VR turns out to just be mouselook for your head

What the fuck is the point of VR

Making money.

Of course it's not the same fucking thing, not even close, holy shit user nobody is this stupid.

Porn.

...

The point is immersion and presence
The point is having mouselook for your head and the ability to look directly at your screen at the same time
But of course you already knew that and just wanted to make a bait thread, because nobody is retarded enough to have expected a fucking nervous system interface, not even you, OP

It really isn't that immersive, especially with all the "software toys" they're marketing as games.

You poke your head forward and back and tilt your head from side to side but you can do that with TrackIR.

What's different? Having two screens? Not a notable difference. The immersion is hype and once you put on the headset it's like "this is it?"

It really is mouselook for your head. You can't even walk and even if you were to do roomscale, nobody has a room big enough or the space to do it. Take two steps and you're at your wall anyway so what's the point.

For actual character movement a lot of the games make you just point to a place to relocate the camera. That's their excuse for movement. Teleporting.

Sorry if you paid money for VR headsets.

How much did you pay?

Porn, you should try it seriously

How would I try porn casually?

Why.

Do .

You.

Keep.

Wasting.

Lines.

Like.

This ?

Headache free 3D imaging.

Holy shit, these sourgrapes, just wait for the price drop like evreyone is and stop spouting bullshit and misinfo.

You wasted more lines than me.

stop being autistic about it. stop downvoting as well, you niggerfaggot

I

want

reddit

to

leave

I bet you go there daily.

>>>/reddit/

I bet you can't stop yourself from replying to me

haha

I bet you just switched the avatar you're avatarfagging with.

trackir + the screen follows your line of sight instead of just being a little rectangle.

Moral of the story: don't buy into the hype, give it a go before you drop money on it.

How much did you pay for your headset?

Is this an epic new meme? It's just easier to divide long blocks of text into short phrases. What the fuck.

And that's supposed to be a problem? That's what I wanted ever since I first played a first-person game. Adding that to the controls games already have is the goal. It's the addition of stupid gimmicky, unreliable motion control that I was afraid of, so if that's not part, great.

it's reddit formatting

Bullshit. Most people are legitimately in awe by how strong the stereoscopic effect on these things are. So much so that the biggest obstacle game devs are facing is that is that the immersion is causing motion sickness with player-character movement, that's the reason for the teleportation bullshit.

I'm chalking that up to game devs having no idea how best to handle the technology. Over the years I imagine we might have devs come up with better ways of working it into the gameplay. It's like when 3d graphics was becoming a thing, it took awhile for devs of traditionally 2D games to realise that 2.5D was the way to go.

Is actually bothering to use proper paragraphs in posts instead of giant blocks of text considered a reddit thing now?

No they're not.

Fucking hell, you faggots are fucking insufferable. How long until we have to start writting in russian or some shit because reddit uses english.

How the fuck do you even know what "reddit formatting" is unless you spend enough time there to notice a pattern? Seriously, you guys are the biggest fucking faggots I've seen in a good while.

It is.

However, breaking a new line for every fucking sentence looks retarded.

And it is also frequently done by redditors as a force of habit (source: Holla Forums).

It also makes your posts takes up more space than it should.

Don't break every new sentence.

No.

Just when you do it with each sentence.

So why the fuck do you think there's any interest in these things at all then? If it was just hype then no one would be retaining interest in them after using them.

Thing is, while I do think that user is a faggot, he was using multiple sentences per line.

I still say that fully 3D gameplay is the only reason for 3D graphics, if the gameplay is 2D, giving it 3D visuals is making it look a little worse for no good reason.

It's not like people making way too many line breaks is even new, I've seen that sort of poor formatting since before reddit was even a thing.

Maybe I should have rephrased it as not constantly breaking a new line, textblocks longer than one line aren't that illegible.

So your reasons for sperging the fuck out like fucking autistic retard are:

"It may be something reddit does, I've heard it on a thread once from someone who visits reddit apparently, but is not a redditor and is worth of listening to!"

And "It wastes precious thread space! It's so hard to scroll down!!"

The only people who complain are people who browse 8ch on mobile

OP is totally correct, btw. As a person who has been playing flight sims for a decade VR has already been done before with trackIR and is just glorified mouse look.

