When SHTF your *legal* guns will be confiscated immediately as police has the right to (in many European countries) search your house when you are a registered gun owner. In almost all of Europe firearms can be obtained legally albeit it more of a hassle with licensing and various restrictions etc. The difference is however that they cannot be used for self-defense. I could own a gun, but if someone broke into my house and tried to kill me and I shot them I would be sent to prison for a very very long time. Heaven forbid someone were to use a firearm to protect their life when traveling to and from a range, they would spend the rest of their life in a cell.
