

There's a card shop nearby that's also an internet cafe with games on a bunch of PC's, but as far as I know, nobody ever LAN's anything, they all just show up and play CS or LoL.

...

This. An angry black man is hilarious and could be dangerous. An angry Asian is just dangerous. It's also why most Asian men have fantasies about marrying non-Asian women, because them bitches go nuclear when they get mad.

…That explains a lot of anime.

my old club ended up kicking a guy out because he was watching gorilla porn

In Europe? South America? I wish I knew where the LAN groups were here in US.

Indiana.
