I have heard people in college for related fields muse that homosexuality is a self correcting mechanism for overpopulation. Basing the idea on similar behaviors that can be observed in animals. I think the root of homosexual behavior is a gene that is somehow advantageous. How? Well we're dimorphic, we're relegated to roles based on our sex. Men have always been warrior caste, which throughout history requires separation from females for long periods of time in extremely stressful conditions. How they coped with things like PTSD was probably very different than today.