Most people haven't. What's the percent of people on steam who own VR? Like less then 1%?

Haven't the sales been shite? There's no software to carry it on any platform.

look at what that one VR rollercoaster game has been doing for 5+ years.

The VR being released today is no where near that.

That's wrong you retard.

That, along with the price-tags are better reasons for it not selling well, as opposed to just claiming the technology isn't impressive.

Or perhaps no good software is being made because the technology isn't impressive. So many sacrifices have to be made to gameplay quality to facilitate "immersion" that you're stuck with block stacking toys and walking simulators.

Thing is that starts to depend very heavily on monitor sizes.

But that's conceding that the technology is impressive isn't it?

As I've said, the whole reason they've had to restrict themselves is that unnatural player movement causes motion sickness due to the very immersion of the headsets.

Prove it

No, how is it doing that? The technology leads to simple little games because it's just mouselook for your head and two clunky controllers that do the job that controllers do but worse.

Extract shekels from the goyim.

I did and now I have a vive.
Borrow some thing from a friend or such and see for yourself.

Vive controllers are reliable and really fucking accurate

I am surprised they are anons on this board who really bought into the hype.

Its a small, hobby kit. Nothing more, nothing less; you are more naive then anyone else on this board if you think otherwise.

That's not how it works, moron. You're getting motion sickness from the bad display not the experience.

What about the depth you get from two screens?
VR will be great after it becomes cheaper, like all new technology. After it becomes not six-to-eight hundred dollorydoos per headset.

It causes motion sickness due to the immersion. Its a form of car sickness. basically your eyes and balance are sending different signals. Its why i needs high framerates so your head movements can match the movement on screen. Otherwise your eyes and ear balance think your are moving at two different speeds causing disorientation.

It doesn't

come on, at least try

What's happened to this place?

I should clarify that its only your eyes that are immersed, and believe what you are seeing is real. The brain is easily tricked into believing shit thats not real.

Because VR gives you a greater degree of information. Not only does VR grant you greater view of the game environment without having to use your peripheral vision, but you also get depth perception.

What's happened to this place?

He doesnt remember all the VR hype and shilling
People warned these fucking retards to keep their expectations low, especially with a new piece of technology, now we have buttrusled children complaining about it 24/7 and accusing any mild interest on the future of it as shilling

Wait for the pricepricedrop, get a fucking job, or better yet, both

nobody hates reddit as much as someone who's spent time there.

Yup I'm on the same boat, but didn't get a vive, I got the rift. I've got no use or space for room scale shenanigans.

>>>/reddit/

How does reptilian dick taste?

VR is good for simulators is being pushed hard by VRfags because they are desperate to get people to buy in to it.

Anyone who has ever spent time in any sort of simulator knows that VR simply isn’t as good as a monitor with head tracking, and no amount of hopeful thinking will make VR’s pixel density worth using.

kinda scaly.

Again: that's not what is happening

I'm not really familiar with VR games or their controllers. What is stopping devs from allowing the player to move forward? Why not just hold down a button for movement?

babbies get nauseous

Tell me then what is actually happening?

I like my Track IR more. The existing VR headsets are way too bulky with shit resolution and are not comfy at all with glasses. VR headsets also prevent mixing in physical hardware like TM's hardware MFDs and HOTAS with switch board. Everyone that plays sims seriously has at least one such product. So the one community that was supposed to adopt these headsets probably won't.

There should be a law.

But user. Don't you know that just scrolling charges you or some other made up shit that makes breaks between sentences added charge?

Long story short for the rest of anons. VR is a gimmick that is no fucking different than the virtual boy but at least Nintendo wasn't conceded about it.
These anons deserve to be gased.

Sure smells like buy's remorse in this thread.

Tell me, do you honestly expect this to become a standard? Did you think the Wii was the future? Did you think the kinect was the future? There is no way a sustainable market of people are going to clear out a seven foot space and shill out seven hundred dollars for a novelty.

It may be cool, but it won't last.

