The buckler's function is very different than the shield though. It's performance depends on the user being familiar with its philosophy of use. A round shield like the vikings used on the other hand IMO has more application in a riot setting rather than the buckler which was created towards the end of the massed infantry tactics.

With what little experience I have with propmaking, I can tell you right now that soaking just about anything, cardboard included, with high quality wood glue will make it far more durable than you might imagine.

If you're bringing a shield for defense, and have zero previous experience with shields, bring a round shield as they aren't hard to make and easier to replace. Look online for bamboo or rattan (same thing) sticks. They're cheap and hurt like a son of a bitch. They also don't kill people like you're implying. Also easier to smuggle as a flag pole.

All in all, though, actual armor will fuck you up but you can create quilted or padded armor that, while it'll get hot, isn't as heavy or hot as other armor available, or if you want minimal effort at least protect important parts with a kidney belt and a form of helmet, preferably one that guards the more sensitive back of your head. Learn to use your weapons since a slight adjustment to how you swing can ramp the force up without much extra effort. And always remember that combat is about keeping yourself alive more than taking down your opponent. They'll come to you in time, just wait their impatience out. At best they fuck off after squealing like apes and instigating, making you look patient as a saint and at worse you have a wall of pain they have to march on. Keep stragglers in line or leave them to the dogs. I can't argue with those trips. Just some clarifications.
I've used round shields user. I know that. The grip is much lighter than the more popular shield with two straps used in later periods. That said, the later design is more intuitive for newfags. You will naturally cover with your arm if you see somebody trying to hit you, but the "door" mechanics and the reverse cuts you can do with a round shield requires some learning. A round shield is wonderful if you know the mechanics, but that takes training.

I'll try to explain better. I've practiced HEMA user, and the footwork is not that great, is good in form, but too much movement takes stability. Also, they attack without closing the line of the enemy and telegraph with their feet before using their arms when fighting in real tempos would require the opposite. Also, it seems like they are wasting energy trying to attack the HP of the shield and i think i saw an attack below the waist that i though was going to be countered with a well placed head strike. They both have good overall structure, but the technique is what worries me. I missed cuts from the left.

I've used sticks against poles on sparrings. A stick carried with both hands can bring protection against an upper blow, and passing the tip of the pole the range of movement is reduced so it favors close combat but now writing it seems like a very convoluted way to put yourself in danger and i'm ignoring the moments when the pole got to strike me before reaching my opponent. Thinking it that way a little buckler starts to make sense.

I wouldn't argue with you there, I'm just an user with some experience rioting against police a long time ago and I found the center grip much more useful than the double strap in both pushing people off me, pushing people back while rushing them (since I get to extend the broad side of my shield into their face and get some space instead of having the shield strapped to my arm where I can only body slam people). Personally, I found the double straps to be better once I'm not alone. I have never shield punched someone since I found it to be too technical and it leaves me exposed in a massed scenario.

On individual fights before the riots got more organized, I was using a baton sized stick reinforced with duct tape and a shield to keep myself and people around me safe. Once the riots got pretty organized, I changed it for a slightly larger shield which was double strapped and a 4 feet long pole. Having a mass of people on my side now meant I needed something that had the range for me to jab past people to dislodge or discourage someone else who might be grappling or in a melee with him.

I would think that for the untrained melee combatants trying to waltz in with a weapon and a protective shield, your best bet would be a buckler strapped to one arm so both hands can grip the weapon. The biggest issue with using polearm type weapons is getting disarmed, since someone can just grab the end and yank, and having both hands on it will help to prevent that.

On the flip side, if you know you're flanked on each side by friendlies, a jabbing weapon would be best that has some length. Since jabbing is general a one handed practice, swapping the buckler for a real full sized shield would be more beneficial, but without the second hand gripping your "lance" you're going to need some kind of deterrent preventing people from grabbing the end of it. Ideally you'd want something very, very tiny, so your weapon simply looks like a long stick, and so that police can't do anything to you insofar as AWDW is concerned. Nails or razors strapped to the shaft would be too large and obvious, you want something almost unnoticeable so that when they do go to grab the shaft they get an extraordinarily nasty surprise, like a shock but worse. I'm not sure what would fit that bill, however.

You might be able to get away with gluing a shit ton of toothpicks sideways around the shaft, all up and down, since those are relatively benign, but you try to grab something like that with your bare hands and it's going to sting.

I've only tested round shields with HEMAfags using the "door" theory similar to the video of the lecture i posted originally from Warzecha. I'd have to know about the other treatise and maybe stand corrected. I've mostly studied 15th italian and 13th german fencing, so my experience with the broad "viking fencing" is mostly from workshops and common events with other groups. All i know from round shields (at least the one posted by skallagrim) comes from that experience. Later treatises might change that, but i don't know that much after 15th century. I'm still trying to cover that time between armored fencing and the meme of bartitsu.

Also, about sticks, if you have backup, a polearm is a good idea, since you can keep your distance. If i was alone, my personal choice would be a stick and buckler, since i want to avoid attack on the close ground and run the hell out of there.

If you have a Chinese stick and plywood supplier who does bulk, now's the time to get in touch. Logistics was the biggest factor back then, it will still be the biggest factor now. Another thing I forgot to mention is that in the initial days when it was mostly me fighting alone or alongside other people by coincidence, I duct taped the damn stick to my hand. Even when only one hand free where I was holding my shield was free, it still worked because the hired goons couldn't disarm me even when they tried to grab my stick. It'll just end up with me smacking them over the head with the boss. I also duct taped my arms so that my sleeve wasn't loose and they can't grab me via hanging fabric. Duct tape solves everything really. Other than that, most of the stuff I have probably applicable to you since we were more focused on defeating water cannons, tear gas and hired government goons posing as protesters or general agitators.

There was a few highlights that you'll probably find funny though.

We did hang an agitator goon off a lamp post after someone caught him producing a molotov in the early days when the cops were itching for a clash. Pity it wasn't by the neck. He was rescue later by the fire brigade once the protesters left the area and the cops secured it

This is generally a bad idea in any combat situation, especially if the person has experience enough in martial arts/body mechanics it may very well work against you. As someone who knows how to disarm people (knifes, bats/sticks, guns, swords) all it takes is using the weapon itself as leverage against the person's grip until either they let go OR until something snaps in the body. Remember the human body has limited orbit of rotation in the wrist, elbows and shoulders, and applying counter-pressure to these thresholds can easily tear or break it. So by using that person's weapon as leverage (especially bats or 6 foot sticks) I can apply counter-pressure to any of these joints, especially the wrist, to the point of disarm, or in this case to the point of restrain or dislocation.

Yeah I know antifa are pussies who don't know how to fight for their lives and may not know this stuff, but do this at your own risk. In fact don't do this because worst case scenario you're on the ground in a scramble, someone steps on the weapon, you risk injuring yourself more due to limited body mechanics (because you got a obscured, long object sealed into your hand).

I should make it clear that it's not done like one would in some old gangster movie with cloth and a knife. I duct taped my hand in a way that maintained a natural shape of a grip for me so that I don't go noodle fingers after too many swings that day and I was still able to release the stick and replace it when I needed a new stick (You just need more effort extending your fingers really). Probably a good way to get ids on antifa are via sharking method. Have a photographer hidden somewhere with highdef zoom camera. 2nd guy gets close to antifa, unmasks then runs away in direction of photographer. Photographer takes pictures while antifa is looking in that direction.
