It's actually sort of a complicated relationship.

First of all, where i live sony consoles have always been the main consoles everyone owned.

Furthermore, Final Fantasy mainly, but also all sorts of JRPGs were -the- games one would play on those consoles, you either played sports games, or you played fighting games (not quite FGC, we never had an arcade scene, fighting games were just the common thing to play), or you played JRPGs, you played as many JRPGs as you could.

It was never a niche genre back then, it was the main draw of owning a console.

There was no such thing as "weaboo" because where i live many animes were on national television, it was common way before it was even a thing in the US, understanding anime was pretty much in our genes, obviously always keeping things pleb tier for the average joe, but i guess the situation was already better than in the US where they still called that shit "japanimation" and it seemed alien and niche to them, here even plebs knew certain series.

However this all changed over the years with the generational exchange and now, while certain people still cling to their JRPG addicted ways, the genre as a whole is more niche and we're becoming more in line with americans, the new generation grew up on shittier anime, and shitty western shows so there's now such a thing as "being a weeb" and all the other stereotypes and normalfagfication of the average joe.

Most are either shit for total dweebs (99% of all moeshit games) or just shit (Final Fantasy XXXXIVISIIVI).
There are good games though, but they are rarely (never) found in the moeshit category.