VR is a crock of shit. It's an $800 Wii you have to redecorate your room for. Mouselook for your head is the only thing it has to offer over the 2006 Nintendo console and even then it's disorienting, sickness inducing, and otherwise adds nothing special you didn't have before. It's the kind of thing that only adds to racing/driving sims. Coincidentally the simulator enthusiast crowd is also the only real market but even they make up

What do you honestly expect VR to be, in this day and age?
Granted, we have the technology for more, but not on a consumer level.

Mouselook is just a gimmick. It's just easy mode for people who don't want to turn with the arrow keys.

If we don't have the technology for proper VR on a consumer level then why are we even trying? This fake bullshit is just insulting, and at worse will set standards for what real VR will be.

I just wanted the full package without compromise. You can setup the vive to be seated only too, so nothing to complain about.
Hoverjunkers is freaking sweet and the next day my legs were pumping battery acid from all the rapid squatting. I try to show it hands on to as many people as possible and the guys who called it a 'gimmic' and a waste of money which I saved up for almost a year had a 180 degree turn of opinion on it.
Exclusive titles (besides timed exclusivity) really grind my gears. It's like limiting your game to only AMD or Intel CPU or a brand of monitor.

the result of the exclusivity shenanigans has been a boon if you ask me. Because it's meant that people just crack the DRM and pirate the shit out of the games instead.

Assuming you're not trolling, mouselook is more precise than arrow keys. Hell, it's the most precise way of controling crosshair ever invented to this day.

Turning your head in "VR" headsets is choppy and unprecise

It'd be cool for FPS' if they made the gun you had where it shoots, and the headset is for your eyes.

what

You can do that with the vive - just build and program a custom controller

Yeah. That's exactly why everyone hates hearing "lol fuck off reddit" in every thread.

Just because you had to be a faggot to learn how to avoid faggotry doesn't mean everyone else did.

...

It's really not hard to understand what he's saying.

Have you been following the development discussions of this or tried any of the consumer versions? There was a problem of motion sickness happening due to input lag but that got fixed.

You don't get sickness at all when your immediate view remains consistent with your head with the consumer versions. The problem comes when you try to move the character you are playing while you remain perfectly still. Seeing the world move around you without any kind of context of your own movement causes sickness due to what says.

Every. Fucking. Time.

Try leaving your house from time to time, it's not hard to find opportunities to give these things a shot and actually get an informed opinion as long as you're in a developed country.

And no, I didn't think Wii or Kinect was "The Future", nor do I think VR is. I do think it could make for a nice niche product with an decent selection of VR supported games which make effective use of the technology though. Not everything has to be the extreme of either being "dead" or "the future!".

That's what happened in the 90s, VR was tried and they realized it was not plausible.

Now the idea is to have the screens+track IR, call it VR, then sell it to walking standing simulator audiences and the like who eat this up. The rest is marketing. The consumer hardware for the screen+tracking is now not that expensive. Although it still is, hence the price tag.

It's just like 3D a few years ago. You're paying a premium for technology that isn't fully developed and so isn't as good as it is being marketed as. They'll probably both be pretty good in a couple decades though.

But if you're being told "fuck off reddit", it's the same as being called a faggot according to you. So, fuck off reddit.

Oooh, cool buzzwords. Too bad they don't fucking mean anything.

Have you ever played a video game

VR is shit and for casuals. Good luck getting eye cancer with your eyes being open all the time staring into the abyss.

Virtual waifus. Any other vidya genre suffers from being unable to see the keyboard in peripheral vision.

No it isn't, it's pointless and wastes space.

Reddit or not, you people need to learn how to fucking type.

...

Can't wait until this takes off.
I can't wait.

VR will only ever be good for games where you play in a driver's seat or cockpit. Or story rich games like gone home.

No, that's just the way it seems right now.
The problem is that the ones who have the money for VR are the ones who don't give a shit about games that would be amazing with VR, like racing or flight.
And the ones who'd eat that shit up are probably NEETs who can't afford that shit.
They can't afford to "vote with their wallets" and the ones who throw money around are the ones who will be catered to.
Get ready for nothing but artsy fartsy games for VR.

Simulators are more fun with physical hardware buttons, switches, dials, etc.. VR headsets prevent using them. So the market for these things is the subset of hardcore sim gamers that play casually. VR was a mistake.

It can be done. There's a new thing going around where you play a racing sim with the wheel in front of a greenscreen and the computer superimposes you and the wheel into the car you drive. It's pretty cool but still leagues away from becoming a standard.

If you don't see the advantage of having an independent viewpoint from your aim-point or movement vector you're fucking retarded

I would kill for a new Steel Battalion (like the original and Line of Contact that used the massive controller), especially if it worked with VR.

…really?

you're a fucking idiot.

I want people with weak genes who get motion sickness to hang themselves - they're the cancer killing VR.
That teleportation bullshit needs to fucking go away. I've played games like Alien Isolation and Subnautica in VR, and there's zero motion sickness. If anything, that style of VR is by far the best because it lets you actually immerse yourself in another character. When you're teleporting around, where the fuck is the immersion? That shit is just retarded.
When I look down, I want to see my virtual body, not a fucking circular PS1 shadow. When I look into a mirror, I want to see my entire virtual character, not a disembodied cartoon head and floating mickey mouse gloves.

God fucking damnit, I love VR and the immersion level blows my mind on a daily basis, but idiots and genetic degenerates are taking it in the wrong direction before it even has a chance to stabilize. It's like they're not even trying.

VR is fucking amazing for games where you're a person running around, the problem is that people think it's not good because they're retards, and so nobody bothers trying to make proper games. Instead we get a lot of gimmick shit like the Wii all over again.
Fuck dedicated VR games. I'm just waiting for that vireio wrapper to be finished so I can play all of the already existing games in proper VR.

Games where your character is seated in a cockpit are also fine, but they're not really taking full advantage of the hardware. That's a lazy way out, with a few legitimately decent exceptions.
Some games have some fun with the concept at least, like Project Cars, where you can change your position and world scale with a few keystrokes. Basically, you can feel like you're a spider perched on the hood of a giant car, or a giant crammed into a tiny toy car in a toy world, or anything in between. It's really interesting when you can just play with the dimensions and perspective of the virtual world like that.

isn't there already some dating sim where every single girl is a friendzoning dyke?

Just looked it up. It's called, and I wish I were making this shit up, "Chasing the Manic Pixie Girl - a game about Love, Consent and Respect".
The world you fear is already around you.

This goddamn thing is what made me hate VR. Goddamn fucking gimmick that's wont sell 1k copies because who even owns this stupid shit? Meanwhile they didn't say one bloody thing about SS4 holy shit

I own an HMD, and I agree with you. Developing video games exclusively for a particular peripheral device is absolutely fucking retarded, and only alienates potential customers. VR is a very flexible thing, and it can easily be adapted to virtually any video game whatsoever - so devs should just fucking keep making games and slap on a VR patch after it's finished.
For fuck's sake, it's not that hard. The VR in alien isolation is god-tier, and it was a scrapped half-finished afterthought on the devs part.

This is true, I would have been happy if they announced VR patches for all the existing SS games already out. But making a bullshit need-to-pay-400-for-the-privilege-of-playing side entry and doing so at the fucking expense of the actual game every fan has been waiting for? Fucking bullshit

VR games can be cool, or at least using the goggles on first-person games. I really like shooters, but Thief and (heavily modded) skyrim have been the comfiest ones so far.
I used google cardboard, trinus, and a $30 viewer so if this goes nowhere I don't lose much

as someone who actually owns a VR headset I got for free, I can say that it's nothing more than meh.

Headtracking is cool and the games do really feel surprisingly "in your face". Playing with a mouse + keyboard is pretty fun, too if the game doesn't allow for 360 degree play.

Most of what is offered on Steam is really nothing more than minigames and I can guarantee that it will stay that way for a while (or until they add a joystick to the controller). I mean, it's immersive. Very immersive, in fact. Some games REALLY make you feel as though you're part of the action. Though the feeling wears off after a while once the nausea begins to set in and you're forced to go back to using a screen.

Do I believe this could be the next big step in video games? Yes, I do. But it's so primitive right now that investing in any headset will be a waste of money on your end.

Is it fun to use? Yes. Is it worth $600? No, absolutely not.

This user speaks truth.

...

Oh boy, I love the idea of spending hundreds of my hard earned cash on peripherals for an already expensive piece of shit, just to make it less shit.

baby steps, man. we've got to get the basics down before we get all the cool shit.
